Title: Armageddon Poster Advertisement
Post by: mansa on August 18, 2009, 07:13:17 PM
Hi,

I can't find the old poster, so I'd like to get a new one.

I am going to put it up in the Computer Science room at my university, at the bookstore, and at various comic book shops in my city.

However, I'm terrible with art.  Can someone please make me one?

I'll pay you five bucks canadian, and mail you kisses.

Thanks!

Ps if many people make armageddon adverts, I'll have to pick the best one, because I'm broke!

How large?

And are the kisses only usable by us alone? Or can we later sublease them to another user?

And I think the idea is great man! I would love to write up some posters like that and throw them up in my local area, if only my local area had people who understood english living in it  :-\

I'd like to print them out on 8 x 11

AND

Be able to print two of them on 8 x 11 and cut them in two, like postcards.

Maybe even little business cards.  Its really up to the creative people of our community.

Maybe you all can collaborate on a new catch slogan blurb.

Posters? I'm in Turkey, in a place where speaking English is viewed as a great gift. But heh, my office in campus is very close to English Language and Literature Department. Maybe I can set a very simple one in our campus..

But anyone can tell me whom Defunct is, so I can use 'this' (http://www.flickr.com/photos/33449715@N03/3836627994/)? He/she doesn't seem to be a member of the GDB, even though the background is his/her original submission.

Should a poster just have a cool picture and the URL?  Or should it say "really awesome MUD" too?

I dunno....I'm thinking about littering my city streets with this, I know a few Real Life RP'ers (something I can -never- get into) and they might be intrested in this game......

Might steal a picture from the Submissions bit and have a fiddle.

Edited to add: Just found a poster in the Submissions section. Page 10 Artwork. still gona have that fiddle though.

Just an idea for a slogan though.

Muder, sex, betrayal, sand and heat. Only you can garuntee your survival, when your next drink could be your last, and your next step could be fatal. Can your survive Zalanthas?

and underneath the url, a nice, friendly slogan of: Remember, hold on to your boots. Armageddon is a RP intensive enviroment yadda yadda.

now I need to find some program that'll let me edit a picture or two

Well, there are a lot of people out there that don't know what MUDs are.  Some of them may have a preconceived notion about MUDs, or have only tried a couple of hack'n'slash in their time.  Depending on where you are leaving these, you may want to try to capture certain groups that might be looking for a high-quality RP experience:

> WoW players, especially those that play on RP servers.

"Not finding the type of RP experience you want on WoW RP servers?  Come try a -real- RP experience at Armageddon MUD.

> People that might be looking for, or have been in, D&D or gaming groups.

"Wish you could find good RP at any hour of the day?  Become a part of the Armageddon MUD.

> People that are already used to, or prefer, a textual environment (i.e. avid readers, fantasy fans)

"Wish you could play a part in a living novel?  Take your best stab at Armageddon MUD."

> Poor gamers that are looking for free/low cost ways to have fun.

"Armageddon MUD -- the best RP environment you'll never pay for."

> People frustrated by gaming groups or RPG's that don't provide them with a mature/serious RP environment.

"In-Character all the time?  So are we, at Armageddon MUD."

> Challenges to people's ability to RP.

"Think you can role-play?  Prove it -- at Armageddon MUD."

> Challenges to people's choice of RP environment.

"Trying to find good RP on WoW is like trying to ice skate uphill.  Try a -real- RP game with Armageddon MUD."

Just a few examples, and certainly nothing more than 5-minute attempts to demonstrate what I mean. ;)

I dig, I dig.  I think just something that provides a little more light on what it actually -is- helps.  I see countless URLs in a day, but if I was a person interested in MUDs/RPIs and I actually saw a poster-advert for one?  That would grab my attention, and I might write it down.

It's pretty, but I'm personally against any post that specifically draws attention to copyrighted material that the game seems to be attempting to move away from.  So in other words, that poster is neat, but I'd change gith with any other number of possible ways to die.  Also I think it is a little misleading to use material that would make someone think darksun, we're really not.

