Title: Mudding without a client
Post by: Ulga on April 03, 2022, 03:35:33 PM
So, I have a ton of free-time at work. I would love to be able to arm at work, but my company's network security prevents downloading or installing any programs, and has telnet access blocked.
About a year ago, I was able to utilize Heroku's chrome extension for an in-browser telnet application, and that worked perfectly. It doesnt work anymore, for whatever reason. I'm also horrible at phone mudding.

Does anybody have any ideas on how I can circumvent corporate roadblocks put in place to prevent me from chopping up giant bugs with bone swords while at work?

You can try Grapeline's client: https://grapevine.haus/games/ArmageddonMUD/play

I wish you luck and I thank Nao of pointing that out a few months ago.

Shoot. It doesnt work. the Heroku chrome extension will get the game fired up, but locks up after about 2 minutes.
This one doesnt fire up.
Starting to look like i might look into buying an extra cheapo laptop for the purposes of being paid to MUD.

I use... Mudportal at work and MudSlinger when Mudportal is down.

I don't know if you can use them if Telnet is blocked though.

If you can use most websites unrestricted, a site with an in-browser client should work, provided it handles the telnet server side.

I've had success with running mushclient off of a thumb drive, as it doesn't require installation. However if telnet is blocked you're SOL.

If you can bring your own device that could work, especially with phone tethering. Aside from that your only option is finding an in-browser client that works.

Edit: You could try PuTTy, it's a full client that can run from a flashdrive. It's a tool for direct server communication so the interface isn't the nicest but it's very flexible. I was able to connect on a Win10 device that does not have telnet client enabled via PuTTy

If you're able to run Putty off a thumb drive and have a computer running at home, you could potentially connect to your home computer on an unblocked port (e.g. 443, the default https port) and then do whatever.

Note that serious IT folks will probably notice these kinds of shenanigans.

Any of y'all have the cloud-fu on tap to set this up? https://github.com/mudchina/webtelnet
