My problem seems to always be with boarders or fires. Or that mix of boarders, solar flares, and a 3-shield mantis ship.

I should utilize pause more.

@RGS: My first upgrade is always blast doors. I also keep every non-essential room a vacuum, so those pesky-ass boarders die of asphyxiation trying to batter down my doors.

Also, a tip to everyone: don't rush for the exit. Stay out of the rebel fleet line's advance, but explore a sector as much as you can. Every subsequent sector gives you tougher enemies.

You really have to be stingy with how you play and work towards a strategy.  I found myself with boarders sending everything I got, but typically boarders don't come in till later area and if you can avoid mantis areas you can get away from most boarders.  Upgraded doors really help and if you have bombs, you can bomb yourself with a firebomb to take out pesky boarders.  Also the Engi ship, which you will likely unlock first, is a great ship to defend against boarders as it comes with a upgrade that will heal your guys throughout the ship like the medbay, but at a reduced rate.  There is some skill in choosing when to fight and when to run.  That is what this game is all about, making the right decisions.
Or you might get me.

I tried FTL last night.  It's delightfully hectic.

I set up Winamp to play through Planetside 2's proximity voice system.

Now, when I make Galaxy drops, it's to the tune of Fortunate Son and Klendathu Drop.

Got to sector 7 in FTL, but suddenly my ship was brutally out-classed.  Other ships were running 3 shields, 3-4 weapons simultaneously, and 1-2 drones.  My Kestrel simply couldn't compete.  Maybe I need to go back and beat the game in easy mode to unlock better ships.

To The Moon needs to not force me to play it for five hours straight, beating it in one continuous play-through.

The art style is pretty beautiful, but it has many of the same issues it's predecessor had.  There's no sense of pacing, a lot of the spells are pretty pointless, population seems to do nothing, and the city placement mechanics are bizarre.  Your heroes will quickly get to the point where they render traditional armies obsolete and monsters ignore you until they all suddenly attack for no apparent reason.  The tactical battle system has a lot more variety than E:WoM, but gets really samey after a while.  On the other hand, diplomacy is pretty intelligent and seems a lot more reasonable than in many 4x games.

It might become something great in time, but I can't recommend it at present.

Finally!  More Armers need to experience this gem.

Would a trucker MMO (in the spirit of Smokey and the Bandit) be a complete failure?

I firebombed all the major systems.

I disabled the rest with boarders.

Then you make it twice as hard by switching the mothership to AI.

I hate you, FTL.

Ohgod. Dark Souls needs to go die in hell. The first fucking level (past the tutorial level) should never be this hard.

You could always try one of the other 'first' levels :)

It's even more difficult when your screen isn't HD, so you can't read any of the text >_>

A FAQ would explain this better, but as far as I know you have three options for your first level.

Orient yourself so that you are in front of the first campfire facing the cleric guy. If you go towards the cleric guy and go on to the level behind him, you're in skeleton-land--don't go here first unless you're a cleric.

If you go directly behind you and down the elevator, you have two options. [1] You can go all they way down and down that board walkway, but the ghosts will kill you--this is a very high level area that you need to be ready for. You pick up these talismans near that level that allow your melee attacks to hurt the ghosts, but don't use those items--save them and this level for when you're strong enough. [2] after getting off the elevator you can go left up some other stairs. If you are the thief class or you started out with a master key right away, you can go to this area, which has dragons that will kill you but a lot of great items and some other mobs that you will probably be able to kill.

Again, pretending you are at the campfire and looking at the priest, you have one last level that you can go to, that is definitely the easiest. Go right: this leads you to a level called "the undead burg" which has easy monsters that most starting characters can kill in 3-4 hits. Also, you'll encounter a dragon there eventually when you get to this big bridge. If you shoot the dragon's tail a bunch of times its stinger falls off and gives you this sword weapon that makes the entire game a cake walk.

You pretty much have to go through Undead Burg up to the Chapel to begin with don't you?

It's been a while.

i'm thinking about buying d.souls for the pc just to record a playthrough and post it for your amusements
Now you're looking for the secret. But you won’t find it because of course, you're not really looking. You don't really want to work it out. You want to be fooled.

Dark Souls isn't that hard if you're patient. You have to do a lot of soul farming, though, and keep running to a campfire to level up. Then it will be easier. But takes patience.

I'm still waiting for a pad that is actually working, too busy with GW2 to worry about it, though.

Just started Playing Mount & Blade: Warband.  It's pretty awesome, but removing the damage resistance bonuses makes my character have to live like a pauper.  Any tips or suggestions for brilliant mods?  Bonus points if they're fantasy based.

The Floris mod pack is probably your best bet, if I'm remembering correctly.
