Title: T'zai Byn
Post by: Unknown on July 15, 2005, 09:21:48 PM
I was reading, and I even reread the documentation on the T'zai Byn, atleast the part that was available to public eyes and I was unable to find anything relating to magick with regards to the Byn. Does this company accept 'Gemmed' within its ranks? And if they don't, why not?

They are a rough and tumble merc group.  While some of them may individually have dealings with gemmers and the like (just as any other person may) as a group they (like many groups) do not want to be counted among the friends and allies of the gemmers.

This is a typical 'naki sentiment, exceptions being House Oash, the Templarate and the occasional bored or plotting (or both) noble of some other house.

Speaking as some one who's played his share of Bynners and gemmers, I can say that they are (generally) two very different types of people. While the Byn might work with a gemmer on occasion (usually due to extenuating circumstances, or due to the coercion of another group, like the Templarate), the Byn would never hire on a gemmer officially. Why? There are many good reasons. For one, the Byn does do some business in New Tuluk, and trotting in a platoon of gemmed battlemages would be a veritable diplomatic timebomb. The most likely reason is probably just plain old prejudice, however. People hate and fear magick, and they don't want a baby-eating Drovian or soul-corrupting Krathi beside them on the battlefield, let alone sleeping on the mat next to them in the barracks.
The magicker's gem is not a badge. It's not a license saying "I can do magick, fear me". It's a mix between the scarlet 'A' and some sort of dystopian barcode written into the back of your neck. It's to let the common populace know you're a terrible demon to be feared, shunned and avoided, and lets the templarate keep tabs on you.
Having a black gem around your neck is a bad thing. A very bad thing.

If a gemmer was allowed into the Byn as a normal grunt, in the main barracks, he would mysteriously die in the night, much relieving the current troops of the possibilities of having a finger wiggled at them.
