Title: Greetings from yet another newbie
Post by: Amioun on January 22, 2014, 04:02:46 PM
Hello everyone.

I just registered in Arm for the first time and, quite frankly, still very reluctant to actually start going out there. As far as I've read in here, things are so dangerous to the point of inexperienced people having to sketch a new character every two RL days. Also, people seem quite keen on boots these days, so I wonder if making a tailor would suffice to buddy up this mass of bare-feet vagrants and burglars.

Anyway, hope to interact with people soon. And also to keep my footwear on my feet - as intended.

Welcome to Armageddon! Don't be afraid to go out there, but also remember you're playing a PERSON. So be cautious if you'd be cautious.

The newbie boots have been a thing for YEARS. They will take them. And Staff like brains.

Welcome.  The helper chat (http://www.armageddon.org/intro/helpers.php) is a great resource for a new player who has questions or concerns, please don't be shy about connecting to the chat with any questions you have.

The boots thing is a long running joke about the cutthroat nature of the game - that your character could be killed over a pair of boots, and it wouldn't be regarded by the people of Zalanthas as an unusual event.

However - from a player's perspective, it's not all that common for a PC to really and truly kill your PC over a pair of boots. As stated, it's a running joke (though it *could* happen).

Also, you -can- easily go through a character every two days. But honestly, most players don't. If you make attempts to stick with the documentation, don't try to be a "special snowflake" your first time out, and heed advice to make a human in either Tuluk or Allanak and make attempts to get into some kind of clan - your character could last months, just as easily as it could last hours.

Welcome!

Make as many mistakes as you possibly can now, while your character is still young, that's my advice.  If you think you're risk averse now, wait until when you have 20+ days into the character.  Besides, learning is fun.  I mean, dying is fun.  I mean, it's the same thing.

Welcome!  You have made the right choice in joining this game.

I created my first character almost 6 years ago.  I expected him to die within a couple of RL days, and it was a close thing.  He lived for two weeks short of a RL year, and I loved every moment of his life.  The pain, the joy, the suffering and the glory.  He is the one that taught me not to fear the death of a character.

It's often said that we pluck these PCs from the NPC world and mess with their lives.  If this is true, do it well.  Make them LIVE!!!  The worst you can do is make the last little bit of their lives boring.

Now go, young padawan.  Create your character!  Join us!

Welcome to Armageddon.

I wanted to let you know, yes outside the gates is pretty dangerous. Try finding a house or something to join that does go out of the gates. Or try to make some friends. Not all characters are out to get you as soon as you step outside the gates.

On the other hand making a tailor would keep you inside as long as you can find someone to get you supplies or somewhere to find them. However, even if you do store whatever out-of-gates character you might have now and play the tailor the next time you come back to play a character that is supposed to be out-of-the-gates you'll still run into the same problem. You still won't know what lies outside of the gates or what is easier to hunt, or whatnot. This is because tailors are always advised never to leave the gates.

Either way no matter what choice you make remember that Armageddon is a game. The point of a game is to have fun. So if you aren't having fun you should try something else that you would find more fun.

Pretty new myself and loving it.  I'm also older than 2 RL days and have yet to die. :)  Have fun!

Have fun!  ;D If you like complicated stories, you could make one of those too (like having murder or noble blackmail in your initial before-play background) but I'd wait until I was reasonably sure of being able to survive inside a city/town.

Welcome to Arm!

I'm a fairly new player, and I was terrified when I started. I didn't understand half of the commands or most of what was expected of me. You kind of have to hold your breath for a second and just jump right in. Most people are very understanding that you're new, and will give you time to adjust. Finding a clan or House to work with will be a huge help! My first character is still kicking, so you can last more than 2 RL days, and they still have their boots too!

Relax, have fun, and enjoy the game!

New too, and boots still on (maybe just barely)! Getting into a clan, they'll help you keep your boots... or at least if it doesn't all work out, they'll keep your boots. At least your boots will be among (maybe)friends.

Thank you for all the valuable feedback and suggestions of what (not) to do. Yeah, if you don't jump right in, then its purposeless to read and learn all the material.

Just a note: when I finally got some player interaction, I was away for maybe 2 minutes to close my garage and so didn't respond. Completely forgot about the GONE command until I checked the screen. Newbie stuff, I reckon. Whoever you may be, sorry about that!

Welcome to Armageddon! This is a wonderful game that will keep you coming back for more...and more...and then probably a little bit more. The player community is a great one as well. My advice is, ask! If you have questions send in a request to the staff. If you're in game and it seems like an urgent issue? Wish up! While some would have you believe the staff are here to make our gaming experience as miserable as possible, that is not the case. They're a great group of people who volunteer their time to create and manage a wonderful universe. They might seem a little rough around the edges, though they truly do wish for you to succeed. Best of luck!

Welcome. Best of luck. Lots of fun to be had out there, even if you do lose your boots in the process.

As a fellow new player I can tell you I am petrified by the thought of departing from my safe routine and visiting places outside the "safe zone".

But, I lucked out and an experienced player steered me into place, disregarding my perfectly good boots.

Problem is I know nothing about how to get out of trouble except for: "go back to the safe place".  I'm becoming very confident in blowing bubbles at these proverbial beginner swim lessons, but figure at some point they're going to dump sharks in the pool.

Wanting to keep a character alive, is sometimes the downside, rather than the upside. It's actually not hard at all to play it safe, as you're discovering. The hard part, is to let go, and allow your character to do whatever it does - organically, regardless of the risk.

If your character -would- be interested to learn what's just around the bend - then it'd make sense for your character to - go round the bend. Maybe he'll try to sneak. Maybe he'll actually have the sneak skill. Or - maybe he won't. The sneak skill is a coded skill - your character doesn't know shit from shinola about the code. Maybe he'll try to hide. Maybe he'll puff up his chest, raise his shield, and run around the bent, sword held high and issuing a loud war-cry - thinking he'll scare off whatever's there.

And maybe he'll die.

That's okay too. You just close your client, open your Notepad, and start writing up your next character.

Hi, welcome. I'm new too or newish I guess. Still learning everything.

I came here from a game where people would deliberately escort you to get money to "help" you and then mug and kill you for it before you could buy anything and sending you right back to cgen as a welcome.

Its not like that here. The community is good, and people are understanding. They put up with me and helped me and still are. Hope you have fun.
