Title: Did you hear what Halaster said?!?
Post by: mansa on November 02, 2005, 11:04:35 AM
Quote from: "Halaster"After reading more of this thread, I'm starting to agree that it can't hurt too much to change it, because I do agree that if enough people are used to things being a certain way in RL and it's just all whacked here, it's going to make them have a difficult time RP'ing it.  But, if I'm going to bother with it, I don't want to just change it, I want to be a little more creative and come up with something new and fun.

So, having said that, if you have a suggestion for a rank system for the AoD soldiers, please email me (don't don't post it here) and I'll pick one (or mix and match) that works.

You can suggest a new and cool 'zalanthanized' version of the Allanak Military Rank Systems!  Email Halaster about that!  I'm going to do it right now!

I've been waiting for an IC way to kill this bastard.

Edited to Add: Love the idea of our own ranks.

I have some questions though.

Do people prefer names of ranks that are completely fantasy only?
Like: Uubital

Or as long as the name sounds like a southern Arm-ish term, it is a-okay?
Like: Uapitak?

Are Real Life ranks off limits?
Like: Rav-Samal

Or do they have to be of a long dead civilisation?
Like: Sarissa (Spartan Spearman)

I think anything is fair game. So long as it's a serious attempt at an original concept to use for the game world.

yea, maybe, I don't really care, though i'd prefer things that I can easily pronounce.

even try some applicable english words in another language.

I don't like made-up words. So something like "Destroyer" as a rank sounds much better than "Afkghtaplekadasdfasdhewf2345b3tdsatgdfa".

-Greetings, I'm Afkghtaplekadasdfasdhewf2345b3tdsatgdfa Jack Kurac.
-Hey, I'm Destroyer Jack Kurac.

Making up words doesn't usually involve mashing the keyboard. I like the idea of made up titles as long as they sound reasonable. It's not that hard to sound out a word that you've never seen before. Will your version of how a word sounds always conform to what every other player thinks it sounds like? No. Does it matter? No. Is it better than a cheesy title like Destroyer? Obviously.

I actually like all four of Maybenumbers examples. I don't see any reason why you couldn't mix and match.

What, and 'kank' isn't a made-up word?
As long as the word makes sense and feels right, I say go for it.

However, if it ends up being "Rav-Samal", or anything else in Hebrew, butts will be liberally kicked in good measure!  Evil, meet my sword.  Sword, meet evil!  Go for the eyes Boo, go for the eyes!

I'd shy away from words like 'Uubital', though.  They feel forced and unlikely, and I'd like to see some linguistic connection.

Perhaps, since this is the Arm of the Dragon...
Trainee - jambiya
Private - sword
Corporal - bastard sword
Sergeant - spear
Lieutenant - trident
Captain - longbow
Commander - omnious, wicked warrior (OWW).

Closing this thread as the other thread, found here (http://www.zalanthas.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15633), is the same topic.
