Title: A new crafting skill
Post by: DarkSunsofhell on August 13, 2006, 05:55:07 AM
what do you think of think?

A carving skill? like you get a large chunk of obsidian and carve it into 50 coins? or even 25? just  a skill i thought would be cool, like you can carve a elf onto a sword so it looks like this an obsian elf carved face breastplate or somthing? carve into swords and make them elf swords or dwarf swords or even carve obsidian coins into elf coins so you buy from elfs only with elf coins or somthing? just a skill i thought would be cool heh...

what do you think though?

Carving your own coins would probably be highly illegal, and very very difficult. Can you make a quarter? How about out of glass? :)

Edit: that doesn't mean the skill can't exist, of course. I just don't like the idea of creating coins.

I think it might be cool if it were codedly possible to make it very, -very- difficult to make one, and even if you DID manage it, you needed an insane amount of skill to actually pass it off to a merchant. (Tagged a criminal for attempting to pass a bad coin! But then you could plant the illegal ones on people you didn't like).

Watch out for subguild counterfeiter!

We already have stonecarving and woodcarving.  I think we're good.

Why would you carve a huge hunk of obsidian into a few dozen coins when you can carve it into a statue of the dragon and sell it for a few thousand coins (as an example)?

The same reason why people today try to counterfeit money instead of making beautiful art masterpieces and selling them off. Less work for them, it's something that they're better at, etc, etc.

Counterfeiting isn't against the law.  Or, at least, it isn't listed as being against the law.  To me that implies that counterfeiting isn't a problem.

Possibilities:

volunteering to do the work of slaves.  Carving an obsidian coin would presumably be about as difficult and time consuming as carving an izdari piece, and nobody wants to make izdari pieces that sell for only 1 'sid each.  You carve a piece of obsidian into several obsidian disks, then you individually carve/engrave each of those disks into a coin. [/list]

There is no evidence in game that more than one denomination exists.  It seems absurd that people would carry around thousands of 1 'sid coins, but apparently they do.  Counterfeiting 'sids is like counterfeiting dimes: you can do it but it won't make you rich.

Yeah, but we have nothing but sids.
