Title: Lamest Deaths?
Post by: oggotale on October 31, 2018, 11:50:01 AM
It hurts, oh it hurts.

What are some moments where you made a dumb mistake or fuck-up, which ended up in a lame, "stupid death" for your character?

My lamest deaths are always passing out/forgetting I logged in while at keyboard/ phone and dying to NPCs or dehydration. I always facepalm myself into a coma when that happens. Have lost many amazing or fun characters this way.

A black beetle once killed me in the Red Storm bazaar. It just kept walking past the guards to get me, and moved quicker than they had time to attack it. Knocked me to -6hp in two hits, and I bled out after it got insta-gibbed when the soldiers caught up ::)

Being PKed by a thrown projectile at less than an hour played back when you couldn't cast at certain tribal tents.

I'm pretty sure I know exactly who did it, too. And even though I love this player, you're still a god damn butthole. <3

On one of my first characters, I was a hunter in Salaar and it was promotion day. Our lead hunter took a group of us out and we were showing what we had learned during our time as recruits. I did not have a firm grasp of how archery worked so when I went to shoot a black beetle in the distance I used beetle as the keyword and I might of miss keyed either direction or distance (this was over ten years ago) But I shot my mount (war beetle) And it promptly one hit me.

Promotion day, beep, welcome to armageddon.

Half-giant trying to be helpful.  Drunk Kuraci merchant.

"Whoo hoo!  I keep falling down!  Carry me, big fella!"
The shit-faced Kuraci sloppily tosses himself into your arms.

"Um.... Are you /sure/ Merchant Zippittydo-da?"

"Wazza matter?  Giddy-yuuuuuuuuup!!"

Sudue Zippittydo.

Four thousand hooded, dun-cloaked figures arrive from the East.
"Wrong move, criminal!" shout four thousand hooded, dun-cloaked figures.

The shit-faced Kuraci merchant says, in slurred Cavalish, "...oh."

**Beep**

Sitting on a bench at extremely heavy encumbrance.. Get backstabbed and promptly two-rounded into critical. No emote or offer for any sort of RP before typing kill on my critical state. Beep. (jerk)

Grinding out your magick, typing out commands and by chance mixing one up and casting it on yourself... Suddenly you're yuqa-level poisoned and dying by accident... Wish up for help, but none comes. Beep.

#1 Lamest of all time:  dude in IRC talked me into making a pair of criminals together.  First time we meet up, he murders my PC for the noob coins  ::)

Had a pretty amazing statroll on that burglar, too.

My sweet, dumb, fun-loving HG from Tuluk, who didn't use spice,  went through the Allanaki gates with something in her pack that unbeknownst to her (and me) was classified as spice.

Waaaaaaah!!!  She put up a valiant but ultimately futile effort to flee for quite a while.  I was so sad.

Didn't know templars would kill you for having spice?

Don't they try to subdue even if you're wanted for murder? I thought the highlord was atleast, kind of merciful.

My greatest shame...

Be Moe, playing a new character:
>Good stat rolls, wonderful personality.  RP clicks IMMEDIATELY.
>Making friends, earning good coin grebbing, very promising future.
>Playing late at night.
>Find a corpse in the market, what luck!
>Loot waterskin.  Mix with my own water supply.
>Wonder about poison...

Be Moe's insomnia-addled brain:
>Different liquid types don't mix.
>This must be pure, safe water!

Be Moe's character:
>Drink.
>That tasted funny.
>BLUUURG BLUUURGH BLUUURGH
>Run to tavern.  Empty.
>Run to other tavern.  Empty.
>Contact everyone.  You cannot find their mind.
>Die alone.

Be Moe:
>Rage at own stupidity.
>Really heartbroken over amazing, fun character.
>Desperately put in a resurrection request.   ( ::) )
>Calm down, own up to own mistake, cancel request with apology note to staff.
>Too painful to roll a new character, quit game for a year.

This was a long time ago, like 10+ years, and I think spice code has been changed since then.  Also, I believe that the guards attacking with no attempt to subdue might have had something to do with the fact that my PC was not an Allanak citizen.

Seems like key'ing once before killing if you have time is a good idea.

Whyd lizard redirect to inix though?

1. Key wasn't a command years ago.
2. An inix is a type of lizard, and lizard is/was a keyword for them.

Also re: Medena's HG death: it was a thing that wasn't immediately identifiable as spice, so neither she nor her character knew that's what it was.

