I love sniffing things with my characters. I regularly sniff items or rooms, in hopes that they have a script describing the room's atmosphere in general, as some do. I feel that the command, while simple, has tons of potential, and for that I propose:

An ability for people to "smell" persons or animals when they sniff.

Due to years spent hunting the wastes, rangers or hunters would know the smell of their prey.

Certain races (desert elves and gith, perhaps) would have a defined smell of sense, in that they would possibly be able to smell other humanoids as well, beyond the scent of mere animals.

It would work something like this:

>sniff
You smell a quirri.
You smell a quirri.
You smell an elf.

In a sense, this skill could be used like scan, except you cannot break a person's hide with its usage, but merely catch their "scent"

I know such use of the skill is already used in game, though it is -very- limited. (sorry if too IC)

Works for me.
A gaunt, yellow-skinned gith shrieks in fear, and hauls ass.

If you -want- me to think that your character is a hybrid of a black kryl and a white push-broom shaped like a penis, then you've done a great job

I think rangers should be able to, at  least.

I don't see why it wouldn't work.. But then sniff would become a skill or what?..
uppers.

How would a ranger be able to smell anything in a huge outdoor room unless the npc/pc was very, very close by?

What's more, how would they smell something if that something was downwind?

It's already in.  Right now, only one type of PC gets it, however.

I know. This is why I wish for it to be expanded, so other races may benefit. =)

Other races probably haven't developed their sniffers to the extent that the race that gets sniff does.

I say no.

You have no idea what you speak of.

During the Vietnam war, Vietnamese guerilla warriors managed to hone the ability to detect American soldiers by smelling their shaving cream.  They'd be able to escape, and possibly even set up an ambush before the Americans even got a glimpse of them.

I don't think it should be given to desert elves though.

Well if one type of pc already gets it then I say no, cause it has to be genetics I woudl think.

I cannot believe you even posted after that..

It's genetics!
No, it's not, here's why.....
No, it's genetics!

This went both ways. Some Americans, in the pitch black, were able to smell the Vietnamese sneaking up on them.

The human sense of smell is very powerful, it's just that it tends to work on a more subconscious level.

Rather than implementing the code for this, one could simply argue that the scan ability includes the use of scent as well as vision.  Use scan and, if you successfully spot someone, roleplay out catching their odor.

I agree with Kauket, with the exception that I think the hunt skill would fit the mold better than scan.

Unless your quarry is invisible and hovering above the ground, in which case you "smell" them using scan.  But yeah, either way, one could roleplay this using the present code.

You smell an elf.

I knew something smelt fishy around here....

Those elves...you've got to watch out for them, not just watch but smell out for them...

I like the idea for the most part.

One thing I would like though was if you could all of a sudden walk into a room, say one where a bomb just blew up....

You walk in, immediatly you get: It's strong of gunpowder in here.

then you sniff: Sniff
and you get: the smell of gunpowder rests in the air.

As well as auto triggered smells....

Just barely using perfume, or smoking spice. Things like that.
Crackageddon.... once an addict, always an addict

some rooms have the smell in the description at the bottom.
