GOD FIIIIIIIGHT!!!!!

I figured we'd go in chronological order and start with early age.

Also, since some people may have been soured on getting knocked out early in FFA games, do we want to institute any metagame rules to push wars into mid/late-game?  Like mandatory 1-2 year starting truce?  Or a game with AI players and no human on human action until the AI's are dead?  3-way disciple game?  Co-op disciple game?
Title: Re: Dominions 5 - Multiplayer
Post by: Zoltan on November 27, 2017, 11:50:57 PM
Count me in as well. I'm not sure about the truce. The vagaries of a start could lead to someone's expansion being cut off with no risk if they're not allowed to fight back. Cutting someone off and bottling them up could be viewed as an act of aggression, even if no battles are fought. And if someone's cooped up in the start, they may be boned anyway. Though I'm more for FFA, I'm pretty ambivalent about the specifics and will agree to give a shot at whatever people want to try.

Ok so EA.

I prefer machiavellian FFA. Disciple games never seem as cool. I do propose we just sorta police ourselves and let the less experienced fight each other at first while us more experienced players beat ourselves to death on each other to give them a fighting chance.

Nothing binding of course.

Soon as this came out I logged in here to have a look, and whaddya know. All the usual suspects. :D

Definitely in. The new Bless system has me pondering the possibilities. Regenerating Undead with built-in MR whaaaaaat?

Larger maps maybe as a buffer to let people build up? That can lead to egregiously long games, though.
Title: Re: Dominions 5 - Multiplayer
Post by: Marauder Moe on November 28, 2017, 10:47:29 AM
Well, that's what the "cataclysm" option seems to be for.   :D

But yeah, I guess in the past I've aimed for the normal ~15 provinces per player maps.  We could do Large (20 per player) or Enormous (25 per player) to give more buffer, delay earlier wars, and make them more epic.

Also yes, gentleman's agreement to not "go for the throat" on the newbs is also an option.  Though I'm not entirely sure I know off the top of my head which of us counts as vets and which are newbs.

Anyway, looks like we're up to 5?

Post by: Zoltan on November 28, 2017, 11:32:53 AM
A slightly larger map with cataclysm on may do the trick.

I have no clue what nation I'm going to play. I'll try to narrow it down over the next day or so. :D

Is there a nation changelog anywhere?

I've been poking at EA Yomi.  It's very different now, and possibly not shit.  Can't recruit demon troops anymore, but they're random freespawns instead.  There's also a cool mechanic where your Yamanari "upgrade" via a pair of 6D/12D rituals.

Indy provinces seem a little more varied now.  Fewer "vanilla" provinces, more casters/elephants.
Title: Re: Dominions 5 - Multiplayer
Post by: Zoltan on November 28, 2017, 12:04:30 PM
I'm not familiar with any changelogs besides various community discussions. I do want to say that Yomi wasn't shit in Dom4, though. You just had to embrace the chaos is all and forget about having a standing army. :D That said, I really like these new changes as they enforce what I perceive to be the flavor of the nation. Another cool thing about the Yamanari I just noticed is that she doesn't require a fort to be recruited, which is potentially huge considering her gold cost.

They've improved the UI so much for the nation previews, but honestly, I'm still waiting on the mod inspector to come out. There still seems to be no way to preview magic items of any given path or Construction level. Also, you can't preview national summons, which is quite unfortunate.

I'd recommend giving at least a cursory glance over the manual.  There's plenty of things that are detailed and outlined in it that you don't necessarily get told during the game.

Cataclysm seems like a great compromise to keep the game time reasonable. 60 at most?

I think some of our games were still legitimately competitive at 5 years, but certainly most of them were lopsided or stale by the 7th.

In other news, there are some hidden shortcuts on the pretender creation screen.  Hit "?" for a list.  There's a deity randomizer and a spell list.

Don't worry, Dominions isn't really a binge game.

That said, if I put up the server today would you all be willing to kick off the game on, say, Friday?

Sent out server info.  If you guys who know anyone who's cool and will play reliably, feel free to pass the info on.  Let me know, though, so I know how many we're expecting.  I've invited two friends to play, but not sure if either will.

If you want to claim a nation but are still working on a god, please submit a placeholder so the nation shows up as taken on the server.

Does going to build in the same province not give an option to do so? Think that's how it worked in dom4.

Might mess around with Rus in single player tonight and switch if I like them. Assuming the game hasn't started already.

Anyone figure out how to upgrade a fort? I'm having a bit of trouble with that.

There's only two levels of fort in EA, excepting some nations.

You upgrade by building the fort one more time after establishing a palisade.

There's no more individual building upgrades.

It is not too late to join in!

I don't think there's any real threat of strategy leaking.  While we have some competitive players I don't think this is really a competitive game.  I think plenty of people are happy to offer pretender and game advice for new players.

I'd like to kick things off this afternoon, maybe 5:00 EST?  But I think we're still missing one god (two if Val decides to play).