Lamest death for me:

Had a burglar out of Red Storm. Back when storms raged both inside and outside the village, sometimes for RL days. I rolled her up during one of those periods. Four days later, and she hadn't left the village. I realized what a stupid idea it was to create her, and tried to kill her off by wandering outside the gates during said tremendous sandstorm.

She wandered til I was out of stamina. So I rested. And nothing killed her. There was no way to log out at the time (quit OOC wasn't a command then) so I just sat there, being frustrated. She started getting hungry. Then thirsty. I couldn't move her, couldn't quit out, and there weren't any baddies. So I just went linkdead. Came back the next day and she was still alive, still starving, still thirsty, still not enough stamina points to move, still no baddies.

I believe I might have had to wish up for a quick death, at that point. The thing that makes it lame: when you are TRYING to get your character killed off and can't succeed.

Because inix are lizards. Especially those that were tamed instead of purchased.

My lamest deaths.

Wearing rat-drape while guiding AoD patrols through sewers.

Doing a lecture to a young mage on mechanics of magical flight and landings as a sorcerer and then walking off a cliff without flying.

The age old kicking someone in a tavern while brawling.

Lamest death ever: I lost internet connection for a day, something about construction in the area cutting a cable, which left my character linkdead on a road in Allanak. When I managed to reconnect the next day I found out he was dead. I put in a request to ask how he died because I've had a couple of linkdead deaths and not knowing is pretty bad. I found out he was PKilled while linkdead :(

Ditto.

Plus little code mistakes that have horrific consequences. Like the one time I tried to drink from a cask of nice clear water on a wagon but 1.cask turned out to be cleaning fluid.

I friend, years ago, sent me a log of his 1 day old PCs death. The death itself is expected, he shouldn't have been there. But even I at the time with a 20 day character would've gotten a little nervous. I don't have the log anymore, but it went something like...

The man arrives from the east, whistling a travelling a tune.

A raptor has arrived from the west.
A raptor has arrived from the west.

A raptor has arrived from the north.
A raptor has arrived from the north.

He never even got a chance to emote.

I dont know if it's my lamest, or most hilarious death. But I figured I'll post it anyway. To basically describe it. I had ... six? Demons play ping pong with my unconscious self across the world. Each time I'm echoed "You can't see anything; you're sleeping!", that's my body being hurled through one room towards one entity, or another.

Any time I was hunting and thought I mounted, but typoed and missed it and was killed by scrab, spider, raptor etc...from exhaustion because I was running around without realizing it.

ETA:Yes, this happened enough times for me to say any time, much to my shame. And usually just a few rooms away from a gate.

That doesn't happen if you have a barrier up.

I think I was a dwarf at the time, or one of my many countless human women, but I'm at the east gate and this elf enters the room, says "Friend" (yep I was a dwarf) and walks up. Turns out he ran too much and was dying of thirst.

I ALWAYS have a full waterskin with me, so I dig into my pack and hand it to him.

Dehydration.

Need to rest your mount, so you post up hide and wait... then you get pulled into a RL work call or something that ends up being way more involved than expected and takes over your attention.

Then you remember that you didn't log off a few hours later, come back to your computer and your PC is dead.

Then you consider sending a res request, but your just not that soft. You'd never be able to look at yourself in the mirror the same way ever again.

Snake bite. I was playing a mage and was bit by a snake, I decided to hole up in a cave and try and wait it out. Then, like a fool, I typed 'sleep'. Now my character can't wake up until their stamina is high enough, and my stamina isn't regenerating because I am suffering from poison.

So over the next 40 minutes I got to watch as my HP slowly ticked down to the point I died. If I hadn't tried to sleep, I could have booked it the short distance to Luir's and bought myself a cure.

Hitting "n" one too many times in the Labryrinth while at work, only to alt-tab to the Knock-Out blow.

Probably would have survived, too, but there was one buggy NPC that kept attacking (they're designed not to). I woke up, got attacked for big numbers, and spent half an hour bleeding out.

I liked him.

His joke is that there's nothing wrong with extending an elf a fake lifeline and enjoying watching them die.  :D

Following a musashi PC off the top of a mountain after a friendly little chat.  ::)

We were both Whirans. HIS anti fall damage spell was still active.  ;D

Imho it doesn't get any lamer than 'death to follow code', because there's realistically no way any non-suicidal character would do that... they'd see the cliff and be like, hell no I'm not taking that last step.

I had just made a city elf in the rinth.  I suddenly found scores of bodies on the eastside.  Sold it all, looked around that day and found no one, so I thought I was in the clear after a few hours.  Logged in the next day to sell more stuff and found the culprit: A half-giant sitting at one of the shops.  He grinned.  I grinned back, thinking there might be some rp.  I was dead before I could type "flee".