This reminds me that the term "Interactive Fiction" might do very well on a poster blurb. It'd turn the head of most anyone who was around in the golden days of clever games and warm their fuzzy little hearts.

That blurb about D&D frustrates me a little. The players at my weekly sessions refuse to play on the basis it has no graphics. Even after I explained the game to them in D&D terms (Using Dark Sun numbers, etc.)

Why not just come right out and say "It's like playing a Pen and Paper, only in a constant world."

Replace Pen and Paper with whatever floats your boat.

We're advertising to people never having played a MUD, or have only played Hack and Slash before. What keeps most people in, is the perma-death and role-play required atmosphere. Past that, anyone that doesn't play obviously just wants their +10 Krakadoom Warhammer.

I like the addition of the all-staff.

Also FS, I can play with it a bit more and work out what seems like an extra space.

Before I make more adjustments and clutter this thread with posts of the same poster, are there any other suggestions or adjustments anyone else would like to suggest?

"Mull" and "join" shouldn't be capitalized.  Maybe a little spot color to liven it up, in the text or the figure?  This looks so cool, Potaje.
Title: Re: Armageddon Poster Advertisement
Post by: LauraMars on October 31, 2009, 01:13:30 PM
I think there should be just a wee bit more white space on top and bottom.  The curl from the R is smushed right up against the top, and more white space on the bottom will give the poster a bit more weight.

I realize if you're designing this for print that's not necessarily, uh, necessary, since printers have their own margins, but if you intend to use this on a website anywhere there should be some more white space on the borders.

The "And it's free!" bit looks sort of lost and lonely where it is.  Put it up with the rest of the advertising text, it's screwing with the page balance.  I also like the tear-off tabs suggestion someone mentioned earlier.

I love the poster, it's really awesome, and will look even more awesome with just a wee bit of tweaking.

perhaps a color wash/water color (something not too flashy) on the gith clit and leave the figure black and white.

As I'm sure you know, Potaje, you can go to Image>Canvas Size and click the center of the arrow boxes, and enter in .5 to add a half-inch margin all around the background layer.  Then you can Paint-Bucket fill it with white, if your bg is transparent.

AMAZING!  I am jealous of your talent!

Just a couple of teeny, tiny things:

1. "An In-Character Roleplaying Intensive"  An In-Character Roleplaying Intensive...what?  You've got plenty of adjectives, but we need a noun, or your statement makes no sense.  Maybe... "An In Character, Roleplaying Intensive Text Game," or "An In Character, Roleplaying Intensive Experience."

2. "Why mull it over, join in a living novel from your own computer."  I'd suggest splitting this into two sentences, as "Why mull it over" is an interrogative phrase, and "Join in a living novel from your own computer" is an imperative phrase.  You can't have both in one sentence.  So - Why mull it over?  Join in a living novel from your own computer.  Also, I think "Since 1992" could be more prominently displayed somewhere, as it is really quite impressive for a mud to last that long.

3. Your tear-off strips should be upended so that there can be more of them, and be easier to tear off.

I've made a rough edited version of what I'm talking about below. I had to use mspaint, as this computer does not have photoshop, but I'm sure you get the general idea.  These are all just suggestions!  You are doing a great job. :)

This looks awesome! If you can save a copy at 8.5x11" I'm going to print some out on Tuesday and start putting them up at my school.

Ahem, not quite true. But a little exaggeration is ok I guess.  Plus if we count inactive, hiatus, legend types, then you're spot on!

Anway - nicely done Potaje, it's great to see the initiative taken and I hope we'll see the results in more players.

What's the print resolution of the main file, and can you put one online somewhere for us to download?

Facebook always resizes images it uploads.

If you could tinypic it, we could snag it and then we can upload it to the ArmageddonMUD website in full form.

Ps, KISSES IN THE MAIL.
