Is there some kind of command to find out an NPC's name?

name <keyword> or ask <keyword> name or something?

It makes you feel all the more special when an imm animated npc tells you their name.

I find that doesn't really work with most NPC's.  Maybe there should be some coding done to put than in?

Idea the NPC with what they should say and then maybe email the Mud with the same idea and a list of what they would say.

Some clans have sticky posts listing the names of commonly seen NPCs in the clan, too. (Thanks, staff!) I think this is really neat, just so you can wave at the gateguard and say "Hi, Jimmy" as you walk in. Maybe the guard wouldn't say his name to just anyone, but people he guards might know.

Sticky posts are a maintenance issue, I think.

Better to create the appropriate response for the name question when creating the NPC.  Maybe have it toggled to only respond to clannies.