You should play. After all, the strategy I told you is totally UNSTOPPABLE anyway. :V

I figure that with the number of players we're getting, and the fact that we want to have a more easy going first year, that we'll be going with a random map this time? My tests in Peliwyr sometimes feel a little crowded, and that's even missing two of the potential players.

Awesome. I can't have things made up by 5 pm because I have work/social obligations, but I can definitely have you something by midnight since I don't need to do all the pesky play testing (whee! I have no idea what I'm doing!).

I'm willing to wait to get more players.

And yeah, I was going to do a random map.  They said they put a fair amount of work into it for this version.  So far it does seem like it's better at making more interesting/strategic terrain than Dom4.
Title: Re: Dominions 5 - Multiplayer
Post by: Pale Horse on December 01, 2017, 12:42:15 PM
I have zero issues with waiting!

And to add my own voice to everyone else's, don't feel like you're jumping into a competitive gaming atmosphere were everyone is going to mock, pile on the newb, or feel like the introduction of a newb would ruin other's fun, Val.  I'm going to admit that compared to many of our others players in this group, I suck and am usually one of the first to be knocked out of play but I have fun (even while I'm loosing) while I'm in.

Another QoL feature in Dom 5 that I quite like:

Your Pretender finally takes advantage of it's own blessing effects.

Edit: Another little tid-bit.  When you go to forge an item or cast a spell, there's not this little tick box in the upper right corner of the menu that says "monthly forging" or "monthly casting."

If you're on the left island, there's is a land link to the mainland (look for the line of solid yellow dots).  Though, after that there's a throne in your way, heh.  Could be good or could be bad.

If you're on the other island, that's indeed a shitty start and we should re-gen.

What Moe said, let us know soon so we know whether to restart or not.

Title: Re: Dominions 5 - Multiplayer
Post by: Zoltan on December 02, 2017, 04:30:49 PM
Seconding regen/restart if someone's trapped on an island. I think if you use the map-making tool, it gives you the option to have no stand-alone islands. It may be the simplest thing to do to prevent this sort of thing from happening. Another option is previewing the map in the editor before hand and manually setting any stand-alone islands as no-start provinces.

Also, if we restart, can we consider putting a generous turn timer on? I'm not really concerned with how long it is (as long as it's over 24 hours), but it's been my (limited) experience that timers tend to keep a game moving whereas a lack of timer can lead to turn-bullying or the game dying.

You have a land link on the northern section of your island...as I see someone else pointed out before me.

Getting "stuck" on an island can be good or bad, depending on how things go.  You do have the benefit of a natural choke point.

Just a heads up, there appears to be a bug where cavalry with standard lances keep the lance after the first hit. I saw that happening tonight when I was playing some SP. This probably explains why heavy cav seems even more absurdly deadly in this game. You can confirm the bug by viewing a cavalry unit's battle log and seeing that they use the lance in every attack.
Title: Re: Dominions 5 - Multiplayer
Post by: Marauder Moe on December 03, 2017, 10:09:27 PM
I thought lances could be used any round in battle but they got bonuses on first attack.

I think I've seen some cavalry that only have a lance.
Title: Re: Dominions 5 - Multiplayer
Post by: Zoltan on December 04, 2017, 12:30:51 AM
Yeah, there are classes of light lances that are used throughout the entire battle. For example, Caelum has them, and my light cav in Sauromatia have them. But heavy cavalry and other knights have a lance that states in its stats that it can only be used once. The lance is "shattered" and the unit goes on using a sword or whatever, and usually the horse's own hoof. Light cavalry with the perma-lances typically only have the perma-lance. (In fact, that general rule is a major contributor to why my Oioropata are special: they have light-cavalry-ish speed and a light lance, but also their mount has a bite attack).

I haven't confirmed if all types of lances do indeed only add the charge bonus on the first attack, as intended. I'm pretty sure that's the case since lance fliers and cav would be absolutely ridiculous if they had the bonus on every attack.

Title: Re: Dominions 5 - Multiplayer
Post by: Marauder Moe on December 04, 2017, 04:03:45 PM
Short answer: No

Long answer: Your best bet is combing through this forum http://z7.invisionfree.com/Dom3mods/index.php?act=idx  Lots of Dom4 stuff is still applicable to Dom5.  Some Dom3 stuff is still applicable.  Not a lot has been tested and verified good strategies for Dom5, though, since the game just came out.

Longer answer: There are a few categories of pretender designs, though.
Awake Expander - A monstrous "awake" pretender designed to be able to conquering independent provinces by itself early game.  These designs typically need to include some sort of extra defensive mechanisms like regeneration, recuperation, and/or awe or else your god will accumulate wounds and eventually become useless.
Major Bless - In Dom4, the most powerful bless effects still functioned before the pretender has spawned (dormant/imprisoned).  In Dom5, most of them are "incarnate" blesses where the pretender must be spawned and alive to function.  This means in order to have multiple powerful bless effects you'll need to sacrifice scales in order to afford the pretender as "awake"
Rainbow - This pretender, usually one of the human(oid) mage bodies, has a lot of different magic paths at low (1-4) levels.  They can be used for walking around your territory and searching for magic sites and/or crafting a wide variety of magic items to support your commanders.
Scales - This pretender is usually set as dormant/imprisoned and/or has low magic paths in order to afford high nation scales (Order 3, Production 3, Growth 3).  This is for an empire focusing more on troops/armies than casting powerful, high-path, end-game spells.

