The secret to character longevity.

Started by morrigan, May 07, 2008, 11:59:25 PM

So..I've had several characters that I -really- -really- liked and cared about, they invariable get killed, despite my best efforts. So, I make a throwaway character to transition from a concept I really liked and was just getting into that died, and go around making a general nuisance of myself, getting into stupid situations that -should- result in my death....and he's still alive. He's gonna end up living forever....except now that I've said this..he'll slip in inix dung and break his neck on a flat surface.

I've discovered that it's always the "throwaway" characters that are the most fun and long-living for me.  I'd say it's distressing, except it's not, really, and it usually leads to my longer-lived characters being character types I wouldn't otherwise play.

All of my throwaway characters end up living for months and months and months.
"You will have useful work: the destruction of evil men. What work could be more useful? This is Beyond; you will find that your work is never done -- So therefore you may never know a life of peace."

I just made a throw away toon to get used to playing the game again expecting to die, he gets settled in, I think he's set, get a few days played on him and Boom dead. depressing sometimes.

Make sure the words in your sdesc and any keywords are difficult to type. Like Xygax or Myrdryn or the statuesque azure-wrinkled dwarf.

The harder to type, the less likely someone will actually hit you before you have a chance to run away!

Just a tip for people who use zMUD/CMUD.  A feature I never knew about but figured out recently is for goofy sdesc with words that suck to type out is you can just use TAB completion.

Example:  Instead of typing statuesque... type stat<TAB> (that's type the first four and hit the TAB) and it will write out the rest for you!

It's true!  My characters are always most fun when walking the fine line between painful death and tenuous survival.

This is me, totally. I find that concepts I spit out into the application form on a whim end up living for absolutely freaking ever. And then I'll spend days planning out a character and once they're made, their stats suck and they start out with next-to-no obsidians, and then I die from a freak accident.

Yeah. Why is it throwaways -always- get the best stats and your well-planned uber char of doom is always poor, poor, poor, below average. Then you reroll and get poor, poor, poor, poor.

I once made a throwaway ranger while I waited on a special app tribal-type ranger.  The throwaway started with shitty stats, but when I rerolled, he ended up with good strength and extremely good everything else.  I was stunned and laughed a lot and enjoyed being way more powerful than I should.  Then the special app came through, so I reluctantly retired the throwaway.  My special app ended up with average or below average everything and the reroll changed one of his averages to below average.

You're doing it wrong.

If my character is not constantly in danger, or getting himself into it, I find myself bored as well.

I once made a throw away, he ended up becoming my strongest character ever and lasted for more than a year.  He survived all sorts of shit that would have probably fried every single one of my other characters then in the end I lost him in the most idiotic way... hehe... Now that I think about it though... My strong characters tend to survive the would be cool deaths and die to the idiotic ones... it's a curse.

I'm probably giving away a -HUGE- secret only known to staffers but...

For some reason whenever a PC gets some kind of modification, be it a description change or a skill change or something that requires a modification to a PC.  Whenever this happens (and maybe I'm just seeing something that isn't there) it always seems that these characters have a higher mortality rate than others.

Now be warned.  I you do get some kind of description change or something similar, -be careful- because ginka probably wants to eat your PC.  However if you can live for a few rl weeks afterwards, you'll probably be able to avoid the curse and will be ok.  But just be careful!

That brings up an interesting thought... tracking character mortality curves. Breaking the data down by class, karma, race, gender and such. I wonder what patterns would become apparent?