I'm not a fan of interlopers in the rinth looking for free sparring.  >:(

Honestly, the rinth is the one place in the game where I'm not sure I'm going to be alive tomorrow when I play there. I kind of really like that about the rinth. Every day you stay alive is a win.

I don't mind that there's death in the Rinth, by any means.  It's the idea that some half giant ran amok in there and murdered almost all of the eastern half of it with seemingly no reason.

My very first character was a Runner in the Byn. A classic chalton boots, bone studded backpack, I-typed-sleep-and-i-can't-figure-out-how-to-wake-up Runner.

He gets invited out on a ride with two experienced Bynners. One of them says "Woah, don't go south." I decide I want to see this thing that is so scary, so I type "l s", but don't quite press the "l" hard enough.

A brief second of confusion followed by two screens of spiders piling on this newbie Runner.

Beeeeeeep.  :'(

In my early days I would explore and simply get trapped in sandstorms and run out of water. Sitting in blinding sand is thirsty work.

I've had a couple of lame and/or weird deaths of note but they were so long ago, I can't remember.

I had a merchant character waiting in the desert for their stamina to go up (it was close to 0). A "red beaked vulture" entered the room, and being bored of waiting for my character to rest I decided to attack it. Turns out merchants are really, really bad at combat. Cue 30 minutes of misses by both of us and me being pecked to death as I couldn't flee.

Ganked by two c-elf PCs I could have killed multiple times due to maxed stealth and backstab but didn't...only to have them sap/kill me one day without any RP at all. Was a disappointing death, mainly because there was zero RP involved whereas I constantly tried to give them atmospheric scenes without taking the easy route of killing them every time they wandered into the wrong area. Stopped playing for years after that and never got fully into the game again.

I was playing a templar in Allanak and drunk poisoned wine. I marched to the Vividuan temple and demanded that I be healed, wishing up to animate the Vividuan elder.

Immortal animates Vividuan elder. Is cowed by my threats and tries to heal me of poison. Immortal doesn't know the words to the spell, and I die waiting for my cure.

Desert elves on my gith.
Story behind this were the elves being PK-bloodthirsty. Singling our gith PCs out of crowds of gith with the same cloaks and height, wearing gith gear to blend in with the NPCs from a distance (despite the fact gith are hunched and scaly and elves are not), spam-fleeing when we'd enter rooms before we could fire off emotes to start the scene which we were instructed to do. Got baited into a 3v1 where 2 of the people were hidden while I was chasing one of them around the Tablelands. You feel very sick! Your vision goes black, beep.

I had almost this exact experience.

I guess the lesson I took from it was that some people are here primarily "gaming," getting to the max level and playing to win. If you don't have any interest in competing in that way, just avoid avoid avoid. In my case though, I was trying soooooooo haaaard to do just that. It simply didn't matter.

Not going to list any PKs because no matter how shitty it felt on my end, I don't know what was happening on the other side. I've definitely been insta-ganked on characters who made powerful enemies and totally deserved it and I consider those to be good deaths.

My Lamest might actually be my most memorable death, and came more as a result of my sticking to roleplay than the code. Such a tough choice!

Had a character named Jadara in the early-mid-2ks, made her way up through the Wyverns to Lieutenant, had this lovely little life going on, and was co-lead of the expedition to Luir's following the mantis takeover (though we didn't know what it was initially). We got to Luir's with the Byn and sniffed around a bit before this MASSIVE mantid ambush overwhelmed us. Jadara abused her love of shields to help hold off the attack while most of the party got back to the wagons. Beaten and bruise, she makes it back to the wagon before an arrow strikes her in the neck and knocks her to 1 damage!

Somehow, we got away with only a few deaths from new characters (sorry!). Jada is played up as having a broken arm from the ordeal and having her shield ruined in the fight. All wrapped up from arrow wounds, etc. And less than a few in-game days later, the new noble in the House decides to send her out to destroy a spider hole, despite her protest of being Really Badly Messed Up. Long story short, spider holes were no joke, and I took her there and refused to use her shield, via her arm being broken. She ended up getting mauled while saving the other Wyverns, and few Byn on the trip (save that first runner that got hit by ALL the spiders, sorry! XD), when I'm more than confident the shield would've been enough to get her to safely flee.

Was my first character in the area of 100 days, so I was super attached and extremely bitter about it for a long time. Looking back on it so far now, I like the idea that she had balls the size of a mekillot's.

Both of my lamest deaths were by Templars.

-Be a special apped Irofel bard exiled from Tuluk
-Become Arena champion, when commoners had Arena tournaments, defeat Gage Gritshaw
-Become a Byn Sergeant, promoted from Runner
-Feud with my former Sergeant
-Challenge him to a fight to gates outside of Tuluk
-Beat him, by pulling a Jack Sparrow, disarming and grabbing his weapon
-Get kicked out of Byn by Imms even though there are no witnesses
-Go back South after pleading in vain for the Circle to let me back in
-Hatch a scheme to kidnap the granddaughter of Irofel's masterbard's grandchild which is an actual NPC
-Go back to Nak to scheme, getting ready to become an epic raider as a super powerful warrior in the game
-Get stopped by a Templar
-Get pulled into a room for questioning
-Honestly have no idea IC or OOC what's going on
-Get attacked
-Run away, kill 4 NPC soldiers, even two at a time
-Get thrown into the arena, defeat all thrown at me
-Almost even defeat the mul
-Imms animate other templars, like hey maybe this person is useful enough to not kill?
-PC templar stills says no
-Send in Gaj
-Beep

Still no idea why I died, and annoyed I didn't get to go on that raider, rampage, revenge plot.

-Bo is a gambling addict
-Bo gets the feels for Sergeant Raul in the Byn
-Bo one day gets exiled from a southern Templar for literally no reason I can understand
-Bo flees to the north, keeps up a relationship with Sergeant Raul, gets knocked up
-Bo meets up with Raul and Byn crew, at a spooky cave, with a spooky person in it
-Bo and crew get WRECKT, due to [redacted] Bo instantly ends up in a chasm... some where
-Everything goes down, there is a rescue crew running through the forest chased by halflings
-There is a giant creature coming to visit
-Imms are dropping hallucinations as Bo begins to die of thirst
-Bo is visited by spooky person who leaves her to die then vanishes
-Rescue team is repelling down the chasm, shoving water down Bo's throat as they all clamber to safety, huge creature in pursuit
-Indiana Jones moment, running pursued by halfings through the forest
-A beetle is devoured, run, run, run - leave it behind
-Escape, safe at last!
-Spooky magicker torments Bo, trying to rip her through time and space - in Tuluk this is a problem
-Literally next day RL after this event, I casually log on in the middle of the night to see if Bo's adopted PC son is online since I hadn't seen him in awhile
-Get nabbed by Templarate for spooky happenings
-It is now wee hours of morning, I have work next day - keep saying OOC I can not stay on as I am being interrogated, but Templar acts like they'll keep Bo alive
-Character is executed by the Templarate one RL day after epic rescue
-Beep
-It is now 10 am and I am using a half-day of PTO at work and my character is dead

The only other I can think of?  One time I had a character I liked try to kill a carru.  Reel is a heck of a skill.

All of the deaths that I have had that I consider 'lame' are the result of weird code interactions. The code has murder-corrupt-betrayed me far more lamely than any coordinated PC action ever has.

As an example:

Attack of opportunities trigger on a successful flee. They do NOT trigger on your target departing the room. So if your target attempts to flee to an exit that is too small for them, or has a climb check that they fail, the AOO occurs and you get a free hit and they're still in the room with you.

This would only be a small problem if they were considered out of combat with you after this, and could choose an appropriate exit while you were in kill delay, or reattempt the climb a few times before your delay clears. However, AOOs that resolve with the target still in the room with you re-engage combat, meaning that if you're in the room with someone after a successful flee, you're not disengaged. You cannot simply type a different exit, you have to flee again.

And take another AOO. Until you get an exit you can fit through or pass a climb check, you're infinitely engaged and taking a boosted hit every time you try to exfiltrate the situation.

This became very relevant to me when my 4 day old PC lacking climb fell into a hole, the only way out of which was a single exit that was a climb. Sadly, a dujat worm had at some point also fallen into that hole. Cue 10 successful flee attempts and 0 successful climb attempts, and 10 AOO rengaging me over and over looping the situation until I was dead.

The only lameness I've ever had that involved other PCs was never the fault of those PCs. It's more code stuff that pivots PvP conflict in Arm away from titanic extended duels to the death and into one-hit-kill gotchas.

Crim code smuggling spice through the gates and a mistyped button on an otherwise highly successful criminal. The death was so crappy and accidental I remember Quick even messaged me to try and get me straight back in via special app but of course that's a big no.
