Board etiquette surrounding random threads
« on: February 10, 2016, 06:45:17 PM »
I had some thoughts about the topic of coherent discussions in random threads.  I think we should either designate it as a matter of board etiquette who is responsible to spin off a new thread (I'd say third post on same topic.  Making the second person do it discourages conversation, by the fourth+, no one can be bothered to count what post number they are). Or, I think maybe we should just say it is the duty of the helpers/mods to do it (though others could certainly self-police to help out). With no clear outline of whose job it is, it just leads to no one doing it, or not knowing if it should have been done already, and then people get tetchy with each other.  Thoughts?

You know I think if James simply retitled his thread "Cheese" and apologized for his first post being off-topic, all problems would be solved.

I've always liked cheese.  One of my first characters bought cheese.

You really think BadSkeelz understands the concept of Wine In Front of me? This guy shot me as a townie when he felt threatened. The man's a neandrathal.

Persona for GDB use only. Results in game may vary.

Huh.  About 80-90% of cheese in the U.S. is produced with GMO microbial rennin.  I can't decide whether that's weirder than traditional calf stomach rennet or not.

Ah yes.  I see my error.  Allow me to revise.

Any thoughts on the titular topic?

I don't really see why it's a big deal if a topic lingers in the random thoughts thread. But, sure. 3 posts sounds fine.

i think it would be fine either way.

topics have a habit of going away quickly enough. important ones to players become threads.

then those threads get locked when they run for eight pages and devolve into people acting like onions to each other.

onions covered in rotten milk, also known as cheese.

I always thought titular things of any sort were just heavy handed.

Titular lines in movies just piss me off.

Also, sure.  I nominate Synthesis to do it.  He has wonderful judgement and a quick mind.  I would totes get injured just so he could surger me.
Yes. Read the thread if you want, or skip to page 7 and be dismissive.

I like the three post idea. I don't like moderating any of the Random threads because it's so nebulous and vague as to how soon I should split something off.  Mostly if I see a discussion going on for more than a page I split it. Some understood etiquette of self moderation in the community would be nice.

back on topic, I really love grilled cheese sandwiches

The random threads are the only threads on the GDB that the "stay on topic" rule doesn't seem to apply to. The "topic" of these threads is that there is no topic. So when a random thread starts to get a topic, it puts staff/mods in the awkward position of having to make sure the thread doesn't have a topic.

In addition to that, and the fact that most reported posts are in those two threads - partly because most GDB posts are in those threads, and partly because it's easier to bury flaming/vaguebooking/other petty crap in those threads - it makes locking them, and letting people get used to making threads for things they want to discuss, look better for the GDB (and perhaps the player community as a whole) in the long run.

So be nice, have a piece of cheese and calm down before you post. Think if it needs to be in its own thread or if it should be posted at all.

It's also a lot easier to avoid topics you don't particularly care to read (people's views on American politics or whatever) when they aren't taking up 2+ pages in a supposedly random thread.  I'm a lot more likely to tell people to move it along if it's a topic that's likely to polarize people because those topics generally spawn longer posts, longer discussions, and not everyone cares to read about them.

Whether I split the topic off for people or just tell them to make a new topic depends entirely on whether I'm posting from my phone.  I need at least three windows to properly split a topic, and navigating multiple tabs on my phone sucks.
