DISENGAGE SPARRING MATCHES!!!!!!
http://www.zalanthas.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=18726
And now your tough as nails Sergeant can actually spar with a new recruit without having to worry about decimating the poor lad in 2 seconds. Yet another great addition :)
WHOA!
I... read... that.. thread, but didn't really realize what this meant. Whoa.
Not to mention about ten more changes in the past 60 seconds! :P
OMG....fucking sweet!!
Now if we can get some sort of stam drain for all people in melee, you will be able to go purely on the defensive and conserve energy if you wish.
I like Morg's strategy:
Overwhelm everyone with so many code changes posted about at once that people don't even know where to begin with the discussion/criticism.
Daaaaaaamn. This is nice.
Not to mention the other changes. Whoa.
Morgenes is becoming ridiculous with this rampant implementation of code from discussion threads/imagination/etc. I've seen more updates to the code and changes and new skills and so forth in the last two months than I've seen in the rest of my time playing here combined.
Xygax, Morgenes, and anybody else I may be missing .... thank you.
I count 10 new code additions/changes/updates in Staff Announcements this morning (so far).
I must say Morgenes's good, real good, too good one can even say. Something is unnatural about that amount of updates, no normal man can do it. Gentleman, I'm sorry to tell you, but it is without doubt, that Morgenes is a magicker.
Up with the pitch forks dear people, burn the magicker! burn the magicker!
...Yeh, uh, look. This is one time I'm going to have to let you folks down. I like the magicker, ok? We're gonna have to, uh, just ... you know, let him go about his business.
Maybe he has a garage that needs painting. (http://www.zalanthas.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=199225#199225)

Morrolan
I don't even have words for how awesome this is!!!!!!
This...
This, folks, made me regain my hope that one day the crime code will be revisioned.
THANKS MORGENES!!!!!!!!111shiftoneshiftoneshift...
Too...much...awesomeness...to handle...at..once..
<faint>
I'm having problems sitting comfortably, this has me so excited. And forget using my laptop in the traditional position.
Eww.
All these changes... no character... makes Mental Case go crazy!
Best change in ages. I love it.

Whatever, I'm not from Tuluk. Stick a gem on him and get him back to coding.
Muhahahaha.
Seriously though, big props to all the coders.
*spontaneous orgasm*
Awesomeness.
Also thanks to the ranged combat change it sounds like low strength desert elves may actually be able to use the bows they want to, just with increased stamina penalties. Sweet.

You know, this is almost exactly what I was going to say.
That and I <3 Morgenes again.
Rock on, you sexxy codebeasts.

All these new additons and changes..makes me feel like a first time newb again. :D

I already checked it. IT IS AWESOME!
Just when I thought Morgenes couldn't do any more, he does this.
So amazing, it deserves a rarely seen, Mr. Kitten picture.

IMO, a critically-needed piece of code (no more "death-match-in-the-jail-cell unless both parties *want* it) - and here it is.
Morgenes, you continue to be my coding hero.
-Bluefae, who is still appreciative of a perfectly-timed sdesc change that made the scene.

The skinny, pale noble is here, beating the shit out of the warrior.
The big burly warrior says, while whimpering loudly in "Huh Huh Huh" sound, "I didnae mean it massa!"
Maybe an addition, when nosave's on, you already do not hit at the beginning?
So when a Lord Templar smacks you in the face, you do not try to fist at his face for the first round before you can type 'disengage'.
Ya, sort of like an "auto-disengage". I like that idea.
An auto-disengage would be sweet.
>set passive on|off?
Yeah. For the love of god, let's make it a new command, not another part of nosave. :)

Wanna know what's funny? When I first talked to Tiernan about this he said they're gonna want a way to never attack.
So ya, we hear ya. Let's hear some suggestions. Another command like mercy? passifist? sissy? noncombatant?
change ability
You can change ability to be passive, aggressive, or normal.
(Upon creation of a character, it begins at normal.)

I vote for sissy.

I feel your pain, I saw all the changes and logged in to play. Promptly died. (hence the reason this is an anony post)
Perhaps 'change' should be used for more things.
change mercy on/off
change passive on/off
change nosave on/off
eh? eh?
...or perhaps not.
If you're really free, Morgenes, I'd like to have a 'defensive' command where you always start out defensive even at the beginning and one 'passive', where you do not use any defensive skills and accept the strike with all your heart.
There may be many uses...

Also, I believe fighting against someone passive - not hitting back and not defending himself - should not raise a crimflag. So a player may willingly decide that the attacker will not draw the attention of the militia, like when a master hits at a slave or when a sergeant punches a recruit in the face for stupidity.
And... I know I'm asking for too much but... maybe a command letting you strike only once may be added. Then the scenarios would be much easier to play out.
Thanks in advance for the command(s), Morgenes.
I disagree with the command to allow yourself to be hurt. I think it's silly. I think people would abuse it. If you want to allow yourself to be hurt you would just simply remove your weapons.

