Surviving in red storm and luirs?

Started by Lutagar, September 15, 2013, 01:09:10 PM

I've always kind of thought about playing in Luirs or Red storm, but I've got to admit, I'm worried about not knowing how to survive and dying like a bitch in the first hour.

Allanak has salt gathering, Tuluk has clay digging and cotton picking. Has Luirs and Red storm got any relatively easy ways of making 'sid/not starving?

Any tips for a first time player to Luirs and Red storm?

Storm has spice shifting.  Doesn't it?

Red Storm is probably one of the easiest location to survive in and prosper, if you pick the right subguilds or class. You have a few choices that allow you to make coins without ever leaving the walls, and if you do, you're still near enough salting grounds to make coins from that as well.

Luir's is different in the fact that everything there is mostly owned/ran by Kurac, so if you're planning to make a guy who mostly just sticks to Luir's, then you'll have to deal/make friends with Luir's. Unfortunately, as far as a I know, there are no Luir's specific only jobs to survive on like Storm has.

But then, you're still near enough Tuluk and its hunting ground that making a hunter would work mostly the same as you would if you started in Tuluk.

And to answer Barsook, Storm has a lot more than just spice shifting.

If you want to play a dedicated stormer I got nothing but respect. Spicing, sure. Subguild tailor/master tailor are your friends. Its a big deal in storm. Or just get any old crafting subguild. Various groups will often come down to storm, I'd say being a crafter helps with those sorts of interactions. Avoid the alleys. One of my first pcs ever was from storm and I'm like YO, so you're a mul gladiator, eh? Whats up bro!. Bad things happened. Dont engage in criminal activities. Those guards mean business.

In past months its been easier considering a few variables I cant mention, but I dont know what the current pc-policitcal climate is like. If there is nothing happening at the moment, try to start something yourself. You'd be doing everyone a favor. Its a great place to rp.

Playing a ranger also helps.

Try to get on with a silt skimmer crew, if there is one currently going on. I've heard it's pretty fun to do.
I remember recruiting this Half elf girl. And IMMEDIATELY taking her out on a contract. Right as we go into this gith hole I tell her "Remember your training, and you'll be fine." and she goes "I have no training." Then she died

It's not terribly difficult to stay alive in RS, the two main problems I would say are that the wildlife in the area are not to be triffled with.  The other being the constant blinding storms that occure, see the town is located so close to the silt sea that its easy enough to get turned around and just walk in and drown yourself by accident.  Also if you're not keen on solo RP then Luirs may be the better option for you as you've got all of Kurac roaming about, not to mentions that it's the hub between the two city states so you're bound to run into fresh faces passing through quite often.

The first thing to learn anywhere in the game is how to survive.  After learning survival all there is left to focus on is bringing "harsh" world of Zalanthas alive.  If you can find someone to show you the ropes, that's great.  If things go well, they'll probably try to include you in any kind of plot action that they have going on. If it's realistic, build some kind of relationship those you find.   Ideally they can become an ally, but this is Zalanthas, chances are even if they seem like an ally, they're using you.

By design, Red Storm Village and Luir's Outpost have some of the lowest player populations so whomever you are playing will be happy to see almost anyone there, the trick is finding realistic ways to become involved and roleplay together.  These are the fringes of civilizations, life is hard and people are gritty and act accordingly.  Not to disparage any other areas of the game world, but in Red Storm and Luir's they don't take kindly to bunny huggers (in fact I think bunny hugging in general is now frowned upon wherever you go).  If at first people seem standoffish and unsociable, dive in and show them that you're a serious roleplayer.  Many fringe area players are can "jaded vets" that don't want to waste their valuable playtime messing with "newbs" that are going to die tomorrow.  This is a roleplaying game, if you act awesome you are awesome.  If you show that you can role-play and do it well, they'll be sure to reciprocate and you may just make some fast friends (or some interesting enemies).

Surviving in Luir's as a non-Kuraci, non-Wilderness person is hard as balls, but it can be done if you make sure to pick your friends and do everything for a little coin. I played a translator that lived in Luir's for a few months at a time once. I was always -just- on the verge of broke, but always managed to scrape enough coins for food and always made sure someone had my skin filled.

I loved that someone.

That one dwarf who was so dwarfee it was just... There was no "ruff o" in them. It was amazing.

They should make a 'job' in Luir's where you try to roll tight joints of spice and then sell them to a Kuraci agent.

Or a "be a Kuraci whore job" Where you 'rent self' to random NPC's. The more you do this the higher your skill goes up and the better the chance that one will accept your advances and pay you 20 'sids.

Here are my non-guild specific guidelines for surviving Red Storm (and Luir's Outpost). They're not about getting you rich or powerful and just about surviving until you can find your character's niche.

  • Conserve your starting coins. There might be some nifty clothes you want to buy or fancy foods you want to try but if they're expensive wait till you have a handle on the whole survival thing. Red Storm has a newbie shop with some discount clothes/items. Use most of those coins for cheap food and water. Both places have cheap food.

