What if we were PG13?

How would you feel if for some reason the staff decided that from now on the game would be PG13?  That is to say, no mature content allowed, consented or not.
ur fires are bright
but the sky's fire is night

I know exactly how I'd feel, I'd feel that there are 1700 other Diku muds out there for people interested in playing a happy bunny hugging giggle fest.
A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic.  Zalanthas is Armageddon.

Armageddon

Rated R for violence, adult situations, adult language, nudity
Quote from: AnaelYou know what I love about the word panic?  In Czech, it's the word for "male virgin".

I'd just stop playing.  The reason this game rocks is that it doesn't sugar coat anything.

Sex, Drugs, and unceasing Violence, baby. That's why I play Armageddon.

I can get in bunny petting, tree hugging, sheep-shagging time at SmurfMUD.
We were somewhere near the Shield Wall, on the edge of the Red Desert, when the drugs began to take hold...

There's no plans to do anything like this.  Myself, I'd hate to see it happen.

What would be the point of having a harsh world without allowing mature content? That'd suck all the fun right out of the game.

Spice addictions, torture, brutal arena matches hardcore evil conspiracies, violence (and yes, sex).... all of those would have to be toned down/eliminated if you wanted to make the game PG-13.

It would just SUCK to see:
The happy bunny hugger with rainbow hair says, out of character: "Guys, this roleplay is getting too mature, we have to stop."

Would we change the name of the game to "Utopia" as well?

Personally, I wouldn't like to see this happen.  However, it annoys me that people feel they can't have passion if things 'fade to black' more often.  The fact is that being truly creative means that people don't need role-played violence, sex, and a huge amount of profanity to have a very adult-themed game.

<this space for rent>

I think it would take away the realism of the game hardcore, people don't sugarcoat anything in real life. Definately a very pissed off on my vote.
A staff member sends you:
"Normally we don't see a <redacted> walk into a room full of <redacted> and start indiscriminately killing."

You send to staff:
"Welcome to Armageddon."

Personally, I don't think any worthy sense of drama can be attained without these things.

Just the very idea of doing this got me so pissed off I stared a slew of violence and torture.
A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic.  Zalanthas is Armageddon.

You know, I voted that I'd be kind of pissed off, but then I realized that there are no half-measures with me.  It's psychotically enraged or nothing.

But anyway, I think that it would be a step in the wrong direction of catering to an adult playerbase, and while it wouldn't have much of an effect most of the time, I think some of the best scenes in the game would be vetoed before they could ever happen.  And no, I'm not talking about mudsex.

Why do you ask?
Back from a long retirement

If it were decided that this game be PG13, I would stop observing the rule of consent, for one, and generally up my level of profanity, vulgarity, violence, brutality, etc.

My reaction was initially the same as EvilRoeSlade's. At first I thought, "eh, if the Imms told us not to swear anymore, I'd be a little pissed off, but I'd get over it". I soon realized, however, that if the bloodshed, rape, torture, murder and sadism dissappeared from Armageddon, so would the political backstabbing, treachery, distrust, greed and gluttony. And then what would be left?
I'll tell you what. The city-state of Tuluk.
Okay, I'm kidding. But Armageddon is a very R-rated game, and it simply wouldn't be feasible to make it PG-13 without completely altering the concept of it. I mean, come on, in order to play a mul, you need to understand the concept of reproduction, from the gruntin' and grindin' to paternal love. My point is that sex, murder, and all that good stuff is very deeply etched into the history, gameworld, and general "feel" of the game. And to change that now would leave us with... what? A lot of, "Hey there, my long-necked friend! Let's go kill some scrab, shall we? But no bloody EMOTEs, it gives me the shivers!"

And then the staff would get sued for one of my PC's calling someone else a bitch. Or, hell, killing them.
Death is an automatic NR-17

And then if you Fade every mature scene to black. Like sex, you cna't have the passiona fter, it just doesn't happen, unless I am the one you fade to black on.

Arm is evil.  And I love it.  It's like the softest, cuddliest, happy smelling teddy bear in the world, except it is stuffed with meth needles that inject you everytime

Would this situation fall into the "Right to bear arms against a tyranical government" catagory?

I believe it would. We could call it... C.A.P.A.C.

