I just found this while looking for a new desktop wallpaper and thought I'd share:
Late afternoon sun silhouettes dead acacia trees against a backdrop of sand dunes. In Namibia's Namib-Naukluft Park on southern Africa's west coast, the dunes rise as high as a thousand feet (300 meters) from the desert floor.
made it my desktop.
thanks.
was disorienting at first.
This is a real shot, not the background photoshopped in?
weird.
Another one from the same area. I was thinking one of the massive dunes just north of the salt flats...
oh i see it now.
wicked.
Very cool, Great Find.
They look like photoshopped. Or are they original?
The second picture looked to me like the mountains east of salt flats actually. The steep rise gave me more of a "solid" ground than loose sand.
They definately do look photoshopped or something. But, I think they are actually real, and just very very trippy. National Geographic pictures actually.

I like this one, my new BG now.
The original picture is not photoshopped. It's from National Geographic.
Here's another picture of a location that makes me think of Armageddon. It's an area of Death Valley called 'The Devil's Cornfield'. These are clumps of grass that originally grow on the surface, but as years of wind whips the sand away from them and the surrounding land, they end up standing above the ground, with the only dirt remaining being the dirt held in place by their roots. They look really neat when they die, but I couldn't find a pic of dead arrowweed grass.

Totally looks like scrub lands fading into red desert.
When they die, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they just become tumbleweed?

METAL FENCE! :o

Yup. Now I know what the scrub lands are missing.
TUMBLEWEEDS.
lol...that's a representation of a tumbleweed, not a representation of Zalanthas. ;)
Aha. I found the picture I was looking for - of dead arrowweed grass in the Devil's Cornfield

Ok, I can keep posting links and eating up bandwidth all day. Suffice it to say, this photoshoot from Death Valley has some really cool images, and you can check them out at http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/2007-11/death-valley/melford-photography.html (http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/2007-11/death-valley/melford-photography.html)
Really nifty pix, thank you for posting those!

Nope, tumbleweeds are a specific type of plant, some of which when they dry up in autumn break off the root and blow away on the wind. Most plants don't do that.
