Next Week is Change Your LDesc Week!

Started by Suhuy, June 12, 2015, 05:36:45 AM

In the spirit of being descriptive with our characters, I, lowly player that I am, declare next week to be Change Your LDesc Week. You don't have to be flowery and poetic with the language to be descriptive (in fact, thankfully, the code won't allow for excessive wording with change ldesc). But a simple string of text indicating what your character is doing besides simply "is standing here" does wonders for the ambiance of the game. Is your character slouching, leaning against a wall, fidgeting, dressed in something that would stand out even from far away, are their arms folded, is there a weapon in their hand, or perhaps a plumed helmet decorates their head. Your fellow players want to know!

So help bring the game world alive by honoring Change Your LDesc Week next week! Or feel free to get a head start and begin now. I doubt anyone will complain if you do :)

Totally agreed we should all be using change ldesc more.

TIP 1:  Set an alias. Try 'cl' for 'change ldesc.' I also use 'cll' for a set ldesc string that I might be using frequently for a given period of time, such as when recovering from an injury.

TIP 2: When making characters try and go for brevity! Although 35 character sdescs are pretty cool looking sometimes, especially for those super flowery elves or tribals or what have you, if you can manage to think of one that fits into 20 or so characters, that gives you a whopping 15 more characters to put into an ldesc for the rest of that PCs life!

I like it.
Child, child, if you come to this doomed house, what is to save you?

A voice whispers, "Read the tales upon the walls."

Makes me wish you could target things in an ldesc, but I'm aware of the complications it would cause.

If I'm correct, setting an ldesc overrides any sitting/standing/etc indication, does it not? Makes it awkward to change ldesc while sitting on something, but you lose the (is sitting at <table>) and instead have to add that kind of indicator yourself, without using targeting. Which leaves very little room for an extra bit at the end about how your character's posture is, or what they're doing, etc.

I normally like this feature a lot in games, but never actually used it much here. I see very few others using it, either.

It doesn't work when you are sitting, standing, or resting "on" an object. The default description overrides your change.

Ldesc is for all those other situations where it's beneficial to show your position, status, or ongoing actions.

examples:

The tall, muscular man leans in a corner, playing a lute.

The tall, muscular man stands here, bloody and battered.

The tall, muscular man is seated in the scant shade of a stone wall.

The tall, muscular man sits cross-legged, begging from passerby.

The tall, muscular man sits here, sewing a frilly pink dress.

The tall, muscular man cowers in a corner of the jail cell.

Wait, what?  I'm moderately certain this isn't true.

But it's true though.

Damn, then I've wasted a lot of ldescs.

Pretty sure if you sit on something, then change your ldesc, your changed ldesc overrides the "sit" ldesc.

Nope, it doesn't. Many years ago it did. It doesn't ever since the change to table objects and implementation of silt skimmers.

That's why it seems like people never use them. They simply don't show up if they're already sit/stand/rest-ing on a table object.

They do, however, work when you're sitting on the floor.

Standing, sitting and resting is ok to change your ldesc

Standing, sitting, or resting at a table object is not ok to change your ldesc.  I mean you can do it, it just won't display to the rest of the room.

Bumping this. Let's make this week another Change Your LDesc Week!

Some tables you can only sit 'on' (they're codedly a sleeping mat).  You have to watch really closely to see if you found one of these tables.

I had a PC once in Tuluk, who was OBSESSED with always sitting in a nice chair (Sergeant in the Legions, liked to be fancy). To the point where he would bring it outside the Sanctuary, and just sit in his nice chair and people watch.

Sure, I changed my ldesc, but on MORE THAN ONE occasion, people told me I was sitting in the middle of the street. On a chair. In a main thoroughfare. No matter how much I changed my ldesc, it kept happening. Thats when I realized it was being overwritten.

Those were good times. More people would gather outside the bar, than inside.

Masks are the Armageddon equivalent of Ed Hardy shirts.

You -could- "arrange" the chair.

Just to the side of the Sanctuary door, a silk brocade chair supports the weight of an important commoner here.
The tressy-tressed important man is sitting in a silk brocade chair here.

Wow!  This is news to me.

You can cha ldesc sitting at a work table, but it's hard to shake off - you have to stand away from the table.
When you do a chl, does it echo to other PCs?
