Difficult Pickin's

Twink - I mean - Skill-related question:  Would a character who rp's "studying" difficult locking mechanism (using the coded pick skill) increase his picking skill?  The helpfile states that many locks will be beyond a character's abilities - impossible for him/her to pick. I'm wondering if trying and failing to pick these locks benefits one's picking skill.  Or can one only really learn from locks that he/she can currently pick?  :?:
