That was about the same time I first joined. I remember it was before winter vacation because I died with one of my characters before winter vacation and it took until the end for them to approve my next character.

I can't remember exactly, and I'm not actually sure how to find out. On my second, and current account, a penned gladiator is the oldest entry, and that is August 30, 2001. But I had a main character on this account that's listed when I log into the MUD itself, but not in my account on the webpage. And I had two other characters a year or two before that.
So although I can't nail down this answer, my first foray (but not real characters to me) into this game was in 99-00, but my first real character was created in either late 00 or early 2001.
I started college in 2003, so I think my first character was created probably around December-ish of 2003.
My first MUD character was created probably in 1996 on EmeraldMUD.

12 years old, winter semester, the seventh-grade advanced math teacher let 3 dorky middle schoolers eat lunch in his classroom and watch him MUD. I can't remember anything about the mud except the currency was in pearls I think

This only works if your first character was made when Armageddon had an account system. Some of us predate accounts.
Were there approval emails back then? Or did you just keep refreshing the MUD until you saw you were approved?

There were indeed approval emails back then.
That might be a way to come up with a date for you older veterans, if you still have access to the emails you used to use back then.

At some point in 2002... I played for a few months before I signed up on the GDB, IIRC.

Got kanked by halflings right outside the gates of Tuluk, my guts spilling out in many colors as my hands went to them to try to hold them in. Don't remember the year, doubt it was earlier than 2008.

March, a little earlier this month! I had -so- much fun, and I'm happy that I'd made something of an impact on others. I'm super excited to make this next character and pour in the same heart I did from my first. This place is a lot of fun, and I feel I'll be here a while!
