Broke into a house in the burbs.  Had a basement, which turned out to be a grow-op full of pot.

10/10 would play again

From the Wiki:

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead (aka Cataclysm DDA or CataDDA) is an open source roguelike set in a post-apocalyptic and fictional New England.

Alright, so here's a breakdown:

Those three surrounding yellow # are solar panels, which you can cut off any nearby electric car or make yourself. You need at least mechanics 2 to take parts off a car, and a hacksaw and wrench, which can usually be found in a hardware store.

Box is a container that you can install onto your car. Requires a frame space that isn't taken up by a seat or an aisle.

Controls allow you to manipulate turning the recharger on and off. You need them to interact with any car. If a car is drivable you also use these to turn on headlights, the engine, steer, etc.

The battery is charged by the solar panels when the sun is out, and the battery itself charges the charging station.

To put items into the box, use D (case sensitive) while standing either on or near the box and pick the direction the box lays in and drop whatever item you've modded with a rechargeable battery back into it. Then, use ^ and pick the space that the controls lie in and activate the charger. The battery requires charge.

All this is a vehicle I built myself using the * menu and selecting start vehicle construction, using a frame that I cut off a random car.

Alternatively, you could just use a car alternator to charge your battery while an engine on the car runs off gasoline. You'd need to install an engine and gasoline tank and all that for that, though.

This is awesome, thanks MeT - now I just need to find myself a hardware store..

Btw, how did you get your stats so high?  Mutations?  I seem to have been having a hard time learning recipes from books - these are books that I can read easily with Int at 10 as well, is it just a low chance to learn these, or does it take a certain focus level maybe?

Day 9

Katta the Ugly Bride has had to leave the evac shelter taking what she could, as the zombear began to wander back towards her makeshift home from the forest.  She had to leave her wedding dress behind.   :'(

Here's some that I was looking at LC:

The Wiki is pretty good in general too:

http://www.wiki.cataclysmdda.com/index.php?title=How_to_survive_your_first_day:_Dynamic_Spawn_Mode
(I had a hard time starting with Static Spawn mode - Dynamic gives you a bit of a grace period before zombies and other things start spawning in.  Problem is that they will keep dynamically spawning (until the pool runs out), so easier shortterm, harder longterm is what people say)

I love this game, but I am extremely poor at it! My best game so far just got ended by a bear. ):

Question: Is there any easy solution for random landmines? They seem to ruin my games more than any zombie ever could.

As I understand it, a perception of 10 (unencumbered!) should allow you to see buried landmines 100% of the time (8-9 apparently most of the time?).  I made my current char with 10 and so far have seen a variety of traps, but haven't run across any landmines yet.. *crossing fingers*

Day 10

After leaving the evac shelter to get away from the zombie bear who I'm pretty sure didn't see me, I had bedded down in an abandoned home on the outskirts of town, when in my half-conscious sleep I thought I heard some crashing and banging outside the curtained window.  It wasn't enough to wake me - I've always needed my precious beauty sleep after all (oho, I'm so funny, so ironic.. I need something to keep me going through this craziness!)  But when my alarm clock did wake me, in my haze I remembered.  I thought I'd better check outside, so I cracked open the curtain.. only to see a zombie bear inside a van on the road?!  I freaked out for a sec, but it was turned the other way and didn't see me, so I closed the curtains and pressed my back against the wall, almost hyperventilating.  The sight of that huge zombie bear bounding across the road, glossy black, lifeless eyes staring death back at me was still burning fresh in my memory from just the other day.. did it track me down?!  Then the fear was washed away by a sudden anger.  My hands curled into fists own their own, leather gloves creasing.  As my face contorted I thought - they took my love away from me.  He was the only thing I ever wanted in this wretched life.  These zombies.. and ZOMBIE FRICKING BEARS.  Putting on my kevlar vest, I had come to a resolve - I was done running.  I was going to kill them.  I was going to kill them all.

I downloaded it and putzed around in it before I left for work. I wandered along a road and then no smoking sign things ate me. The End.

I started with firefighter. The Halligan bar and the turnout gear makes for great starting armor/weapons. Now I'm running around with a quarterstaff and longbow. It's day 17, and honestly I'm beginning to get bored with surviving. I kill a zombie bear every other day. Yes, I butcher the corpse to make sure it doesn't rise again. They just spawn all the time. I recently sewed up an entire set of leather armor with bone armor boots because I can. I've been playing it relatively safe because I don't want to die again, but the game has also become much more boring because of this.

Once you get survival going well, it's usually time to start building a home base or mobile base, or beginning to delve into the various Labs, Army Bases or Mines around the place.

That's what I like, anyway.

Bionic Assassin.  Day 1.  My initial shelter was some ways out of town and there was a military base nearby.  I did some scouting along the edges of the forest to the north of the place and managed to come across the down remains of some sort of vehicle (torn to scrap shreds) and multiple dead soldiers with plenty of armor, weapons and supplies.

Edit:  Which did me jack squat when 20 zombies jumped out of the nearby river and chased my ass down.

Edit: New game..seriously?  I take one step and the "Big J" jumps through a window and stomps my ass!

Day 11

Am I going crazy?  What got into me?  My left side is black and blue.. the plates in my vest saved me from the zombear's claws, but it was so strong it nearly knocked me off my feet.  Still, it's dead.  It's dead dead.  I can't believe these things just get back up after a while again - I have to chop them into bits to make sure they're really done.  This bottle of oxycodone I found has a label that says it's addictive.. I'm pretty tempted though.

..

I found a science lab, "Tezen Biologics" west of town.  I guess it was lucky that I'd ran across some poor dead Tezen scientists a few days back who had ID cards - got me inside.  But now I don't know how I feel about them.. were they responsible for all this?  There were some research journals they kept that I've been reading.  They were experimenting on animals, people.  Changing them, mutating them into terrible things.  Did something go wrong?  Did it get out and turn everyone into the walking dead?  What I don't get is how come I didn't turn into one?  Am I special somehow?  Or cursed to live alone in this nightmare?  Please please please, just let this all be some horrible, horrible nightmare.  I've never been religious.. but now I'm praying to you, God, Allah, Buddha, whoever.. whatever is out there.  Please just let me wake up, and let me get married tomorrow, and let me have my Frank back.  Please, I'm begging you.

Zombear's, man. In my current game, one of the best moments was when I got a semi truck fired up and then ran over a zombear at high speeds. It spun me out and I lost some pieces of my truck, but it was damn satisfying. I love that semi truck, it's practically a mobile base. My main goal with this character is to find or craft all the mechanic's tools I need so I can create some custom vehicles.

Survalist - now a master swordsman and bowman.

Trying to get my first aid and electronics up to safely install some CBM's i've found
Now you're looking for the secret. But you won’t find it because of course, you're not really looking. You don't really want to work it out. You want to be fooled.

Dear Masterbowman Jingo,

I found an underrail laser sight which says it is the only type that can be mounted on a bow.  But I can't mount it to my shortbow (says there's no slots).  Do I have to modify it somehow?  Will it only work with larger bows, or a crossbow maybe?

ps. FreeRange - apparently perception helps with seeing sinkholes too.. *toes crossed*

Perception allows you to detect traps. You need 10 to see land mines.

You need a bow that says it has slots in its examine thing to be able to mount mods onto it.

Dear Massively Statted MeTekillot,

Can I mount a flamethrower or chainsaw on my slotted bow?  I suspect this would be a good way to deal with zombears.
