Title: Scramble for purchase
Post by: JackGibbons on February 12, 2016, 12:24:13 AM
So, I mentioned discovering this feature in the help file improvements thread. Is there anything considered publicly discussable on how it works? For example, with a very good climbing skill, I've only had the opportunity to try this three times and have 'found nothing' all three times. That's not a lot of testing, but it makes me wonder: is success possible only by reversing the direction you were going prior to the fall, or would any (presumably non-down) exit work? For example, there are multi-room faces where the direction at the time of falling could have been east/west. Would only going, say, west after you fell upon entering 'east' work?

Thanks.

if you are falling, type in any direction to try to save yourself.

at very high levels it is more successful than not.

also, you have to gauge how willing you are to lower your hp for a "chance" at not falling to your doom.

a fall you could have survived might kill you.

Don't bother unless below is certain death.

If your climb skill is at (master), and you just happen to get the 1 in 100 shit-roll climb slip, it's probably safer to scramble.

So here's the deal:  before you make any climb movement, you need to do the math for yourself and decide (before you move) whether you're going to scramble or not if you fail.

Consider things like:
Have you climbed this cliff before? If so, how often have you been failing?
When you climbed up, what was your fail:success ratio?
Are you more burdened now than when you climbed up?
Are you more tired?
How many "rooms" is it to the bottom?
How many hp do you have left?  How much stun?
Can you afford to be KO'ed for a while at the bottom?

There are probably more, but that's what comes to mind.  It boils down to "have a plan, and stick to the plan."

Thanks, folks. That makes sense. Unless I just had bad luck on my scramble rolls, it looks like you can only get one or two tries in before you drop a room. Can you keep trying as you fall in additional rooms until it finally works?

Yep.

You can, but you might not want to.

If it's a 7-room fall then sure, scramble, but if it's a 2-room fall, scrambling 3-4 times might just kill you when otherwise you'd have been fine.

Byn there, done that.