  • Stick to the main public areas. Both Luir's and Red Storm have areas you shouldn't be poking about in without good reason. The alleys, the Kurac only areas and anywhere with a guard in front of it. Remember "Curiousity killed the Quirri" (and the Bushranger many many times!)

  • Foraging is your friend. Both Luir's and Red Storm have things you can forage for close enough to the gates that you can walk. Remember to watch your stamina so you can jozhal back to the gates if there is any trouble. Ranger or Scavenger subguild is even better since you can forage for edible things but you can forage for other things with any guild. Don't take an animal with you since you might not be able to cover the stable fees when you start off and all your coins should be going to water and cheap food.
Important note: In Red Storm you will also need a spice sifter to forage for spice. When you uncover a deposit of silty sand etwo the sifter and use it on the patch. There is a fellow outside the Kurac emporium in the bazaar who will give you coins in exchange for bulk spice when you offer him the container they are in. If you're desperate for coins and don't have enough for the bulk dealer you can often sell a couple grains of each variety to the merchant inside the emporium.

  • Tavern foraging. You can forage for food and drinks without being a ranger or a scavenger by looking at the bar and tables in your local tavern. Rarely you can find full drinks and whole food on the tables but more often you'll find partially eaten food or dregs of ale. As they say "Waste not, want not."

  • Scavenging from the dead. If you're lucky and cautious you can find pickings from the reckless. Stripping corpses was once listed on the website as a profession of it's own. Often I will not purchase an animal in Red Storm and just stick to walking distance of the village till I can find one standing over the fellow who didn't follow these guidelines, spent all their money on fancy boots and then were forced to try and hunt a scrab or beetle on their own. A tame animal standing alone in the wastes is often a sure sign you will find a body at it's feet but remember whatever killed them could still be lurking close by. Be cautious and quick!

  • Boredom is a killer. Both Luir's Outpost and Red Storm can at times be a lonely place. Find something you can do inside the village and alone on days of poor visibility or when there are dangerous beasts right outside the gates. More than anything else I've found that "just wanting to do something" is the leading cause of death on Zalanthas.

Red Storm - I think if you've grown up here you'd know that the critters are very lethal. Very lethal indeed. So play cautiously. Like in the Rinth.

It doesn't matter how cautious you are when things can outrun you and instagib you...unless by "cautious" you mean "never leave the gates," in which case:  subguild tailor.

Spelled it out to you. Har har har.

Red Storm is a place where people keep to themselves, generally. Everyone has something to hide. Just don't go stirring up trouble. As with most of Zalanthas, being overtly magickal and magickin' all over the place will stir up trouble. And they really don't like trouble like that in Red Storm. I believe the IG rumor board has more particulars.

    Rules of Red Storm:

    1) Don't cast in public.

    2) Don't have obvious magickal effects on you in public.

    3) Mind your goddamn business.

In other words - you're allowed to *be* a magicker, in Red Storm. The *use* of magicks, however, is not permitted, and showing up with visible effects of magicks surrounding/covering you is also not permitted.

This is an interaction/conflict based game.  People are going to try to initiate interaction/conflict.  Personally, I don't have any fun when I make a PC whose personality is "speak to no one and keep my hood up at all times", so even when I do roll a RS based character, I'll try to find a way to start a conversation with someone else.  If you have more fun when your character is not speaking to anybody or interacting with anybody, then...just don't talk to anyone, and avoid taverns.

RS very specifically has room descriptions that shows people do -not- want to make casual contact. They want to go about their business and be left alone. I hope you reroll there often and are buried outside the gates often because of your "INTERACTION/CONFLICT."

    The Silt claims us all.

As for the rest there is a difference between not being nosy and completely anti-social. Folks in Red Storm do keep to themselves and (generally) do not pry into other peoples business and yes in many areas they do just walk along, hoods up heads down. There are other areas where this is not the case in Red Storm. A tavern is a social environment, especially for folks who mosey up to the bar and have a brawl, the difference is in Red Storm the conversation is usually pretty obvious and superfluous things (Spiced ale is good, Allanak is stupid, sand is scratchy, beetles killed someone again) and it'll take quite a bit of time (read weeks/months not hours) yammering about these generic topics before trust for more personal discussion crops up (like name, occupation, asking if that weird mole near your nipple looks normal or not)

If a random stranger approaches in a hoods up, heads down area or when you're secluded in a booth like that I do agree with Jane Shephard, Stab 'em for being nosy and feed their body to the silt. I don't think everyone needs to keep to themselves entirely in Red Storm however. There are limited social aspects to the village.

I would think the same rules of a bar apply in Red Storm as anywhere.

Are you sitting at the bar?  You are probably more open to talking or looking for interaction.  You've come to the "common area" of the common area, the place where people mingle.

Are you sitting in a booth off to the side?  You may be open to conversation but you did not approach the "mingling area" to seek it out.  You're there to enjoy a drink in silence, possibly alone, or you're waiting for specific company to come.

In places like Red Storm, you might end up being jumped by the locals for annoying the wrong person that was not looking for conversation.  The trick, of course, is learning the signs of who may or may not be interested in talk.
