Guilds and subguilds, skill levels

Ok, so without delving into any specifics, can someone please explain to me how maximum skill levels for skills are determined? What I mean is, say I have guild X and subguild Y, say they both get skill D, did I just gimp my character? Furthermore, in the case of skill branching, will subguild skill prevent the skill branch from allowing you to learn the skill to full effectiveness? If both guild and subguild (and possibly race) overlap on some skills, will it be possible to be even more effective at the top end than you would if they hadn't overlapped?

In the case of overlapping skills from guild/subguild, it always overlaps in your favor.  You get the highest of the two caps and the highest of the two starting levels.

Subguilds won't prevent branching, but IIRC if the subguild pushes a skill above branching level you still will need to gain on that skill to branch.

Ah, then one more question, do max skill levels go above master if you have them overlapping? I dunno if they go higher than that... Dunno if that's an ok question to ask or if I have to find out IC somehow. Thanks for the response.

No, master is the max.

You don't combine/add skill max levels (or starting level) from guild and subguild, you just get the highest one of the two.

Ok, I see... Thanks.
