Player/Staff Meeting 2 : 2/21/09 - Part 5 - Open Discussion [Part 2]

<rishenko> later man.

<Venomz> Take care.

<Lysine> Sometimes emotes can seem pretty narcissistic, somehow.

<Amanda> Night.

<Zoan> Oh man what happened to my 'l' trigger.

* Morgenes idles out

<Olgaris> Lysine: I should clarify... It's perfectly fine to make a PC
that's completely smug, in thinks and in action.

<Zoan> Let me see if I turned it off.

<Zoan> Aww, I deleted it.

<Olgaris> Lysine: but at the same time, it's really refreshing to see
people actually roleplay with their character's failures.  Lots of people
try to be the hero all the time... Not sure if that's more clear.

<Olgaris> Lysine: Once again, this is personal opinion only.

<Lysine> Ok

<Venomz> Hrm ... I should go play the real armageddon now.

<rishenko> Is it considered in poor taste if, during solo rp, you do a
slew of things....go quiet for a minute or so, another slew, then quiet...?

<Lysine> Are there a lot of smug bastards, then? (Don't expect an
  answer)

<Lysine> jk

<rishenko> Lysine:  Me.

<Booya> I always presumed there were lots of criminals. Are there less
than there used to be a few years ago?

<Olgaris> Rishenko: Not at all.

<Venomz> No.

<Suser> *seconds rish*

<rishenko> Olgaris:  Good, good, I've often been worried about that.

<Lysine> Haha

<rishenko> Suser:  Damn straight.

<Zoan> the smart ones knew how to fool the game.

<Thistle> Criminals would be hard to define and even harder to track
since different regions have different laws an morality.

<Kuroyama> During solo RP, I usually do a bunch of whatever, and then
follow with an emote describing what I did.

<Amanda> I sometimes wind up RPing a good deal, spending a few minutes
making 5-6 things, and then log off for the night, RPing like I made the
things in my time logged off or whatever.

<Psionic_fungus> i would like to see more npc thieves, and staff
  inhabited pickpockets

<Amanda> like "I couldn't find your mind for 3 days", "Yeah, I was busy
  sewing."

<Kuroyama> look

<Kuroyama> Oops.

<Olgaris> Yeah I did that too on the staff channel Kuroyama.

<Kuroyama> Need to watch my windows. :)

<Lysine> The chat room needs a desc. "You are floating in a void. Dark,
formless shapes are moving about you."

<Kuroyama> Heh. Glad I'm not alone, Olgaris!

<Amanda> Everyone was doing it when the chat first opened.

<Olgaris> PF: It would be tricky to do more staff animated thieves
because it would take a lot of time animating them so that they could be
  caught.

<Psionic_fungus> true..

<Psionic_fungus> but it just seems like getting a few coins filched at
  the bar is too rare.

<Olgaris> PF: But, I agree with the sentiment.

<Psionic_fungus> and too harsh on the pps

<rishenko> Since there have been additions of animals, scents, and now
plant-life, what are the chances of opening up or asking the playerbase to
help write random echos in areas, rooms, locations - etc.?

<Kuroyama> Sorry, what's the topic at the moment? If there is one.

<Suser> "Miscellaneous Topics"

<Olgaris> We always accept random echo submissions.

<Psionic_fungus> just a couple wandering, sneaking npcs who would
randomly "steal coins player" would be nice.

<Olgaris> Oh we're just chatting now.

<Olgaris> It's bombard Olgaris time.

<Kuroyama> Ah, gotcha.

<Adhira> Rishenko - that kind of thing can happen, however it requires
a staff member to have the time and interest to take up the project first.

* Zoan flings poo at Olgaris.

<Olgaris> Zoan: I deserved that, but it was Vanth's idea. I just did
  it.

<rishenko> Adhira/Olgaris:  Gotcha.  Thanks.

<Adhira> If a staff member did, then they'd likely post asking for some
player submissions to help them with those

<Zoan> craft poop olgaris into annoyed Storyteller

<Suser> page amanda I feel like I'm networking, rofl.  I wouldn't have
figured it would be that bad for an indy.

<rishenko> Which brings me to another kudos.  Fleshing out all of the
older objects, objects with no descs, companion objects, so on and so forth
(ESPECIALLY CRAFTING, OH GOD THANK YOU) - thanks.  A ton, from the bottom of
my heart.

