Is there a way to see if you can craft a certain material in a shop into something without buying it?
You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?

To my knowledge there is not, it's one of those things that supposedly merchants don't let people see what they are buying. At least not handle with a closer look.

And one more question, to use the tools do you have to hold them or just have them in your inventory?

To my knowledge (and there isn't much of it trust me) you should be
holding the tool

Correction, and I know it's nitpicking, but a more accurate way to say it is:
