Feasibility: Obstacle Course

Started by Esadal, June 26, 2016, 06:10:14 PM

How feasible would it be to create an obstacle course?  By this, I mean a thing where you have to jump from platform to platform, climb up a wall, shimmy along a small ledge, fun things like this?

I think it might be fun to create some kind of harsher terrain for certain locations for the purposes of sparring, or just gladiatorial events and the like..

Maybe even a race of some sort?

Just an idea that I'm tossing out!  Let me know what you all think.
How about a scavenger hunt?

This is a great idea. Not having to go find some stupidly secluded and yet safe place in the city for my AoD private/byn runner and whatever else to practice his climb would be great.

I'd like this to be a constructed thing for the army, or maybe they think its stupid and the Byn take up the idea, or something.

I'd wanted this to exist for the Tor Academy, but not for the Byn.

While they're really basic and really all of the military clans should have one, I was trying to come up with ideas to incentive Academy training.  With the Academy closed, I don't see why this wouldn't be awesome for just about every military clan (since I'm no longer set on one clan's need for relevance via greater code resources).

I am not sure exactly how it would be best implemented since we don't really promote stat gains and such (which is the ultimate goal of an obstacle course), but it could indeed focus on such things as climb, ride, and perhaps other 'side skills' of warriors/common subguilds.

Not sure how practical it is, really, but no downvote from me if we can come up with cool things for it to do, and a good functionality!
She wasn't doing a thing that I could see, except standing there leaning on the balcony railing, holding the universe together. --J.D. Salinger

If a clan did get it, I'd like to see them receiving the climb skill.
I remember staff talking about how some clans receive skills/can learn certain skills and that'd be something good to have.

Then again I don't know why clan would be good at climbing.

(off topic)

Jihelu, are you just the opposite/negative of Badskeelz? Because I imagine he'd be all for this, if there was 25% chance of you failing at the obstacle course and breaking something like an arm or leg, resulting in losing endurance, or having HP halved for an IG month. Also because of your pic.

I'm just looking for a general consensus. Or Moe's opinion. Either one generally can be accepted as canon.

I'm not really a fan of obstacle courses. I like PCs actually going and doing something (including clan PCs), instead of going into a room at the designated hour and typing >train.

I agree with this.

I'm not sure that was what was suggested.  This very much might be a courtyard with nothing more than a beetle, a climbing wall, and a dung pit.

The obstacle course could be...
a) carry some number of heavy objects from point a to point b,
b) (climb) up one side of a wall to a platform
c) Evade a "guard" NPC or PC (flee) across the platform
d) (climb) down to the ground
e) Wrestle a target to the ground (Subdue) with the target also trying to subdue and toss you into the pit.

I don't think OP means a scripted obstacle course "craft" (like SoI had) that just ran you through a number of skill checks.

Ah well you should just kill those PCs. They're not worth the time of plotting creatively against.

Isn't that the rinth?  :-*
as IF you didn't just have them unconscious, naked, and helpless in the street 4 minutes ago

Nice.  Reminds me a little of good old Dragonrealms.  Can I script this obstacle course while I look up memes on the net?

This is exactly what I was thinking of!  Something that people can do just to run around and be safe, that can be used for competitions or something of that sort.  Perhaps make some kind of city-wide competition for who can do it the fastest, or something.

Meh. I think it would just get abused by twinks. It's nothing that couldn't get accomplished right now, either, with a bit of initiative and imagination.

Not even all that much imagination.

Allanak is a 3D environment. While you're walking around the streets occasionally type "look up".

I've also seen Bynners scaling the wall outside their barracks, so I know this sort of training is occurring.

I don't think clans need more reasons to stay cloistered in their compounds any more than they do right now.

Played a Dunecutter, it's great. Great clan, well designed, very PC leadership friendly. Apply if you haven't dipped your toes in yet!!

This is really fair, and makes a great point. We don't need more stuff with 'potential' for abuse. Maybe one House or the Arm could get an obstacle-like course room or something, but, I don't know, the more I think about it, the more I imagine one person on during off-peak hours just running through it over and over and over.

Each of the individual things this could accomplish (subdue training, climbing, fleeing) has the potential to be a pretty neat adventure from a leader PC.

"Hey gang, we're heading to the tablelands." "Why boss?" "I wanna see how well you can get out of holes once I've thrown you in them." "uh.... yes sir?"
