Rangers had kick and disarm.

There wasn't an account system, instead to keep track of Karma and such when you created a new character you typed in the name of your previous character.

Kanks were awesome!

Hot damn.

Just wondering, because my first ranger was in the Wyverns, and I remember oocing to ask, 'How do I get kick?'  And the guy responded 'Just use it a lot, or get it from bash'.

So I was a ranger who was using bash all the time just hoping kicking would show up in my skills list.  And I always thought it was a cruel joke where he was just laughing every time I fell down in combat.

My first character was in Tuluk.

My first character was from the Northlands, back when it was just a collection of spread out buildings (the Reynolte vineyard/estate, the Sun King's Sanctuary, and Friel's Rest, the ruins of Old Tuluk, etc).

I also miss the observatory that was along the road, just north and west of the Renyolte Vineyard (where the Dasari estate is now). The observatory was just a cool little mystery having some story that'd been long lost with time.

Back when I started, clay grebbing in Tuluk was what you did to wait for a real (1%) job, and was actually not capable of supporting a lifestyle that wanted anything besides food and water.

Back when I started, well, it wasn't such a terribly long time ago. Kryl were not around, and Morin's was some junky one-bit place to buy a cup of water and rest mid-hunt. Without the kryl, the woods felt like an interesting, almost peaceful place if you were on the edge, serene and stunning. Now its a place of utmost terror because kryl. Also no limits of sorcerers and mindbenders, woo. Wonder why they did that eventually.

The North was rebelling against Allanak.

No one told you to think about all the cool shit you could do INSTEAD of murder. In fact, you COULD murder people. Like ALL the time.

There were gypsies!

There were Nenyuks!
And ONE of those Nenyuk PCs had a KRATHI guard.

You couldn't see how good you were at skills.

Kanks were awesome!
They were. Honey-kanks were awesome-er. One of my characters had one.

I think back when I started HGs could be sorcerors.

There was some sort of War over Copper or something, and my newbie Lumberjack was helping secure wood for spike pits and other mechanical traps for those damn Nakkis.

I couldn't see my skills.

*The primary source of newbie coin was luring pre-stink gith to the gates so the guards could kill them for you. Their gear was worth the same as normal gear at this time.

*Anyone could play anything, which meant there were nearly weekly sorceror hunts.

*There were no crafting skills. You made coins by trading from one place to the other. Or see above.

*All elves were the same race.

There were these really tall thin figures wearing white hooded robes that would come to the Gaj and be spooky. Most people were afraid of them. They didn't usually talk. They just "be'ed spooky."

I got hired by a templar in Allanak and found out a few RL days later that there was a HUGE explosion in the north city that took out half the quarter.  I learned via IM from the person who told me about the game, that she was hanging out in Freil's Rest, which was more like an outpost at that point, and only adjacent to the city, not part of it. Or something like that. She made it sound very rustic, primitive and outdoorsy. If I'm understanding this right, this was when the crater showed up in Old Tuluk. This first character lived through all that, but never learned about it and I was too new to understand what was going on. So I never learned exactly what it was, I can really only just take an educated guess.

This same character was inducted into the Guild and then got hired (while still in the Guild) by a noble house, once the templar stored/got killed (I don't remember which). She was assassinated by her guild boss, he was contracted to kill her by some other influential person. I don't think I ever learned the actual reason for that.

There was an influx of anime characters.

There were Nenyuks!

I remember when the new elf running code was, briefly, given to all elves.  My character felt superior to all those poor fecks that had to ride.  Like an elf should.

I also remember the evolution of crafting, and subguilds, still feels a bit new fangled to me.

Saturday Downtime.

Saturday downtimes SUCKED and we all played up until 2 seconds before we got kicked out and lost whatever cool shit we were just working on.

Back when I started playing the Rinth was a bustling marketplace, NPC's wore metal jewelry, the shore of silt sea WAS the edge of the world, there were civilizations East and West of Allanak, and the obsidian coin was worth more Dagnabbit!  you used to be able to get a mug of ale off Vennant for 6 sids!  Now its 11!  Krath damn inflation!

