Hey Pretenders,

Despite the general feeling that some people didn't want to commit to more than one game at, I've been feeling a bit of an itch for another one.  So, I've been thinking about doing a format I'd wanted to try for a while: a pure PvE coop battle.

The setup:
-Middle Ages
-All human players part of a pretender/disciple team.
-Independent AI nations set to "impossible"
--Ermor
--Asphodel
--R'lyeh
--Sceleria
--+more "evil" nations (Nazca, C'tis, Shinuyama, Jotunheim) as needed
-Story events, increased magic sites, powerful thrones

This should be a nice, low-stakes, low-stress, high-adventure game.  Great for newbies wanting to see more experienced players in action.  Doesn't need a large player count.

Actually, this type of game I can probably participate in. It would be a lot less time consuming than a pvp game, and I've been itching for more dominions too.

Yeah, Marignon is a prime candidate for pretender, with +2 fire, +2 astral bless points.  I mocked up this build:

I'd still have to re-learn the game and solo practice a bit. Right now I have about 2-3 hours of free time a day, half of which I spend passing out in front of the TV, too exhausted to even keep my eyes open.

I'll read the thread, though, so... keep those informative posts from other Dominions threads coming! They're great for 10 minute breaks in between the writing and editing.

Disciple games are incredibly hard vs AI because they co-ordinate perfectly, sounds good.

My understanding is AI actually doesn't function well as a disciple and you get a harder challenge with them being independent.

I can certainly play that god I posted (though I've played a lot of Marignon so if someone else is burning for fiery justice I'm happy to play something else).

The only downside is, of course, imprisoned means disciples won't awaken until ~15 months.  Also note: you don't get to appoint a prophet in disciple games.

Well awe I think is not the best. It's useless against mindless troops. Also that's 3 years in at least. Fire shield, attack, or even morale would be my suggestions

Awe is a goddamn horrible choice vs the armies of the night, and will be almost useless vs our opponents since the majority will be mindless. Fire shield would be a better choice, or even attack and less asleep. The disciples will need to expand ASAP if we want a chance of winning and having them away for 15 turns will sign the alliance of light and fire's death warrant.

Solar weapons is an amazing choice for our alliance though.

Also blood surge is my favorite bless. Considering we will be fighting masses of low-tier troops it is definately a winner here.

Also sorry if I came off as rude, I just have fun being over the top when talking dom strategy.

So would you rather have Fire Shield or some combination of Attack Skill, Inspirational Presence, or more scales/dominion?

It's also possible to trade MR to fit in Twist Fate, though I suspect MR is more widely applicable.

Looks like we could also afford 4 points in a new path without too much fuss, though I'd have to drop down to Astral 4 which puts a few end-game spells and items out of reach.

I recommend Ulm. They're good-ish, and an excellent nation for learning on. Like Abysia, they do a couple of things really well which makes them easier to pick up and experiment with. They're primarily focused on earth magic and super-heavy infantry.

Write me in for T'ien Ch'i, I had a lot of fun with them in SP recently.

Ulm is probably the most straight-forward nation.  It has really tough troops but it won't benefit much from the awesome bless of the prime pretender.  Late-game power often comes from forging items for thugs/super-combatants.

Pythium has very solid troops and good mages, but you'd need to learn how to set up communions and storms for mid/late game power.

Tien'Chi has solid troops.  Their mages have a lot of different paths, though, which is great for experimenting but difficult to put together a coherent strategy.

Pangea, decent troops, earth and nature mages which can be simple to use, though most of their late-game power comes from tapping into blood magic.


Of those options, I guess my top one is Pythium.  Communions are probably easier to learn than blood magic, equipping thugs, or whatever it is late-game Tien Chi players do (lol).

I'll also add that I wouldn't mind someone playing my turn for me in this game if I were unavailable. So I haven't set a password for the disciple I already made (sure is much simpler making a disciple than a pretender).

I don't have strong opinions on the actual pretender since TC can work under a lot of circumstances and doesn't seem to rely heavily on sacreds to begin with. I think all of the proposed nations so far are going to benefit from a bit of production, though. Well, I don't recommend drain either, even if Ulm joins the roster. We'll probably need neutral or reduced MR checks to deal with the skelly swarms.

We're looking at Order 3, Production 3, and Growth 3 no matter what.  May also be able to fit 1-2 more scales of luck or magic.

Well if no one else wants, I'll grab Pythium. Someone's gotta represent the survivors!

I think there's also a decent argument to make for Sceleria to be desperate survivors who have tried to "fight fire with Fire" as it were. Or C'tis.

I ran a few tests for clustered vs. unclustered starts.  While clustered starts may mean it's easier to send support to someone, it seems like a high probability that at least one player could get locked in and not have a war front to expand into.

I like that pretender build. I'm not wild about fire shield because it's incarnate and we're going imprisoned. Plus attack skill means more repels and more quick kills which means more blood surges. Sacred killing machines.

I just needed to mark slots as "disciple".  If you meant as in design choices based on scales/bless, I'm putting in the build I showed before (with attack skill).

Indeed, any mage with 2 Earth Magic, and research Construction 4.  Dwarven Hammers are construction 2, but you need 3 Earth.

Ulm is good at making stuff.  They get discounts.  I will still pay full price, though.

Moe, are you going after Nazca right now? It looks like we're in a pretty good position to pincer attack them between the two of us if you wanted to go ahead. I can have a decent fighting force for it out of my capital in another turn or two.

That army is just sitting around while a fort is being built.  It's not very strong.  Most of my new stuff is going north to push back a C'Tis army, and then after to fill out my own expansion. 

The fort has 2 more months.  I can probably pressure Nazca two months after that.

I certainly wouldn't turn down tithes.  My expansion didn't go well and I'm already in a stalemate war with C'tis.  (No idea if the AI treats us as separate nations or not, though.)

I feel like the last turn went pretty well for the alliance of light and fire, what are current battle plans? I think Man and I should take out Ermor asap, then it looks like Yomi is going to be our next immediate threat.

Scelera is mighty spooky to the south though.

Yomi certainly seems to be devouring Ermor and is probably beating up C'tis as well.  Yomi, Sceleria, and Asphodel certainly look like the forerunners of our AI foes.

I certainly support squashing out Ermor.

I'm almost ready to send a big force with battlemage support to roll over C'tis.  Resources have prevented me from assembling much more than a defensive army in the south, so Marignan support on the Nazcan front will have to wait.

I have a feeling Sceleria is getting ready to roll on over into Pythian territory. The TRUE descendants of the Old Empire will be ready for them... as well the unrelenting firepower of the Thaumaturge Communion!

Awesome to hear that Armageddon players are into Dominions!  I haven't picked up Dominions 5 yet, but will look you guys up when I'm ready.  That game...It's best played Multiplayer!  What a 'One more Turn' feeling it gives.  Good luck with the Skeleton Wars!

Speaking of which..

There was an update to the game.  May need to see how it affected the game.

Love the bug fixes.  Awe finally affects trample, again.

There's also a new Nation!

Ediy: New Nation "Mekon."  EA.  It's basically Sparta with Giants that have a particular focus on "diecide," or "god-slaying."  Sparta mixed with an Inquisition.  Interesting mechanics.  No recruitable sacred troops.  +1 bonus to dominion conflict.  Giant troops have magic weaponry.  Fire, Air and Earth mages.  Forge Master Cyclopean mages.  Human slave armies that have the "promotion" attribute that allows them to change into a new type of unit when they gain enough experience.