Most "competitive" pretenders will be one of those categories.  However, the game is perfectly playable with a general purpose pretender or even one you just think is cool.  Being new, it's probably best to have fun and experiment rather than worry about optimal builds.  That said, if there's a particular nation that interests you I imagine all your GDB Dominions players would be happy to provide tips.
Title: Re: Dominions 5 - Multiplayer
Post by: racurtne on December 04, 2017, 04:10:10 PM
With the new way pretenders are built, I think mixed strategies are much more viable.

But yea, if you want to learn basics the onky advice for nation choice I have is don't do blood first thing.

Once you get a handle on the mechanics, blood is more doable. It involves a lot of micro and doing it right is tough.

Inks is very experienced in blood magic though so if you want to learn it, he is a good one to ask.

Oh yeah, blood...

Man I have untold hours in this game and I still don't quite understand how to run a blood empire, lol.

I learned blood the easiest by playing EA Mictlan. You have solid sacreds and troops that get the job done. You NEED to use blood sacrifice to survive, which teaches you how to get a blood economy going by necessity. It's not a side thing for them, which also helps a lot. You have good N mages that can do things like summon up wolves for patrolling blood hunt provinces.

Finally, Mictlan has some good sacred blood summons (Ozelotls are the biggie) that further incentivize getting your blood economy going and showing you just how ridiculous it can get.

Blood is often a side flavor for nations, and I think that makes it trickier to learn on them. Blood is awesome for Sauromatia, for example, but I wouldn't recommend it over Mictlan as a learning experience by any means.

Also mictlan has slave freespawn which makes patrolling to keep unrest down a breeze.

I play blood nations quite a bit and if you want to get a handle of the game I wouldn't recommend it to start with, the micro is real.

So apparently trying to play a turn when your version is newer crashes the server.   ::)

Server is now updated to 5.06.  Whoever most recently tried to do a turn should check to see if it got in or not (I suspect not).

That was probably me. Fortunately, my turn seemed to have saved. I double-checked everything, of course. :D

I had a madman join. He was armed with a cod and tried to site search despite not having any magic paths. So I had him "site search" an indy throne to see what was there, and he tragically died by not following his order to GTFO when the enemy army showed up. I figured he'd die in the retreat phase, not ineptly flailing on the battlefield. Still, in the end he served No Step on Snek well.

So unfortunately I'll be away from a Dominions-capable computer for something of a long weekend.

I don't really want to hold everyone up, and I think I set up some auto-recruits, so feel free to just force my turns if that's possible.

Apologies for the delay!

I've always been OK with not doing turns on the weekends.  You shouldn't have to sacrifice social lives or family visits for a game.  I'm happy to just wait.

Post by: Marauder Moe on January 11, 2018, 01:40:07 PM
I hate to do so, but I'm coming around to the idea of setting up a turn timer for both games.

There's two main options for this:

Turn interval (48 hours?) with timer paused on certain days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday).  If everyone gets turns in early the game will resolve the turn and restart the interval timer.

Process turns on specific days, no quick-host, for a predictable schedule. (Monday, Wednesday, Friday evening).

Thoughts?

I'm going to go ahead and AI.

Ulm Yomi and Sauromantia are in Coalition. They're likely sharing resources including research boosters with Ulm being their forger.

Two fully equipped SC Dai Oni's (Conjuration 8 ) are on the field and will require some surgical anti thuggery to take out.

Wat. There's no possible way someone is at Conj 8 already.

Rephaite Warriors with Quickness make me cry myself to sleep.

I know it sucks to be knocked out early, but it's a FFA game.  It's going to happen to someone.  There will certainly be other games of Dom5.

If it's any consolation, Inky, most of your assumptions are incorrect.
Title: Re: Dominions 5 - Multiplayer
Post by: Inky on January 13, 2018, 01:41:57 PM
Well I wasn't sure at first but Ulm's cute attempt to get me to drop my guard seems pretty suspect.

And secondly I have no idea how Yomi could be pulling out Dai Onis without someone else's cooperation.

Title: Re: Dominions 5 - Multiplayer
Post by: Zoltan on January 13, 2018, 09:30:59 PM
There's no coalition, though I did exhort people to go after you after your vicious sneak attack on me. Imagine my amusement when Yomi and Ulm's own sneak attack (unrelated to my indignant calls to arms) commenced right when you came at me. :D

Yomi's going to be quite large indeed if they get the lion's share of Ermor's lands, which I suspect they will. The F gems they will probably end up securing from Ermor's cap will help with End of Culture, I'm sure. Marverni is pretty big and bad, too, and seems to be doing well against Helheim from what I can tell.

In all honesty, though, if Ermor hadn't attacked me, I probably would have attacked them. >_> It's rough to be in the middle.