This sounds like something "hit" could be used for, as it implies just a single hit.
Where as "kill" would take you off being passive, or defensive, into the ass kicking machine your momma born you to be.
So when a master decides to smash at a slave, does the slave instantly starts defending himself? After you made a very foolish mistake, do you decide dodge the angry fist of the sergeant to put yourself into deeper trouble? After a wicked elf tells you he'll leave you alone after carving his sign on your chest, do you decide to push the dagger away, piss him off and make him kill you instead? For many many scenarios, accepting the damage of a single strike, especially when nosave on makes it nearly safe, can be acceptable.
Edited...
Cenghiz, you bring up two things.
One is a 'strike' command where you hit someone for damage. That sounds cool in certain situations.
Currently, if you have a weapon out, and you hit someone, and the target you're trying to hit does -not- have a weapon out, you will hit them.
(unless, of course, your target is a warrior with the unarmed skill)
The other is the ability to accept every and all hits, without trying to defend yourself. I believe that is silly because after the first hit or two, naturally you will defend yourself. I believe that it takes incredible strength and willpower to -not- dodge a punch. This passifist ideal is something that shouldn't be ingrained into the creatures of Zalanthas. Zalanthas is all about survival of the fittest. It's fight or flight, and NOT stay and be punched in the face.
Should the idea of complete submission be promoted amongst the playerbase, who will -not- be playing the slave characters that exist? I don't think so.
...
is it defence or defense?
Quote from: "mansa"is it defence or defense?
Where do you live? One is british, the other is American. Both are correct.
1. I played many magickers. Believe me or not, even when unguarded by magick, it's possible to dodge armed strikes or strikes of critters with magickers one after another. Especially if they headed for a life of hunting. I'm not sure at all of course, but I believe the ability to dodge is based on base defense and some characters, even bound to accept the punishment of a whip may codedly dodge the whip several times.
2. I'm already speaking about one or two strikes already. Someone will decide not to die after being striked fouth time and start defending himself? Let him type "defensive". It's still possible. Think of the third example I gave. The elf tells you not to move till he carves his sign to your chest and you'll be set free. You will want to codewise accept the damage or not?
Edited...
Cenghiz you need to lay off the cocaine. You are the one who appears to be out of line in this case.
maybe silly translates into something more offensive in his native language?
though, he's always come off as impressively fluent in english.
or maybe he's just had a bad day. usually cenghiz is really cool headed.
But yea, I don't think mansa was being rude, and I think he makes a fair point.
but now, telling someone to lay off the cocaine, that is a bit strong, espescially if said person was already offended by someone calling his idea "silly."

Yeah -- cocaine, that's messed up. Cenghiz you need to lay off the steroids man. Juice is making you act funny.
The reason I did not like cenghiz's idea is that, I would rather have the "defensive" syntax to lower the attack skill and increase the defense skill.
Change passive on|off sounds real cool. I would put my vote on that.
While we are on it, I could kill someone or two for the ability to change the offensive/defensive/normal stances.
Change stance offensive
Change stance defensive
And finally, (though I am not sure how hard it is to code) I would love to lower skill percentages to fool people. Like:
Change hide 70 (makes your hide skill drop to 70% of its current value)
Change hide (leaving the space blank makes it return to its normal value)
While your skills are lowered you don't get to increase those skills.
Change defence 0 (makes you totally vulnerable to any physical attack.)
Rather than a 'passive' wrapper, can look at implementing a more generic framework (see: http://www.zalanthas.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1691 ) that may be applicable for all skills.
Found out 'silly' does not mean such agreessive stuff in English. I always thought it's something too close to 'idiot' and 'mongol'. Yes I was having a bad day I guess. Maybe my masculine period or something. Yes I'll lay off steroids. No, I cannot afford cocaine yet. I edited the stuff except the idea. I'm still defending my idea of 'passive'. 'm tired and coding...
Yey.. I should say I would be voting to the change where you can 'adjust' your skill levels so that you can RP failures too.. I agree with Ghost.
It would be so great if we can "alter sneak 10" just before you managed to introduce yourself to a Guild leader as a fool trying to become an assassin of Guild and then assassinate him when he's sure you're nothing but shit.
Let's say you're an elf entering the city and a guard decided to question you. 'alter sirihish 10'.. Then bored of listening to your blubber, he may just let you go. Or...
The fluffy man sends you a psionic message:
"Find me in private.. I have a contract for you, thief."
>contact hardnose
You made a psionic contact to the fluffy man. (Bah.. I don't remember the echo)
>psi As you wish, Lord Templar.
You send a psionic message to the fluffy man:
"As you wish, Lord Templar."
>nosave on
Nosave is on.
>alter steal 10
Your steal skill is altered to 10 percent.
>hemote pokes a hand into ~merchant pockets.
The shadowy thief pokes a hand into the fat merchant's pockets.
>steal coins merchant
You quietly approach your target.

You managed to steal 18 coins.
>think Damn.. A seven year old child could steal from this fat ox.
You think:
"Damn.. A seven year old child could steal from this fat ox."
>alter steal 1
Your steal skill is altered to 1 percent.
>steal coins merchant
You quietly approach your target.

He discovers you in the last instant!
The fat merchant shouts, in Sirihish:
"Thief! Thief!"
..... A soldier comes and subdues you.. Bah.. I won't write the messages down.....
>psi I'm being taken to a jail cell, Lord Templar.
Of course this is an extreme, but why not?
And no skill should be gained of failures with an altered skill of course. You're concentrating on botching, not learning in the end.
I would adore the ability to fail intentionally.
