What does [THING] look like?

I can understand a bone grill more than I can a frying pan.
A dark-shelled scrab pinches at you, but you dodge out of the way.
A dark-shelled scrab brandishes its bone-handled, obsidian scimitar.
A dark-shelled scrab holds its bloodied wicked-edged, bone scimitar.

A bone grill probably wouldn't work to well. Bones get really brittle when you heat them. Maybe some sort of treated wood rods, if Zalanthans have a way to fireproof stuff.

As for frying pan-esque things, wide, flat stones would probably do the trick.
All the world will be your enemy. When they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you; digger, listener, runner, Prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks, and your people will never be destroyed.

Glass or obsidian might work.

Rantarri?

Found it in Visualizing Zalanthas.

I figure if I can believe Zalanthan glass and obsidian is tough enough not to shatter when chipped into thin blades and smashed over the hard shells of some of our tougher creatures, and that it doesn't take more than a full day to chop a thick tree down with a flint axe that likewise doesn't break.... I can believe Zalanthan bones don't get brittle with fire.

But that's just me.

I've had to moderate a post in this thread that linked to a file-sharing website which had a collection of pdfs.

Please don't link to copyrighted material on the forums. Thanks!

After reading the description of a fairly simple hawkblade, I found myself with images of gunstock warclubs.

Ratlon have about the same dimensions of an inix -- possibly a little bit smaller, and have a beak.

Like these with another set of legs?

That's pretty much right on the money of what I gleaned from their descriptions. x]

Ratlons, in their mdesc, are described as being very similar in shape to an erdlu, and having hard skin, a stubby tail, and a beak.

You know I think if James simply retitled his thread "Cheese" and apologized for his first post being off-topic, all problems would be solved.

Man, that gaj picture earlier is pure nightmare fuel.

Man, that gaj picture earlier is pure nightmare fuel.

Pure nightmare fuel for anyone trying to construct a gaj's phylogenetic tree. Is it a pseudo-arthropod tetrapod, or a pseudo-tetrapod arthropod?!?  Chitinous exoskeleton and compound eyes are clearly arthropod features, but the bony jaw puts it at least at gnathostomata, and the legs are clearly tetrapod (although hexapod would perhaps be more appropriate), probably up to reptilia.

Burning questions:  do they have spiracles, book lungs, or true lungs?  Blood or hemolymph? A true brain or a ganglionic brain?  Three-chambered pump heart or a combined peristaltic heart/aorta? Smooth, cardiac, and striated muscle, or striated muscle only?

Quick, someone sequence a gaj genome so we can get some data for computational phylogenetics.

Or whatever picture you can find of the aliens in Pitch Black that doesn't make them look like muppets (good luck).

The problem with this is everytime I picture those aliens, I can't help but see this one as well:

... the happier my life will be. So, in either case, how do you picture the kryl?

Can you do a quick make believe autopsy of an elf? How can they run for so long and be much weaker than a human at the same time? What their heart and bones must be like? Muscles?

So I couldn't find a good picture, but I always see the buggers from Starship Troopers.

Kryl
Now you're looking for the secret. But you won't find it because of course, you're not really looking. You don't really want to work it out. You want to be fooled.

Always thought of those ever since Synth posted a similar picture for kryl.
Backstab is actually the only dialog option an assassin has.

If a kryl resembled anything the most, it would be the aliens from, well, Aliens. However there are vast differences. Chiefly mandibles and antennae to sense movement. I'm not positive, but I'm given to believe they have more legs than the bipedal Aliens, also. And there's more emphasis on the tail as a weapon (from what I remember, Aliens lurve to bite, and their tails are basically there to make them look cool.)

Kryl are slender too, so definitely not that bulky thing chasing halflings.

Think something like Alien mixed with a bit of this guy.
I tripped and Fale down my stairs. Drink milk and you'll grow Uaptal. I know this guy from the state of Tenneshi. This house will go up Borsail tomorrow. I gave my book to him Nenyuk it back again. I hired this guy golfing to Kadius around for a while.

I thought they had wings.