Weren't there explosives back then?

You used to be able to cram explosives into a backpack, trap the pack, trap it again with a fuse, and toss it somewhere.  You used to be able to rig explosives on doors.

It was a fantastic option for people who didn't want to twink out combat skills and being an indirect aggressor.

Back when I started playing Tuluk was closed and kanks were the mount of choice.

Saturday Downtime.
Oh yeah. Back when I started playing Americans and Canadians would complain about the game going down every Saturday. Was always up on Saturday for me though. And by the time I woke up on Sunday it was up then as well.

And the only way to get an apartment was through a Nenyuki PC agent.
Back when I started playing the coolest Drovian around had her own freestanding house and was a hero from the war with Tuluk. She went on to help with the firekanks and was (AFAIK) the first PC to ever communicate with one.

The ancient and terrible Hole North of Allanak did not have warning signs preventing accidental falling-in.

This was fixed after a Byn contract in which MANY people got screwed over in a very deathy way, several of them important, long-lived, or important and long-lived. I remember being a drovian at the time, and as I never really ever level up my spells the useful guys (they were both girls) were doing drovy stuff and I remember cracking a joke about people falling in--- and was immediately told that that was what indeed had happened. One giant had managed to grab a ledge and climb down to check the sarges, who I think had both died. One did, I am sure.

There was no 'stop' command. God I remember combat stacking up and lagging until it finally flooded through and, after 45 seconds of scroll, you got to find out if you survived or not.

Oh the nostalgia...

Back when I started circa '04, the mantis were invading some distant place called Luir's, and then my home town Tuluk. Of course I was waaaaay too nervous to travel outside alone (as a ranger lol) so I saw most of these events under the safety of House Salarr. One of my first memories was when two ancient God Kings had some kind of mental battle in the skies just outside the city gates, and all Tulukis were brought to their knees as they psionically observed this epic battle.

There were no accounts; your email address was the only thing linking one character to the last.  During chargen, you were incentivized with skill boosts to use a consistent email.

You couldn't see your skill levels, there were no subguilds, and you had to wish up for a reroll.

Opening closed doors in the labyrinth was a good way to explode yourself.

There was no losing direction due to weather.  But the rooms around Red Storm had a procedure that would spin you around, at least unless you were guild_ranger.

City elves had a base of something like 170 stamina; desert elves had a base of something like 350 stamina.

There was no crafting, but I saw a skilled ranger skin a scrab and get a shield from it.

The T'zai Byn was closed, but on dark nights you could walk past its guards and look around.

House Reynolte was open.  The clan stablehand was a hybrid human-mantis.

Rangers had kick and disarm.

I fucking knew it!

I remember being a newbie and playing around with a vet ranger well over a decade ago now(right around when luirs became ruins mostly), and i remember he could poison, throw, create cures, tame animals. And he could also disarm gith. He was a fucking beast and so well RPed that to this day I can still picture this character so clearly.

Two years later(after a break),I mentioned rangers and disarm as part of an argument and one doorknob scoffed at my argument due to disarm. By then disarm had been quietly removed and more likely than not most people had no clue rangers had that ability.

I feel vindicated after all these years.  :'(

I don't remember if other mounts did, but I definitely remember sunbacks had a tail attack. War beetles might've? I think if you look at their description it might hint at them being able to use their tails in combat. Don't ask me what the command was, I've played the game off and on for a lot of years. But I remember it being something like "Pull reins" or pull something and your sunback would take a swipe at whatever you were fighting with it's tail.

It was pretty cool.

Luirs was just a tiny little outpost with no outer bailey. You rode in the north gates and straight through town and out the south gates. The stables were right next to the tavern, and the market yard was inside the currently Kurac-only area. The area where the current market yard is was virtual IIRC.

It had a real "gothic wild west" vibe that I kinda miss.

There were a couple of little villages west of Allanak.
There were also mantis living west and south of Allanak.
Sometimes gith would lurk around the north side of Allanak and this is when your bone longsword came in handy.
Luirs was VERY tiny.
Some of us lived in the canyons east of the waterless lands, where we used a rope and pulley contraption to get us up into our cave homes.
Kanks were the preferred ride.
Sometimes if you got locked out of red storm on the south side, silt horrors would find you.

