Title: Beep
Post by: Gaare on January 05, 2006, 08:51:56 PM
What would you think about a small addition to beep command like;

>Beep Amos

You beep Amos

> Beep Amos

You beep Amos, but he is link-dead

> Beep Amos

You beep Amos, but he is gone.

Edit: Typo

It would be nice, but instead of an addition to the beep command, maybe we could have a new command like "check" to see if someone is gone or linkdead.  The way I see it, you'll only know that a player is linkdead or gone if you were in the room when they did it.  The gone command does tell the staff that a player is gone, but players who didn't see them go gone won't know when they come into the room.

Either a new command or addition to beep, it helps other players who want to know about linkdead or gone status, while not doing what H&S muds do with a tag by the name, like "Hexxaex is standing here (linkdead)".  That means it won't take away from the RP by telling everyone.

I would like either or both quite a bit. The addition to the ldesc would be very nice.

I would rather have this as part of the beep command, especially if the Beep command was logged.

Assuming that the Check command worked the same way Assess does (no echo to room or even the target), we could see plenty of twinks doing 'check;kill' in order to only select linkdead targets.  With a logged command, it's probably trivial to check if anyone abused the command.
Also, Beep instantly gets the attention of anyone who hears it.  My heart jumps when I hear a beep even when I'm not logged on, after all.

While on the subject of Beep though, I would like its echo to be changed so that only the target got beeped and not the entire room.

If you "tell" or "ask," a gone pc something, then you will get a response with the gone message.

Whisper will do it also.

Oh and another thing I have noticed, when someone drops link, 80% of the time, you don't get the message "has lost link." Until they have connected back into the mud, and you get a "reconnected." message. That would have to be fixed first and I just don't see how it could be. Then again, I'm no coder.

As for beep, most of the time I don't have my headphones on to listen for it. And if I do, then I'm not usually away from the game.

Good ideas, I think they are just hard to put together, and would rather have other things code fixed and upgraded first.

Just so no one worries too much about the logging question:  we log everything.

Just on the subject.  I've only been beeped a few times, but feck, it scared the shit out of me every time!  Made me swear never to idle again, lol.

I've found that if you try to mudsex someone, they generally respond.

I don't use the beep command.

IMHO, under no circumstances should anything be added to the ldesc to give a hint, that would ruin the atmosphere horridly.

Yes. Beep works. While you mortals are worrying about lurking scrabs and immz eating your brainz, we're busy spamming each other with beeps.

There should be a 'boop' command, that should be for checking.

boop
They aren't away
beep
you beep them
