I was thinking of compiling a Zalanthan color chart over the next two weeks or so.

If anyone would like to jump in and help, please post a color swatch coordinate and an appropriate name.
Any name used for a color should be available in a help file (cunyati-brown for example) or be something that is common earth knowledge (amber-orange or granite-gray).

If you disagree with a choice, by all means speak your piece and offer a better name for the swatch or a better coordinate for the name.

PS: if someone can find a better chart that has some kind of coordinate system, post it as well.

Having a color chart where everything is related to something in game would be dual purpose.
1. Could help you describe things. 2. Could help everyone memorize and visualize what things look like.

E7 Kadian purple.
B2 Jihae red (or is it darker than that?)

I've always thought Jihae templar red to be more B6, and Jihae moon to be more sort of 1.5, less color than B2, but more than B1.

Thank you!! I'll be happy to help with this. In fact if you guys can figure out all the arm plants and things that correspond with the colors I'll do it up pretty on photo shop.

G8 = Allanaki green?
C1=      Pymlithe
G14= Kolh

I'd leave azure, cerulean, emerald, sapphire, crimson and the others we see commonly used in the game left alone.

and true Jade is F9

Edit) I'd be more helpful if I had better knowledge of Arm's plant life. Pigments are often named for the plants and flowers that share their color.

from the pic of the Allanak flag it looks like the cross is a deeper green rather than Jade.  I always assumed they used jade (the stone) to make the jewelry like the jade crosses and so on as the rock is naturally a green. But on clothing and the flag they used a deeper green dye.  Therefore you could have true Jade (like the stone) and then Allanaki green , like the green shade used on the flag on the website (shrugs)

Allanaki Green IS Jade. (Hence the Jade Sabers, Jade Cross, etc.) And real JADE would be closer to F9, I'll agree.

Personally, I CRINGE at "allanaki Green, Kadian Purple" because it's not something you see everyday.

I would call B5 something more like "blood red," or "Crimson" because to me Suk-Krath (the sun) would have more of an orangish tint to it since it is a ball of fire, and fire is (by and large) orange.

A-10 or A-6 - Suk Krath Red (or Orange?)

I'll agree with D8 for Azure.

As a helper, you can punch in a color in google, OR, go to wikipedia and punch in "blue (color)" and you'll get all sorts of shades.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azure_%28color%29

So, here's some ideas for what else cold be filled in:
- dusky
- midnight / ebon / ravon / pitch / jet - Probably all the same thing, right along with "Khol"
- cunyatti
- agafari
- baobab
- sepia
- umber
- cerise (french for "red", see's some rare usage.)
- cerulean
- steel
- chestnut
- earthy

Mostly darks and browns. We may have to mix and match a bit. Pull out some colors we don't claim and swap them for others we find useful. As I said, wikipedia is an EXCELLENT resource. Check the link.

I don't at all agree with your designation for Jihae red.

I would say it is B-7.  It's the blood moon, not the pureed salmon moon.

I also don't agree with Suk-Krath Red.  Suk-Krath color should be like A-8 or A-9.

Yeah, the Athan sun was a red giant because of a bunch of halfing sorcs trying to harness the power of the sun or something like that, and that's why Athas was a desert planet.

You wouldn't say D1 is more pymlithe? I've never noticed a pink description, just silver. :)

I saw a rose today that reminded me of pymlithe, possibly wrongly. Pale glowingly yellow center surrounded by white petals with pink tips. Would say A1 and C1 could both be described as a pymlithe hue.

And this, for the bark/wood:

So, D1 for wood and A1, C1 for the blooms. Maybe even B1.

boog beat me to it, but I definitely think pymlithe should be D1.  References to pymlithe as a color in game are references to the color of the wood unless otherwise stated (and I don't think I've ever seen a reference to the color of the blooms).

Pymlithe should definitely be D1.  Please!

These are some great color descriptions. I can see these being of use in a lot of rp.

One caveat I must mention is the use of stones to reference color. I only see Emerald and Jade being used so far, and while emeralds are a form of beryl with specific impurities which make them green (the word originates from a Hebrew word meaning "green"), jade can come in a great variety of colors (historically, white jade has been particularly prized in China). This is true for many stones which are categorized by properties other than color, such as diamond, garnet, topaz, and all the stunning varieties of quartz (flint, agate, onyx, citrine, amethyst, carnelian, and jasper are all forms of quartz).

Even emerald, green by definition, has had some misuse due to other colors of beryl being marketed to raise the perceived value. (Google "pink emerald")

My point: Very few stones are actually named for their color, and the nature of mineral composition means that a crystal of any sort could form with impurities that alter the color dramatically.

Once this is filled in, what's the chances this gets added to the website, with an on_hover box with color names?  So, I could hover my mouse over a color, and get a popup box with the color name in it.

There's no shades of white/cream/lighter grey on there.

That would be pretty easy to set up, honestly... could even add in some whiter shades of pale.

