General Discussion / Re: Are you ready?
Last post by Kavrick - Today at 09:32:55 PM
I'm currently dying due to wanting to play like four different concepts. I'm pretty damn excited but at the same time I feel like I'm gonna miss out if I pick the wrong thing. The gemmed temples stuff seems like it could be really cool, but the stuff with Kurac with the riders is interesting and it's my favorite GMH and I've always been a Two-Moons fanboy so that's also on my list of things I wanna do.

Really kills when it feels like there's gonna be so many great options, especially with the new nobles mixup and how that should touch on things.

General Discussion / Are you ready?
Last post by Cowboy - Today at 09:22:25 PM
I think I am ready.   Twenty-five characters in various degrees of completion.  Some name and short description only, some that add the long description but no background, and completed ones with a background.  I've reread all posts regarding recent changes.   Tested myself to see if I still remember the common commands. (I am a little shaky on that) Put in a karma review request.  I like playing half-giants now and then.   Asked my wife if I could play a leadership role and she said no, just like she has for the last 10 years.  But I am ready.  Real ready!

General Discussion / Re: Discuss: Changes To PK Gui...

I read the guidance doc and I don't see a difference, it seems pretty consistent to staff expectations for the last few years.

It's tough to get these elaborate scenes folks are talking about unless you're able to completely incapacitate or trap your target. Not always gonna happen! Backstab, for example, is a very legit way to PK but will very likely be executed by a hidden PC with very little visible rp for the target to enjoy.

Orrr

"A black-fletched, obsidian-headed arrow flies in from the south" may be what you get, and it may be completely justified for IC reasons.

Yeah, you're a raider, and the guy refused you so you killed him. That's fine, but how did you kill him? Did you roleplay out the incident or did you just type kill noob? The world can be harsh and satisfying in a roleplaying way. I argue that a well roleplayed out pk makes the world seem more gritty and real than hack/slash cartoonish instant code only pk.

I always have the fear that you will think "Boy, I hope a gigantic spider doesn't attack me while I'm out grebbing." and then staff will send a gigantic spider, maybe thinking you're asking for it.

Code Discussion / Ability to locate and pickup i...
Last post by Lotion - Today at 07:25:24 PM
There should be a time consuming and interrupted by combat way to pickup an item in the darkness without the assistance of an effect that grants the ability to see in the dark or makes it bright enough in the room to see. We have a command with a name similar to this sort of action "search" but considering how sparsely that skill is distributed I wouldn't want to see it done this way.

Code Discussion / Re: Suggestion: Make it so you...

Took a lot of time to think on this. And posted a bit on discord about it.

Came up with 3 real arguments for and against point buy. And came up with an alternate solution that might work better than pure point buy. A kind of best of both worlds.

Removing a lot of context from those points.
Cons
1. Point Buy is very mechanistic. And leads to hyper optimization of characters over playing to story. In short it leads to justification as means, rather than means as justification. IE I have X stat, this is why, not This is why I have X stat. The order there is important.
2. Point Buy would lead to a need to file away at the niches, no longer would you be likely to see terrible, or absolutely incredible for example. The costs would be prohibitive in a balanced system to include those ranges.
3. Point Buy allows for some truly grotesque builds that would because of hyper optimization allow for 0 karma griefing that would be prevented or more easily noticable in the current systems.
Pros
1. Point buy would allow more agency by the player to dictate roles and allow greater freedom of choice in player builds.
2. Point buy would equalize a bit the field of play, it would become your choice, rather than randomnesses choice whether or not your characters were statistically inclined for combat for instance.
3. The nature of pointbuy would open up a bit more the information on race statistic ranges, and allow better comparisons to be made. At least in an ideal system where enough information was given to a player to provide them with an educated choice.

I would propose a hybrid system.

Stats are rolled as they are now.

Then 1 is subtracted from each stat.

And you are given the option to rearrange those 4 points. With a max of 3 put into any one stat.

In our current system that would not overbalance and allow too much boosting of one stat, but would allow you to correct your stats to playable ranges if you were to roll something untenable if you include the class bonuses.

General Discussion / Re: Armor repair

Agreed on this.

The skill as a whole was broken completely as well last K new.

Heck the effect in general was broken as well for everyone but the NPC last I knew. Even for non-standard sources of armor repair.

So, one of the best ways to get into the habit of doing thinks.

Any time you are saying something ICly.

Type out your say,

then also type out a think, that adds additional context.

Every two or three poses try to update your mood or throw in a feel.

"So what do you want me to do anyway?" said Amos the Hitman to the Guild Middle man.

think What's his angle? And what am not seeing?

feel cautious, the hairs on the back of my neck standing up.

"I want you to execute the contract our boss ordered, but I have an additional requirement for you." The Guild Middle man asks simple and sweet. "Cause as much property damage as possible as you do so."

think He just wants me to be caught. I should clarify this with the boss. This could be a test.

emote nod simply.
hemote eyes go towards the door. Mind clearly elsewhere.

"I can do that." Amos responds.

Looks a lot better from your end, and from a storytelling end.

Than.

"So what do you want me to do anyway?" said Amos the Hitman.
