Title: Luir's Market
Post by: RogueWarrior on January 11, 2006, 10:11:27 PM
I was just curious, is there a reason that your stamina goes down in the Luir's market yard, but not anywhere else in the outpost?

There's no road there, it's all just hard-packed dirt and dust.

Or maybe it's a realistic representation of how annoying the hawkers are.

:grumbling: Sounds vaguely similar to my mom dragging me to flea markets as a kid... doh.

Sounds like going to the mall!  I hate malls.

I have to agree... I'm not normally a fan... unless I have money, and there's a good food court, book stores, and a gamestop.

If you think there is something wrong with a room in the game you can use the typo command while in game, listing what you perceive to be the issue. However some things may be intentional, and of course will never be addressed, but, that's the right avenue to take.

I second LauraMars' sentiments.  It's like going to the Maul of America.  I always lose TONS of stamina when I go there.

(Yes, I spelled it that way on purpose.)

I always thought the weather was one of the charms of the outpost. And it's not only the marketplace where you can lose stamina.

I always thought it was a way to make the outpost not quiet as friendly to thieves and a sort of detriment to them so they wouldnt stick around there as much as Nak and Tuluk, seeing as how they cant hide and sneak in the market area to steal. An ooc detriment, but a detriment just the same.

It's actually because there are hordes of miniature undead mantis that all grip the bottom of your footie wooties when you're taking a step every time you walk in Luirs, screaming, 'Rrrrraaaiaiaiiiiiiddd?!?!?!  OHHH NOOO!!'

Right.  Think about it: you're in a tiny outpost in the middle of nowhere.  There's not nearly as much shelter anywhere as in the cities, and very little, if anything is paved.

Well, yeah, that's very true, but I just thought that if that was the case, then you would lose stamina along the roads and such inside the Outpost as well. Just always seemed a bit strange to me. And in regards to Darkus' statement, I wasn't really complaining outright, just kinda curious if there was actually a reason for it being this way, what that reason was, or if it was just part of the city's code that didn't get... well... coded right.

I always assumed higher stamina loss to be indicative of harsh terrain or
long distances.  It could be that the marketplace is wider than the grid
would otherwise indicate.

Problem with this hypothesis, it is surrounded on all sides by road that you don't lose stamina when travelling over.

It's simply not as well-paved, I've always figured...or has hard-packed.  I mean, it's not that old compared to the rest of the market places in the world.

I beg to differ.  You're in a BIG outpost in the middle of EVERYWHERE.

(Assuming outpost=not a city and geographically speaking, respectively)  :D

Do you realize that that outpost is probably not much bigger than two to three city blocks on a side?

You could, in fact, fit a large majority of Luir's into Allanak's Bazaar.

Right, so, it's small compared to a city, which is why I said if you assume outpost=not a city, then for an outpost it's rather large.  That's just my take.  And the docs do say it's small, but again, I figured they were comparing it to 'Nak and Tuluk.  Or maybe I was just stretching the truth for the sake of a bad joke.  Either way...

There's a reason it's called Luir's Outpost, and not Luir's City, or something like that.

i liked the joke, james.

But yea, it'd be nice if an immortal could say:

ITS NOT A MISTAKE.

and we could all go: OK.  We'll make up reasons for it, then!

But since we don't have that yet, I'd typo it, and maybe an online immortal will say:

IT'S NOT A MISTAKE.

and then you can comeback and tell us.

Well, I wasn't going to chime in, but in response to Agent_137 and for whatever it's worth, here goes.

I did bug it.  Or idea it.  Or something like that.  Probably a year ago, or so, on discovering that city sneak/hide didn't seem to work in the market.

I got a response immediately from "Someone".  Now I don't want to put words into immortals' mouths, and I don't know for sure which immortal it was, but I'll give a good faith paraphrase.  The response was that it wasn't a mistake and it won't be (or isn't likely to be) changed.  If I remember correctly the Imm also made mention of the fact that it's an outdoor market and so the terrain reflects that.

As for my opinion, I'm fine with it as far as thirst goes.  For sneak/hide?  Meh.  It seems like the approach in a marketplace, regardless of terrain, would be more akin to what I associate with city skills (using crowds and structures for cover rather than the natural environs).

I had thought the same thing but it's no deep-dark-IC-secret that the plaza in Allanak's commoner quarter or that the Labyrinth, even, are both roads comprised of merely "hard-packed" dirt, and yet they don't cost any added stamina to move around in.

But I had better say no more before the IC fascists come to arrest me :D.