In my opinion, E-12 is very clearly the color of Basalt
Being rather grey in appearance, with a hue of blue mixed in.

[Edit]: Flint maybe something akin to a slightly paler A-13 ?

Indigo and Cobalt were mentioned. Are there references to these colors in game already?
Since one is a Terran plant and the other a metal, I just wanted to make sure before adding them.
I believe I've gotten everyone else's suggestions undated.
If anyone disagrees, feel free to argue.

Staff, would it be alright for someone to post or PM me snippets of plant/stone/animal descriptions where there is a disagreement?

I've got almost every plant I've come across indexed, and would love to help if staff give the okay.

P.S. Please do not PM asking for the index. I am not handing it out. I will only give snippets.

Problem being that the color map we have now doesn't have a whole lot of... Well, colors. The first thing I have on the list - Agastakee - is a dull brown-green. There is nothing like that on the map. I mean, I could just find images of every color I think matches and post it next to the name of the pl... Right, well, I'll be back in a few hours.

QuoteA female voice says, in sirihish:

There are tons of color charts that are better than the one posted, which is very limited, for example:

This one is nice because it has the neatly numbered grid...

But there is also:

Which could all be easily made into numbered charts... I'd be willing to do that.

I'm going to send in a request about this first. I want to make sure posting the names of these plants isn't going to piss anyone off. If you see a post here in the near future from me, assume it's been approved.

I like this one. Everyone else good with starting over?

Would someone else like to volunteer to keep it up if so?
I don't mind doing it, but would perfectly happy with handing it off.

If my post gets approved, be prepared for about 150 plants being color coded.

That's not even counting the ones with no color anywhere in their descriptions, or plants that have vague color identifiers like such as 'pale' and such that can't properly be placed. Also the handful of plants I don't have.

I haven't gone through all the pages in this thread, but I have a question, possibly a favor to ask.

I see that you guys are using letter-number codes to reference colors. I am blind, so a-1, b-14, etc, mean nothing to me. Dark purple? light purple? medium purple? purplish-pink, blue-violet, etc, would be extremely helpful for me in terms of matching descriptive words with color names rather than codes.

Has this been done someplace, in text, and could I access it? Is it something that could be done just in list form?

Something like:

dark purple
Kadian purple

Instead of a chart/table?

Quote from: SanveanDescriptions are ideally between 4-10 lines long. The main intention is to convey an accurate picture - don't get bogged down in flowery or overly ornate language that obscures the visual image. Don't fall victim to thesaurus-speak and substitute complex words for straightforward unless they do indeed add a layer of meaning to the writing. Don't use words because they look good and please, for the love of Muk Utep, don't use them if you're unclear on the meaning.

Use Zalanthan terms. Not oak-brown, but cunyati-brown. Pink as a pymlithe blossom. Not snow white but ivory or milk. Keep in mind the differences between various areas - in the Northlands wood is the most common building material, while in the south, stone or bone will be more common.

I note that her note prefers saying "cunyati-brown" or "pink as a pymlithe blossom" rather than using just the word "pymlithe" or "cunyati" as it seems to "obscure the visual image".

I guess I would be fine if it said something like "horta-colored eyes" or "hair the color of the red moon Jihae" - but the english translations, to me, come out like "the oak-haired woman" or "the eggplant-eyed woman" which just makes me giggle.  The first has hair made of wood, and the second has fruits for eyes.

Some of these seem to conflict with the newer stuff people wrote on this thread, like agafari wood (CTRL+F search or it) being brown in bcw81 and sanvean's list, but described as purple in the list by whitt? any staff please feel free to correct anything mercilessly
"And in her long nights, in her long house of smoke and miller's stones, she baked the bread we eat in dreams, strangest loaves, her pies full of anguish and days long dead, her fairy-haunted gingerbread, her cakes wet with tears."

hit 20,000 character limit while editing :o happy xmas armageddon!

gemstone.org/education/gem-by-gem and minerals.net/GemStoneMain.aspx and webcitation.org/query?date=2017-12-23&url=http://archive.fo/2017.02.19-102017/ajsgem.com/articles/gemstone-color-chart.html (just a reference for stuff that matches the names of real life stuff jewellery since Zalanthas things of the same name might look different - any descriptions in the game lore always have precedence - for example marble is usually green instead of "marble-white")