Personally, I think its good the way it is. We have this wonderful consent rule, and I wouldnt want to play the game with children anyway. However, without a consent rule, I'd be totally gone. I dont think I ever want to observe a torture or rape scene. I'd get up from my chair and get me a cup of tea.

I work for Amnesty International. It is at times sickening how much REAL torture, pain, mass rape, and bestialic child murder I get to hear / read about. I'll spare you the details in the spirit of good taste. But I can tell you that the real world, the one we live in, is a sad sad place.

After reading the email of someone who sent Amnesty International the details of how he got tortured for stating his political opinion in China, I really dont want to 'play' torture in a game, TYVM.

I have never played here, yet, but I will probably be an active voice on this forum once i've got a character and a feel for the game, since this looks like a great RPI.. so I figured i'd post something.

I definitely don't think making any RPI PG-13 is a good idea.. it obviously limits what your characters can do, and thats never a good thing.. it oppresses them :P.

Consent is definitely a must.. I know if one of my characters was ever in a situation that would induce some sexual moments (sex being something that I think is necessary for most human beings), I would definitely want the scene to fade to black.. and then I can see how some people would be offended by torture scenes, as someone else has stated before me..

just the thoughts of a talkative newbie that's bored out of his mind waiting for an application response :P

PG13?  Fuck that.
Yes. Read the thread if you want, or skip to page 7 and be dismissive.

Stop being shitty to each other.

Every MUD that's not Arm is a smurf MUD.
Harmony sucks.
Quote from: Vesperas...You have to ask yourself... do you love your PC more than you love its contribution to the game?

I do not want to see BloodNinja kind in ARM.
A man who carries a cat by the tail learns something he can learn in no other way. -MT

I'm quoting that. Beautifully said, Larrath.

I don't know if there was ever an all-out smurf-themed mud, but I do know that alot of 'stock' muds carry the same generic smurf village for mindlessly killing 'mobs'. It may be a premade area, or som such shit... *trails off and shakes his head in confusion*

Mud slang, I guess. A nice happy place would be SmurfMUD. Needless to say, this isn't it. We're rated R.

=WP
We were somewhere near the Shield Wall, on the edge of the Red Desert, when the drugs began to take hold...

I think the chinese prisoner in my example above would disagree that 'harmony sucks'. I realize you probably meant something different, but I'm just mentioning it as food for thought.

If all of us went through what millions of RL people endure every day, we'd happily play Smurfmud. And the only ones playing out detailed torture scenes in games would be VNPCs.

No, it would take away all the grit that we love so much.

I don't think that's true.

The truth is that if Armageddon became a perfectly harmonic place where everyone are friends, every single character would become disgustingly powerful.
Think about how much easier hunting with your ranger is going to be when there's a maxed magicker of some kind that's giving you positive spells.

If you put together three maxed magickers and a couple of maxed warriors, rangers and a burglar, I doubt there's going to be very much that could possibly stand in your way for long.  The whole MUD will become based on dungeon crawls and mantis invasions.
A friendly, all-cooperative Arm will be pretty crappy.  The code is awesome and the mechanics are great, but it just won't work.

Since we are all psychos loving the life in a harsh world..

......  I guess it suits psycho's like us better, to keep it the way it already is.
some of my posts are serious stuff

Heheh, it would be funny to see what happened if a bunch of Arm players went to another mud like SmurfMUD and started playing as if it was Arm. I'm sure bannings would ensue, but it'd be kinda funny. (Not a serious idea.)

I tried that once.  It didn't go very well. :P
Quote from: Vesperas...You have to ask yourself... do you love your PC more than you love its contribution to the game?

I think what I meant to ask was "What if we were rated R, and no x-rated material was allowed?"  Basically, what I intended was, what if blatently pornographic or super graphic violence wasn't allowed, but all your regular violence, sexuality, and shit talking remained as it usually is.  Not going to start a new poll for that... but do people think they'd react to that change the same way?

If Arm was made so that everything that would normally require consent (except actions indicative of rape, such as leaping on someone from behind) were always faded, I wouldn't really care.

I don't really mudsex all that much or even care too much about it.  I also trust myself and my fellow mudders to be able to imagine what "emote carves %guy finger off with a bone knife" would feel like without having to describe just how painful and bloody that would be.
