Title: Soap
Post by: Metrophilia on March 04, 2019, 03:42:03 PM
Soaps should act like perfumes on player characters.

You should be able to >use soap me and get clean. The smell registered to the soap would transfer to you like perfume does. IN the case where it is that lumpy greasy generic soap a simple He/she/they smell/s clean would suffice.

Use of soap should require the simultaneous use of at least a little water. Especially for bathing an entire humanoid body.

It doesn't require it for equipment cleaning but I can see that. So add water.

>use soap <container> me

Smell:  fine.

Using water:  No.  Why can't you just imagine that a single waterskin of water costing 20% of a month's pay includes a substantial amount of virtual water that accounts for things like that?  I just don't understand the seemingly never-ending desire to hard-code nuisances into a game that is already incredibly frustrating by modern gaming standards.

Soap feels really anachronistic to me in this setting. We have armor brushes and scrub sand. We have strigils, cleansing oils, and perfumes. Why do we have waterless soap? Why would anyone short of merchants or nobles waste their money on soap? Nobody knows, we all just rp around it.

I'd like to see soap go the way of the sandwich.

If you can't afford a bit of water for washing, I don't see why you should be walking around looking as if you don't lead a dirty, bloody life.

If the idea of having to take a waterskin from your pack before using a bar of soap is onerous to you, I don't know what to say.

Spit doesn't come out of nowhere. If you deplete the body of moisture by exuding a gob of spit, you're going to eventually need to drink an equivalent amount of water. It makes no sense to use spit.

Which makes urine the obvious choice.

Which worked in Rome!

I always kind of assumed 'cleaning fluid' was a nice way of saying 'buckets of foul piss'.

That's the whole idea of a "pot to piss in", though usually it was more for tanners using the acids in urine to soften hides. If you were incredibly destitute, you didn't even have a pot to piss in.

So why wouldn't you put that piss to use? I had a PC Merchant a while ago who, at one point, was going to start buying inix piss from the stables, to see if it was better or worse than human piss.

It's not about "pulling a waterskin from my pack," it's about having to grind actual coins for things that arguably are better-handled by virtual coins.

Two things:

1) The Armageddon economy is not internally consistent, and otherwise makes little sense in a number of different areas.

2) From a gameplay perspective, grinding extra coins just to clean up is already annoying.  What is the rationale for making it even -more- annoying?
