Spice Alternative

Cutting spice is a totally sweet idea and I would love to see something in the general spirit of that suggestion, if not the same mechanic.

Well, in my case it would be twenty pinches of root and one of spice.  Chances are he's got more sid on him than he's gonna spend on his hit of spice.

'Why don't you stay at my place while you smoke, man.  I can watch out for the militia for ya, eh?'

And then come back a few IC hours later to find them dead on the floor.

I find it very surprising to hear the complaints about how expensive spice is when a cup of water or ale in a tavern can be half the cost of an entire gallon.  I don't recall hearing anyone complain about it.

But consider the following:  If spice prices are high at NPC sellers then this gives an opportunity for indie spice hunters to sift and sell for comparable prices for a fairly decent profit.  There is a lot of risk with sifting, but organizing a spice hunting crew and dealing with the associated dangers would be a very good opportunity for fun and good roleplay.

Make the game a little more complex then.  So, silt acts as a convincing but utterly ineffective filler.  Root acts to make the user feel like he has taken more spice then he has.  Now throw in that as you start to dilute the spice it starts to smell and look less like spice.  If you cut your spice very poorly, say 20 roots as  you suggest, then give a very high chance that when the user puts the spice to their nose they detect something is very wrong and don't sniff.

As far as Sephiroto's point:

You miss my point Sephiroto.  The point isn't that you can't score spice easily and sell it off at a profit.  You CAN indeed do this, and do it fairly easily.  There have been some very successful spice dealers and organizations in the history of the game that have been completely player run.  The issue isn't making money.

The issue is that if you want to sell to non-rich organizations/people, you are SOL.  I do not believe that the point of spice is that it is a luxury that only the rich can afford.  The 'rinth is supposed to be awash with spice addicts.  As it stands, selling to 'rinthers and even commoners is just a quick way to go hungry and down right silly compared to alternative forms of 'rinth money making.  Add in a little spice cutting mini game, and not only is it more fun to be a dealer, but it is much easier to be an addict on a budget.  Kuraci and nobles can still go have their merry spice parties and go swimming in pools of water, but the rest of the population can now also indulge in their own lesser way.

I hade a character that had a pair of shoes (sometimes) with pants and -never- had more then 50 'sid, and he managed to keep drugged up to ignore his shitty life. There are other things to smoke beside spice, some of you (like a year or two back) may even remember a pc of mine chilling in the gaj uising this other non-illegal drug. He also managed with a job to stay spiced up pretty much forever. I could steal and sell a dagger and have enough spice for a RL week.  Just like real life it is a matter of finding a good source.

A RL example would be the clubs in California where you can buy weed legally for outragous prices, or you can make friends with the guy that grows for them and get ounces of discoball looking bud for 150