"Leave" was not listed with the exits next to the room title. My first character died because I entered something, could not figure out how to leave again, and I got tired of that after an hour or so of trying. I ended up typing "kill", hoping I would be able to flee out. I think "Leave" appeared in the lists a few months or so after that.

Since I feel like this thread is the passive aggressive complaint thread, I counter with:

When I started playing

- Whirans could effectively instagib any PC in the game and you couldn't really do anything about it. If they wanted you dead, it was going to happen, RP be damned.

- Your warrior PC couldn't quit out in the wild when your kid starts crying.

- You couldn't play PC slaves.

- If you weren't a noble or a GMH family member, you had a zero percent chance of ever learning to read and write.

- You couldn't app for skill bumps.

- If you spec apped anything more outlandish than an extra toe, your app had a zero percent chance of acceptance.

- You would have been laughed at if you'd said "can we do playable gith?"
All the world will be your enemy. When they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, Prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed.

Before this, there was a (fairly brief) time when everyone could read and write. But books would lose their content after a reboot if stored in a container.

There was real gicker's around and you could play real 'gicks.  And it was always a meta-game to see how much Karma you can accumulate so you could play said cool classes.

Then they removed them, with me missing a chance to try a great number of them.

Oh and I was around for that end of the world madness a bit.  Got murderized a lot by all kinds of weird shit.  Which motivated me to keep trying at the game for a little while.

Now game's actually a bit more boring now.

Contact wasn't at a high enough level for you to contact ANYONE, and you could had to practice riding in the city because no matter what class you were your ride was LOW.

Also, you didn't know what level your skills were at until you suddenly branched.

Also, you didn't know what level your skills were at until you suddenly branched.

Or kept a spreadsheet of all your skills, how many failures you got in a pre-conceived time span, and tracked your progress that way.
The one time a magicker branched a spell at like 9 fails? I got super excited. All the others took sooooooo many more. I swear it was a fluke.

Back when I started, there were wars over resources like the Copper mine. Soh elves would wander up to Tuluk to challenge the Legendary Martial Fighters of the Jihaen Order. We had High Templars, and the PC Legionnaires were basically High Templar Elithan's personal guard. Allanak was difficult to survive in, and some clans didn't even offer free water, just food!

Muk Utep was asleep. Undertuluk existed as a rebellion, of sorts, against the oppressive government and seemed an awful lot, to me, like the subterraneans in Demolition man. Kryl were a dangerous exotic beast from far past the thornlands, and if you left Tuluk during Halfling lunch-time, Kust would try and paralyze you and eat you for later. One of my PCs actually got paralyzed by resisted quickly and ran away.
Masks are the Armageddon equivalent of Ed Hardy shirts.

I remember when stun points were implemented. It was during a time I wasnít playing, so when I came back I was sitting in Traderís with my noble trying to see who was still alive when I came back. I knew about them, but I didnít bother setting up my prompt.

Passed right out in the tavern. I thought someone backstabbed me at first, because things like that used to happen in Traders. Then it came to me, losing stun must knock you out. Duh! So I set up my prompt while I was knocked out.

It's the feeling of personal (player, not character) accomplishment. Yes our characters all want this that and the other thing and it'd be nice if our players didn't have to work so hard to figure out the hows and whys of it all.

But if the players didn't have to work so hard, then the players would have all that sense of accomplishment reduced or even eliminated. It's that two-punch combo that makes Arm work for so many of us.