<Lysine> I'd be curious to see a section of the desert where ruins get
exposed by the wind now and then, and covered later again.

<Olgaris> It takes more than a little poop to annoy me. I've got a
bunch of mounts pooping in my IMM room constantly.

<Suser> *sigh*  Stupid MUSHES.  Sharing solo RP strategies.

<Lysine> When you go there, you'd never quite know what to expect.

<Jingo> Any thoughts on the artistry idea I post on the forums? Think
we might see these in 2.arm?

<Booya> I'm spawning a bebe in June, do you think Arm2 will be up when
I come back? Probably after 3 years or so.

<Lysine> Will your bebe be a player by then?

<Olgaris> Jingo: Haven't seen it, sorry.

<Jingo> kk

<Olgaris> Booya: We don't have a solid date for Arm 2. I'd guess...
  yes?

<Adhira> Jingo - I can't recall it specifically but it would likely
fall into the same category of someone having the bandwidth to do the
  project.

<Kuroyama> If we're flinging suggestions ... I'd love to see more
unusual clans/roles open up. That requires staff to take on additional
supervision duties, so I understand why it doesn't happen, but some of
those closed groups opening for a bit would provide some fun/fresh
  opportunities.

<Booya> lysine: hope not.

<Olgaris> When I saw the announcement for Arm 2 is around when I left
staff a while back... The things that have been been done for Arm 2, and the
stuff in the works for it, are making me really really excited.

<Olgaris> It's going to be an awesome mud, like Armageddon 1 but with
all the really cool ideas fleshed out.

<Olgaris> send venomz Yep.

<Zoan> I'm torn. Opening things like gith etc sound fun, but they pull
away from the three populous areas which already hurt (Nak, Tuluk, the Pah).

<Adhira> Olgaris, keep your private chat to yourself.

<Olgaris> But I want everyone to know who is harassing me!

<Adhira> We don't have any plans to open any of the closed clans or
  races, etc right now.

<rishenko> Is this room open on a regular basis?  To come in, idle, say
  hi?

<Olgaris> No.

<Psionic_fungus> have there been major changes to the concept of tyleki
  since we last heard, perhaps?

<Olgaris> PF: Not sure, I was just commenting on the code additions.

<Adhira> We've recently restructured and part of that reason is because
we need to look after the health of staff. Part of which is finding ways to
keep workloads manageable, and ensure if someone needs time off, we can
  cover the gaps easily.

<Thistle> Additional supervision duties for a single role takes staff
attention away from other players, I think we're trying to work toward
  giving more players more interaction.

<Adhira> No. The chatroom will only be open for preannounced
  events/times

<Lysine> Is the staff generally satisfied with the state of gemmed
life? Interactions, opportunities for gemmed, and so forth?

<Kuroyama> Understood re: clans/races, Adhira. Heck, I'm happy just to
get a second crack at the ankle-biters!

<Olgaris> Lysine: The gemmed live a pretty posh life, from what I can
see. like any character, the world is what you make out of it.

<Zoan> The gemmed are heaps coddled, haha. I remember CAM-era they all
walked around in silks and jewels. Bastards.

<Lysine> I wouldn't call it coddled, necessarily. After ... well, that
  would be IC.

<Kuroyama> I think the loss of the Council was a blow for the Gemmed.
Yes, they have temples to live and practice in, but the Council tied them
together in a clan. Now we're back to Oash or ... Oash.

<Olgaris> I think the staff in general are fine with where the gemmed
are now, and where they are going.

<Kuroyama> But, that is also an IC matter.

<Zoan> It's really rather simple. I don't need to get into it, but
well. I'll say two words. Gemmed. Poop.

<Zoan> I don't think I need to elaborate, dear Olgy :D

<Adhira> I'd like it if we keep talk to non-IC events, especially
  recent ones please

<rishenko> Staff:  Thanks again for the opportunity to chat and ask
questions of you all.  Have a great weekend.

<Kuroyama> Sorry, Adhira. Tried to stay as nonspecific as possible in
  my opinion. :)

<Olgaris> Anything else folks?

<Olgaris> I'm all eyes and fingers.

<Booya> staff: Yeah, thanks for all your work, time and patience. I'm
sure i've got loads of questions but my mind's gone blank for now. Bye!

<Lysine> Yes. Thanks for an enjoyable (usually) and interesting
  (always) game.

<Zoan> As ever, you guys rock. Especially the poop thing Olgy. Haven't
had a chance to play with it (ick) but it's awesome nonetheless.

