There is no way that usage over time chart has even a passing familiarity with anything that has ever even been in the same room as practical accuracy.
You know I think if James simply retitled his thread "Cheese" and apologized for his first post being off-topic, all problems would be solved.

There is no way that usage over time chart has even a passing familiarity with anything that has ever even been in the same room as practical accuracy.

That depends on what your sample population is, and what you've defined as the general population you're attempting to describe.

If the sample population is "times word occurs in books indexed by Google" and your target population is "times word occurs in published books," it may be accurate.

If the sample population is same as above, but the target population is "times word is used by any person, anywhere," obviously it's going to be way off, because of the intertubes.

That would kinda be the definition of impractical accuracy for a chart titled "Use over time".

Then again, it also appears to end in 2010, so practicality would seem to be a secondary concern to...space filling?  Ennoblization?  Code practice?  Academic verisimilitude?

I do find it interesting that Google's page there seems to intimate that 'meme' is a word from the 1970s (probably from memetic theory?) but its been used since the 1800s.

I wonder if its just tracking "meme" out of context (likely), considering I call my grandmother my meme.

In light of the sudden obesity discussion hijacking the thread.

This brings new meaning to the name of the Whole Foods grocery chain.

The way the questions are phrased make the results skew left, in my opinion.  I'm more conservative than this, particularly in the diplomatic axis section.
