General Questions Thread

Started by thatkid, September 22, 2012, 11:29:31 PM

Because I can't be the only dude/tte who's got a bunch of tiny questions undeserving of their own threads, and who doesn't feel like being that person who enters helper chat every 30 minutes whenever curiosity takes hold.

Basically, I guess just use common sense as to what you should probably only learn IG before asking? Yes, let's do that.

If this sort of thread is unacceptable, feel free to say as much and I will edit it into oblivion until the forum mods can deal with it!

I'll start: When wearing two belts (one in the belt location, one on the waist location), is it possible to wear things on the second belt? Ie. If you could "wear pouch on belt", could you also "wear pouch on 2.belt"?

"on belt" is an actual wear location, and not wearing something I said belt, I believe.

So wearing two belts would not provide two extra slots of the "on belt" location?

Nope. You can wear something in the "belt" location and something in the "waist" location; wearing something in the "belt" location provides you two "on belt" slots.

Wearing something in the waist location doesn't provide you with any extra "hangspace", as it were.

Well darn.
There goes "Operation 20,000 Swords" D:

You can always get two belts that are also containers and can be worn on both locations, and fill them with knives.

Think about how believable or non-believable your character's attire might be, given the environment. Also keep in mind your encumbrance. It -does- have a coded effect on your movement, AND on combat. Also, remember that the more "weapon container objects" you have, the higher the risk of you becoming confused during major screen-scroll combat while trying to get the "right" weapon from the "right" container.

Consider the types of weapons you're trying to contain, as well. Just because a cutlass codedly fits *in* a pouched belt, doesn't mean it should actually go there, or that it's believable that it *would* fit. However, a half dozen throwing daggers probably would fit just fine in that same belt. On the other hand, there are knife-belts designed specifically for the purpose (via the *load* command). You'd have to find those IC, but "load" is the customary syntax.

With the exception of the load/draw system with certain belt/sheath items, the only way you can "draw" a weapon to wield or hold it automatically, is if it is sheathed *on* a belt item, or a bow sheathed *on* your back. If you have a weapon in a pouch, you have to take it out, and then wield/hold it. If it's hanging off your belt or on your back, then "draw dagger" or "draw bow back" is all you need, and the wielding/holding is part of the draw code. The same with arrows in quivers: you can "get arrow quiver; wield arrow" or you can simply "pull quiver." Both result in the same thing, but the "pull" command simplifies it for you.

As you can see, it's a lot of little details, none of which are game-breaking or omgwtf important stuff. But they're very useful. And they're the kind of things you learn as you progress in your gaming in Arm; eventually it becomes automatic and you don't even think about it anymore.

Ok, so two questions:

Is it possible to make combat more brief? Is there a command to make it so that you don't get as many messages when fighting, if not all those messages pertain directly to you?

Aaand...
If it says that you "lunge" at someone, or some such...what is that? Is it a crit?

A1: brief combat is the command you're looking for. Try help brief for more information.

A2: I'm pretty sure that's the message you get when their armor deflects your blow (as opposed to their parry or dodge).

Armor can deftly deflect or absorb blows. It has separate messages when this happens.

Thanks!

Ok, another question: Does bank balance persist between cities?
Ie: Say I deposit 100,000,000 sid in Tuluk's bank, and then I travel to Allanak. Can I then withdraw it there?

Yes but not all civilized places have banks.

Do a training dummys increase my skills if I attack it? Or do I need to submit logs to apply for a skill change?

I miss Tuluk....

The coded benefit of sparring with dummies is negligible, if anything.

You can submit logs to apply for a skill change, but you should spar with and/or learn from PCs instead.

In this case, I will...mostly...agree with Marauder Moe...but also ask that you try and discover this in-game.

With appropriate roleplay of course.

I'll keep that in mind, then.

When I was stuck in a low-pop area of a certain clan, I actually bumped a skill over from apprentice to journeyman during a sparring session with a dummy, so it's theoretically possible to do so by using the dummy exclusively.

However, given the way the system works, the time required would probably be on the order of several hundred times longer than ordinary training.

If you are completely inept (read: novice) at a skill, you might be able to get it to apprentice in a not entirely unreasonable amount of time by using the dummy.  Anything beyond that, and you're way into the no-man's land of diminishing returns.

Anyone ever notice sometimes when someone emotes to you it says you's instead of your? i.e., "The freckled Abercrombie and Fitch Door Greeter smiles and reaches to shake you's hand."

Just curious, what's being typed in these situations?

That's an emote from someone who isn't used to the armageddon emoting system (and may be coming from SOI, which, I believe, translates apostrophe & s into 'yours' when seen from the target's point of view, i.e., you type "emote shakes ~target's hand", it shows the target, "The guy shakes your hand".).

What they're typing is:

>emote smiles and shakes ~target's hand.

What they should be typing is:

>emote smiles and shakes %target hand.

See help emoting for a better explanation.

edit: link fix

If you deposit money the bank it persists between cities.   8)

However, if you deposit 100,000,000 in the bank, you will not make it to the other city. You will be in staff-land, discussing the details of the bug you have been exploiting.   :o

1. Do we have some charts on the GDB comparing weapons?

2. Skill Offensive, Skill Defensive. Huh? I have such skills?

1. No, weapon comparisons are intended to be made in-game, for those characters who wish to make them.

2. Yes, but they won't show up in your "skills" list. They're one of the "invisible modifiers" that get added to the combat formula.

If you 'point labyrinth' does that count as pointing Allanak for the purposes of newbie loot shops?