<Kuroyama> I don't have to be anywhere, but would also like to add my
thanks to staff. I've made an ass of myself over the years, but I
appreciate the tolerance. Trying to do better for ya'll. :)

<Amanda> Seconded, really enjoying the time you guys are putting into
Arm, and can't wait to see Arm 2. Have a great day you guys. And thanks...
  a lot.

<Rhyden I've no questions, I think the staff do an excellent job at
  keeping the playerbase informed. :)

<Olgaris> Well I greatly appreciate the kudos guys, and I know other do
  as well.

<Lysine> What about staff concerns? Are they any player trends you
  could do without?

<Zoan> I AM a player trend they could do without, I think *ducks from
  Adhira*

<Olgaris> Lysine: On my part, I could do without great misconceptions
  about staff and staff intentions.

<Adhira> We don't need any more aussies.

<Rhyden Or Canadians :P

<Olgaris> But I think that's just a handful of very vocal players, and
generally a non-issue other than a bit of a headache now and then.

<Adhira> jk ...

<Zoan> Go get beached, Kiwi D:

<Adhira> jk ...

<Thistle> If there was any thing I'd like to see change..

<Thistle> I would personally like to see an ongoing effort to keep our
  GDB clean and civil.

<Zoan> Come on Adhira, us ANZACs show our love through mockery. <3

<Adhira> Sadly half my family and friends live in Australia. So I try
hard to keep up the outrage but usually fail.

<Olgaris> Yes, absolutely with Thistle on this. I'd love it if the tone
on the GDB was generally a lot more helpful, cooperative, and constructive.

<Zoan> You know, honest historical fact. Ready for some education?

<Zoan> When the First Fleet approached Australia, Captain Cook came
  across NZ. Supplies were dwindling.

<Thistle> I have heard players complain about the way they were treated
on the GDB before and while we do our best as staff to keep it clean, this
is really something that needs to be done on the player side as much as
  ours.

<Zoan> He was like, 'Well, we'll leave all the athletically-inept
fellows here, so we have enough food for the journey onwards.'

<Zoan> And that is how NZ was populated. The End.

<Zoan> (<3 Adhira )

<Lysine> Maybe if the GDB had a thumbs upthumbs down system like Digg
has. The sarcasm and flames would get buried.

<Venomz> No offense, but some players really ask for the treatment they
get. And some don't. I'd guess that I ask for the treatment I get, though it
only tends to pertain to matters of religion.

<Adhira> ignore zoan

<Thistle> Well that is kind of the spiraling problem I see Venomz.

<Zoan> XD

<Psionic_fungus> i don't post on the gdb anymore because it became
pointless to try to have a construtive discussion.

<Psionic_fungus> for me, anyhow.

<Thistle> If you go into the forums with that mentality than when one
person acts in a certain way it brings down everyone with them.

<Kuroyama> Olgaris, what staff misconceptions were troubling you?

<Drayab I agree with Thistle. 'They were asking for it' is not an
  excuse to be rude.

<Venomz> I don't go into the forums with any mentality, THisle, but I
see what I see. I don't mess with other posters, either, s'far as downin'
them goes, but there are times when I can't feel sorry for them.

<Thistle> As to the thumbs updown, that has been discussed.

<Thistle> Feeling sorry for them or not, those kinds of threads can be
intimidating to people and adversely affect the game and the game community.

<Lysine> It's simple. Before you post, remind yourself that <x being
wrong on a point doesnt = <x being a total idiot about everything.

<Venomz> I'm polite. Some posters are not, and pride themselves on not
  being.

<Venomz> Fair enough.

<Lysine> Or don't post at all. I've given up on it for a while.

<Thistle> See that is the kind of thing that I find troubling.

<Venomz> If I were staff, I'd just 'idiot' everyone who broke the
  polite rule.

<Venomz> And everyione who broke the idiot rule too.

<Psionic_fungus> rindan, before he stopped posting, said it best.
don't respond to people, respond to ideas.  but... well... it's too
difficult for me to not take the bait, most times.

<Venomz> It's hard, sometimes, PF. Heh. I've done pretty good for the
most part, but it's hard sometimes. That said, everybody needs a paragon.

* Venomz shines.

<Venomz> ;)

<Thistle> Any other questions?

<Dakurus> Is is true you're a pain?

* Zoan worships Venomz.

<Dakurus> When someone tries to pluck you without gloves?