Rare gems in Zalanthas:
Onyx (illustrious black darker than obsidian, but very rare in Zalanthas - is very old rock that has been allowed to crystallise - whereas obsidian is formed in shorter time from cooling volcano magma, making curved bands - like agate, it is also chalcedony, which itself is made from quartz and moganite)
Jet (shiny, blackest black, cold and dark as midnight, called deathstone by jewellers who even themselves can be superstitious about avoiding wearing it - it may or may not be formed from millions of years old wood like on Earth)
Sapphire (royal blue)
Ruby (deep red with a lustre like the heart of fire, rumoured to help with memory)
Garnet (reds and purples, a head merchant of Kadius has been looking for a green one for almost a King's Age)
Topaz (on Earth golden brown to yellow, impurities make it wine red, pale gray, reddish-orange, pale green, or rarely, pink - on Zalanthas it may or may not be only be in the pure yellows)
Opal (or fire opal) (on Earth from clear through white, gray, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, magenta, rose, pink, slate, olive, brown, and black, with white and green opals the most common, black the rarest - on Zalanthas they are said to flash with fire, and be more valuable the more they hold)
Diamond
Emerald (a type of beryl, elves call it the truth-stone for some mysterious reason)
Dur (silvery, from the sea of silt)
Jargoon (barely ever seen, as pale as smoke)

Common:
Carnelian (nobility like to use for carving signets, sometimes, because wax doesn't stick to it)
Citrine (quartz treated with heat by Kadian jewellers)
Quartz (cold grey, translucent grey, dark grey)
Obsidian (not uncommon but not cheap due to it being prized for its wide variety of uses, from weapons to jewellery to tools, even in buildings - and is the currency of the city-states - Allanak has laid claim to a mine)
Beryl (on Earth green, blue, yellow, white, and the rarest, red)
Aquamarine (a type of beryl, blues and greens, superstition is that if you carry one in your pocket you will never feel thirst)
Turquoise (superstitiously known as a luck stone, comes from the north)
Lapis lazuli (imperial blue)
Spinel (sometimes confused with coloured diamonds, but more common than diamonds)
agate (on Earth white, blue, red, green, yellow, orange, brown, pink, purple, grey, black - rarely iridescent - on Zalanthas the colder colours of agate, blues and purples, fetch the best price - it has parallel bands, and like onyx it is made from chalcedony, which itself is made from quartz and moganite)
Blue lace agate
Moss agate
Aventurine (on Earth the most common colour of aventurine is green but may also be orange, brown, yellow, blue, or gray due to other minerals mixed in - on Zalanthas lavender and pinkish purple aventurine is also possible)
Jade (very popular in Allanak due to its patriotic association with the jade cross on black flag; symbol of the Highlord, the Templarate and their Arm of the Dragon soldiers)
serpentine (pretty green and smooth or scaly appearance, soft but polishes well)
Malachite (the brightest green of any stone)
Peridot (olive green or yellow or brownish-green, like the plains grasses, coming from the Northern mountains)
Bloodstone (green with red blood-like spots through it - if it is green Jasper like on Earth then it may not be known, like agate and onyx it is made from chalcedony formed from quartz - on Zalanthas not very popular, known as a warrior's stone)
Tourmaline (bluey-green, yellows, pinks)
Amethyst (believed to cure drunkenness by some)
Sunstone (aventurine feldspar made inside cooling volcanic magma, rich red-browns and orangey-yellows with little fires all through it)
Temboeye (variegated browns and blacks, on Zalanthas it has a greenish lustre that makes it look like it's glowing in the dark)
Moonstone (soft and pearly, on Zalanthas they can seem as if made of moonlight, gleaming as pale as Lirathu) (unknown if can come in other colours like on Earth blue, grey, white, pink, peach, green and brown)
Amber (from ancient trees, rarer in south)
Isilt (bone treated with heavy oil and exposed to a process that allows it to harden to be more durable and aesthetically pleasing, used rarely in building and more commonly in jewelry, small weapons, and objets d'art.  A northern technology rarely seen in the southlands, more expensive there)

Minerals:
alabaster (alabaster white - rare, expensive, soft stone usually used for jewellery or fine cutlery in Zalanthas)
ivory (ivory white - usually used for jewellery due to rarity compared to bone)
basalt (stronger than obsidian and makes better tools, but hard to work with and so even though it is more rare, considered less valuable due to lack of versatility)
flint (yellowish dark grey or blueish dark grey - very common and used for simple tools and weapons)
granite (harder and more durable than sandstone, better, but more expensive to work with)
jasper (rich reddish tint with swirls of other colours through it, often brown - made from chalcedony formed from quartz, like onyx, agate and bloodstone - very common stone in Zalanthas used for tools and parts, as well as jewellery, Krathi are fond of it)
marble (Zalanthan marble is predominantly green though it does appear in many other colours and is just extremely rare)
sandstone (yellow through sandy-brown to red - very common building material)

I would love to see perfumes that are sold have descriptions on the pots along the same lines for their scents instead of just saying the names of plants and objects because if you don't have the OOC experience to know what the item it says something smells like -is-, then you don't know what it is referring to IC when presumably you are able to smell it to be able 'see' that word, it's a bit weird seeming really to have those words there with no explanation... The sniff command working on the vendors could be an easier fix I would guess
"And in her long nights, in her long house of smoke and miller's stones, she baked the bread we eat in dreams, strangest loaves, her pies full of anguish and days long dead, her fairy-haunted gingerbread, her cakes wet with tears."
