As the subject says, I need shields.  Mostly what I'm looking for are shields made from northern materials, usually this will mean wooden shields.  Send submissions to me at myrdryn@armageddon.org

Please include your account name so I can give you credit for your submissions.

Just objects, or crafting recipes as well?

Let's think, what kinds of material are there in Tuluk?  And what different kinds of wood are there?

So far I've got maar, baobab, and agafari.

Nobody ever remembers Thornwood or Pymlithe...sigh.

Maar wood!!!

But heh, seems like Agafary, Baobab, and Cunyati are the only good woods for weapons as they're the only hardwoods.

In addition to wood and shell, animal skins, and a wide range of bone, the North also has plantlife aside from trees. Wood can be used from vines, too.

I can envision a shield made out of stiffened yuku vines and layered duskhorn hide, for example.

DOn't forget to take into account cost/rarity of the material as well as strength. Shields tend to take a BEATING unless they are ornamental, and bear in mind making it out of expensive crap, means expensive repairs or replacements. Course I'm guessing he wants a range, but just something to consider when going over materials.

Any chance someone could post a range of hardness when it comes to wood? Strongest to weakest?

This resource page should be useful:

http://www.armageddon.org/general/plantlife.html

From this I would suggest that:

Hardwoods

Agafari is most dense
Baobab is next
Cuyanti is next (but rare)

Softwoods

Cylini - tall and slender
Cynipri - smaller than cylini
Jallal - fruit tree
Maar - twisted and stubby
Pymlithe - small trees

Now, what wood is best for shields?  After looking at how shields are made - I'm thinking that a softwood is better (for the flex and give) bound with hide.  A hardwood may be more prone to shattering / cracking upon being hit.

On the flip side, agafari has proven itself to be incredibly durable, so that may be an effective option as well.

After taking a look at some shield making resources discussing the type of wood to use - any wood is suitable so long as it is paired up with the right type of bindings.

As for what hides to use - the larger, thicker, and stiffer the better.  So something along the lines of mekillot would be great.