<Lysine> Why do I picture Shaloooonsh as a monster from the sewers?

<Thistle> O_O

<Olgaris> Lysine: We've been discussing a way to rate posts, and how to
  handle that.

<Thistle> _

<Olgaris> I'm an ass.

<Zoan> Shalooonsh ~= sewer horror.

<Thistle> I do not respond to rumors and speculation Dakurus, next
  question please?

<Olgaris> Olgaris the GIANT ASS POOP MAN is my sdesc as set by Nyr.

<Zoan> inform Mr. Nyrbot that I approve.

<Olgaris> Not that we're immature or anything...

<Thistle> Only Olgaris.

<Zoan> heehee...poop

<Venomz> He claims that's Shaloonsh fault.

<Venomz> I have no trouble believing that.

<Olgaris> So back to the topic we were discussing, I think it's
important for everyone to just realize that we're all here to
play a game and have fun.

<Olgaris> The fact that people get so worked up and angry over the
game, only goes to prove how good it really is. But sometimes we just need
to step back and realize we really are all on the same team.

<Kuroyama> Tell me about it. I would not stay sane without Arm.

<Olgaris> The "Make Armageddon the Most Fun Ever" game.

<Zoan> liar. Murder, Corruption, Betrayal. It's our arena of
  sado-masochism.

<Olgaris> Oh yeah, we're on the same OOC team. Inside the game,
  everyone for themselves.

<Venomz> Yeh. Players need to realize that being on staff should only
change the facat, not the reality of having fun.

<Venomz> you guys suck up a lotta punches to give us a place to play
and the tools to do so.

<Zoan> You roll up a dood, you get him or her to 100 days, then you
  *die*. It's wonderfully masochistic.

<Olgaris> Which is the other thing that I'd like to see less of as an
immortal, and I mentioned it on the GDB in Bebop's thread: OOC
  communication.

<Thistle> I need to back Olgaris up on that.

<Venomz> At the same time, you guys make usre you never forget where
-you-= came from, and how you felt back in your player days.

<Olgaris> For the most part, players are great about this... But man it
can really, really, ruin stuff for everyone.

<Zoan> Oh hai it's a Myr.

<Myrdryn> Hi.  I'm guessing he meeting has come and gone?

<Olgaris> As I mentioned on the GDB, I have a hunch that some of the
most vocal and unconstructive complaints come from some of the people who
are most caught up in OOC communication about IC things.

<Muramoa> pretty much

<Olgaris> Yeah Myrdryn, now we're just partying.

<Olgaris> And I think it's just really a shame that these people share
inaccurate information with one another, feel as though they represent the
playerbase as a whole, and then make the GDB look ugly.

<Kassindra> Olgaris I loved your response to that, even if some didn't
like it. But I know how it can be when players try to give their little half
  truths.

<Olgaris> But, for the most part, the massive majority of the players
  are totally awesome.

<Zoan> Olgy - Nerf Tan Muark plz. I've never been one, never seen one,
but CLEARLY they get staff love and everything and it's not fair!!!

<Zoan> like that basically? :P

<Olgaris> Yeah kind of Zoan.

<Jingo> And give the merchant houses some waterslides.

<Lysine> That stems back to 1996.

<Zoan> dude, I want those slip'n'slides. How fun are they?

<Muramoa> Arm 2's waterslide code is going to be 10x as advanced as Arm
  1's.

<Bushranger> Good to hear

<Lysine> If you think the GDB can get bad, think back to ISCA BBS.

<Zoan> Ginka automatically AIs everything for me. It loves me.

<Bushranger> Painful memories Lysine!

<Olgaris> There's only one terrible truth about ginka:

<Muramoa> Racial skin friction, taking eq into account, as well as a
  swim skill check.

<Bushranger> Azroen drank all the beer on ginka?

<Muramoa> For when you splash into the pool at the end

<Olgaris> There's only one terrible truth about ginka:

<Olgaris> When you get a desc change, ginka will kill you!

<Kassindra> lol

<Thistle> *rolls eyes*

<Zoan> I got a desc change WHEN I was dead.

<Kuroyama> Ginka is cruel about stats. I always get awesome rolls on
the characters who'll never use them.

<Zoan> and the resolution reply was real smug. 'Well, you're dead!
  Don't need this!'

<Zoan> I laughed.

<Morgenes> alright folks, thanks for coming, please exit stage left