I think this is describing the reaction when the defense 'nerf' hit. Good times. People were so angry that they couldn't go out and solo gith after a couple of days.  :P

Maybe some people have stated some of this stuff but here it is again:
  • two-handed skill sucked(it was so underpowed that no one used it, so not sure what bonuses, if any, it had)
  • shield use skill sucked (you just got a bit extra armor bonus when hit if it activated, i think.)
  • mounted combat did not exist. Everyone dismounted to fight. To flee you, ran, then ran back and got on your mount before riding off
  • pull reigns/charge were broken/missing for the longest time until we got current skills
  • Stealth was crap, you couldn't even sneak up on animals
  • Poison was also broken on weapons at some point. Poison with throw didn't work.
  • Mages had no 'teeth' unless you spent 40 RL days in a remote cave.
  • Direction sense was not a skill, only rangers had this ability

Many of the basic aspects of the game we take for granted now were terrible, broken or didn't even exist, at least when i first start playing.

Before the current mage subguilds a lot of mages would begin play spamcasting for all their worth because they thought they had to in order to be able to do anything (I was called out for it once, and later told that it was alright to play a mage like that) and after that I didn't play like that--- and therefore did not use magick very much at all, and certainly not anything dangerous.

One time I met a man who was three days old and could (redacted.) I thought to myself, "God, this guy must need to eat and sleep bad." It was one of those second or third-tier spells, and was only really useful if you didn't understand what it did.

Thinking about magick, I kind of want to play a witch now. They are vastly improved, I think, although I wouldn't have considered them broken before--- just very hard to balance between the work you need to do with them and doing everything else.

When I started on my first couple of witches, the water temple was beautiful. I'd heard from someone that (clan) had paid for the gorgeous sculptures and everything and I believed it. Now its, you know, a hole, pretty much the way you'd think it'd be. I honestly wonder whether or not the fire in the quarter was started out of an OOC desire to revamp the 'niceness' of some of the temples back into a more expectable normalcy. I think that was one of the reasons.

My first cool death was to a staff-controlled Halfling who cut my stomach horizontally and spilled my colorful guts out onto the forest floor. It was awesome. It was right next to the Tuluk gates. Help was a few yards away.

Aggressive NPCs didn't rush in or pursue at one time. It was common to go out, attack one, flee, rest until healed, then go back in to finish the job (the NPCs didn't heal over time).

Then they switched on the pursuit. I think it was about half the player base that lost a character within 24 hours.

These are more recent but I think they've changed the game the most:

There was no reel lock (I've died to it but I love the reel code).

Agility was king.  Blackwing came to town and their warrior killed the Gaj in the arena wearing only neck protection.

No crafting meant you either found employment, scavenged in the dessert, or travelled from settlement to settlement armed with your haggle skill.  As a result, the free food in the T'zai Byn - when it reopened - was a huge selling point.

There were no apartments.

Soldiers didn't experience any lag between when they entered a room and when they tried to subdue you.  Likewise there was no 'nosave arrest' or 'nosave subdue'.

The labyrinth's east-west division wasn't clear cut.

Muls were not peak karma (I think) and they were kind of just everywhere.

Merchant houses had hunters!

The gemmed had a council!

The senate was actually a thing that happened IG! (I think I went to one of the last meetings of it.)

There were way more metal items floating around.

Crazy magick shit(TM) happened everywhere!

Staffers actually had avatars/characters in clans that came out and did shit with the clan all the time! You could literally way them anytime and ask dumb stuff. (Some I never realized weren't players until much much later.)

Kank honey was a thing, I think.

The north and south lackeys had awkward staredowns in Luir's all the time!

People use to spar with bags filled with rocks! (Man we use to spar anywhere. I once sparred on a roof and out in the dunes. RIP.)

We'd have characters ride off to find Steinal all the time.

Hunt so much food you didn't have anywhere to store it and start junking flanks of meat!

BRACERS THAT GAVE YOU AN EXTRA ATTACK IF YOU WORE THEM! (Anyone remember those!?)
Modern concepts of fair trials and justice are simply nonexistent in Zalanthas. If you are accused, you are guilty until someone important decides you might be useful. It doesn't really matter if you did it or not.

Ooooh, I have recipes with Kank honey written down somewhere!

We need a substitute for kank honey or make those recipes useable with marilla.

I remember the Byn got closed down because all the players did was spar. I was right there when staff snatched the two leaders off the grid.

Those bracers said something like ďThe buff muscular man smirks....Ē something something... pretty cheesy.
