Title: I Want YOU to Create Some Jewelry and Flutes (or, well, instruments in general)!
Post by: Cayuga on June 27, 2016, 06:28:30 PM
We are severely lacking in jewelry crafts for quite a few stones, particularly the following:

beryl - Small and shaft-like, this chunk of clear beryl appears to have broken
off a much larger piece of stone, its tip a slanted point while the end is
jagged, rough and riddled in cracks and crags.  Darker at the butt-end, the
bluish-green, quartz-like stone steadily lightens to a brilliant aquamarine
at the angled tip.

sunstone - Small and angular, this somewhat clear chunk of crystal has a coppery,
almost peachy tone to it, the core darker then the lighter edges which look
sheared and cracked.

lavender aventurine - Angular edges of rough, unworked crystal sheath a deep, pinkish-purple
core in a soft, muted lavender hue.  The surface is riddled in crags, cracks
and fissures, having the appearance of broken free from a much larger piece.

peridot - This small bit of peridot possesses a surface rough and mottled in crags
and cracks, colored a dusty, milky brownish-green.  Glimpses of the dark,
olive-green gemstone within flash through chips and fissures, exposing its
potential. (Has polish craft)

citrine - Small and unpolished, this piece of gemstone has a murky, yellow-white
surface that is rough and striated in flecks and bands of clear,
golden-brown citrine within. (Has polish craft)

lapis lazuli - Small and rough-looking, this piece of rocky gemstone is a blue as dark
and deep as midnight, solid and mottled in silvery and golden specks and
striations.

topaz - This small, crystalline stone is unpolished and rough, but shows inner
glimmers of yellow light. (Has polish craft.)

diamond - Grey, rough, and shard-like, this small chunk of unworked diamond is no
bigger then a songbird's egg.  Murky in clarity, the gemstone is chipped,
cracked and jagged.

ruby - This small piece of unworked ruby is rough, jagged, and colored a murky,
milky red.  Its shape is irregular and no bigger then a small bird's egg,
riddled in chips and fissures which reveal the blood-red core within.

emerald - This small piece of unworked emerald is rough and jagged, looking to have
broken free from a larger piece of stone.  It is no bigger then a small
bird's egg and vaguely oblong.  Through tiny chips and fissures, a deep,
green core can be seen.

sapphire - This rough piece of sapphire is a deep hue of blue.  Roughly cut, it
doesn't appear to have been processed as of yet.  It is fairly small, about
the size of a large nut.  A bit of dirt is encrusted on one side of it,
further detracting from the untapped beauty of the gem.

opal - Rough and unpolished, this piece of opal is a deep sable with hinting
hues of blue and red shimmering along the edges.  The surface is dusty and
grainy to the touch.

tourmaline - Small and shaped similar to a miniature obelisk with four flat sides and
a natural taper which terminates in an off-kilter point.  The end is rough
and jagged, looking to have broken free of a larger piece.  While clear and
striated in faint cracks and chips, the quartz appears banded in a variety
of colors from red to violet, green, gold, blue and brown.

spinel - A milky, rough surface sheaths this small piece of raw spinel, flecks of
violet, pink and mauve showing through cracks and chips which mar it,
revealing the gemstone within.

shard of moss-green agate - This small, roughly-edged piece of moss-green agate is striated
in veins of darker green and flecks of brown, looking to have broken off a much larger
piece of agate.

a small polished garnet - This bit of garnet has been polished to a glossy luster, bringing out
its deep, reddish-hue. It is uncut, though the gem is quite hard.

rough bit of carnelian - Crude and unpolished, this small stone is a deep red in color and less
than an inch in diameter.

smoky quartz crystal - This length of quartz runs about a half a cord long.  The cross-section
of the quartz would be that of a near perfect hexagon, all six sides roughly
equal.  Near both ends however, the crystal tapers to rough points.  A dark
impurity taints the clear crystal, giving it a dark, smoke-colored hue.

a small, translucent stone - Fitting nicely in the palm of your hand, the lines of your flesh are
magnified in the light red stone.

a hand-sized chunk of dark stone (basalt) - This chunk of dark stone fits comfortably in the average human palm, and
bears jagged edges in some places, and smooth almost glass-like contours in
others.  Its color is a mix between black and grey, with many tiny flecks of
indeterminable colored sand and stones glittering within its surface.

translucent blue stone (chalcedony) - This small stone is a pale blue in color, its surface glassy
and smooth.

In regard to the above gemstones, we request that you submit simpler items, though middling level fanciness is alright: we don't want these to be mastercraft, Tektolnes-or-Muk-Utep-would-wear-grand.

Next, we need instruments: all types of instruments, of any medium. With the closing of Tuluk and the disappearance of other clans IG, there has been a lack in available instruments for characters to pursue musical careers with. Again, we don't want anything so fabulous as to be gifted to a Masterbard by Muk Utep himself, or to a senior Whatist by the Highlord, but low end to medium-high end items would be fabulous! Be creative with this one - and maybe we'll even approve instruments that are culturally appropriate but aren't currently in game. Smiley

I'd love to submit some jewelry to you.  Is there any way we can get an idea of what the stones look like?  Not that googling topaz is hard, I'm just curious what the IG versions look like in terms of color and clarity in the rough stone's mdesc.  If that's too much work, it's fine!

Difficulty is just at what level of the skill you think the item should be made.

Tool? I can take care of that.

Price is something I can take care of too. It's usually just what the raw materials cost, combined together. :)

They don't exist for each stone. It isn't a necessity. To be fair, when I think of the crafts in game, a lot of them use the unpolished stones and I just assume they are being polished in the duration of the craft. :)

Is there a deadline for this?  Or is this one of those things where sooner is better because you're likely to get three dozen submissions from a few people and that'll be that?
Also, can we lump more than one submission into the same request?  It'll end up being a lengthy request, but I think that's preferable to having a dozen separate requests all from the same person?
Title: Re: I Want YOU to Create Some Jewelry and Flutes (or, well, instruments in general)!

It's fine to put all the crafts together into one big submission! No deadline, not yet. The sooner the better, but I like to build and put crafts through, so you have a pretty good chunk of time to write all these up. Also, if you have some sort of vendetta or hatred of Nergal, this is your opportunity to get him back, because he has to approve all the objects and crafts I make to make them official, live, and in game. ;)

If you list a tool, will someone have to have that tool on hand to do the craft or is that just what will help with the craft?

It requires the tool be 'used', as in, shows up in equipment. :)

This has been touched on, but I'd like to clarify - is it okay to submit polish crafts for the stones that don't have one? For use in further crafts?

Confession: I had a character that collected gemstones, and it drove the OCD part of me crazy that they couldn't have the polished versions of every gemstone  8)

If you want to, you could. I guess this might be a little awkward, however, considering some of the crafts will require unpolished, and some will require polished. But, hey. Crafting's never been easy, am I right?! ;)

If you can provide crafts for the polished stones, too, that'd be even better. And we'll still consider the stones that are 'glossy' in the main descriptions of the crafts that don't require the polished stones to have been polished in the process of creating their piece.

Not sure if this will be helpful to anyone, but I thought I'd toss it up here anyhow.
For the stones that can be polished, if anyone is wanting to use those in their recipes, the sdescs for them are:

- a polished, olive-green peridot
- a bit of deep-orange citrine
- a small polished topaz
- a tiny, finely-polished diamond
- a small, finely-polished emerald
- a polished opal

And I can't recall for certain right now, but I think:
- a small, finely-polished ruby

I'm drawing a blank on what spinel is after it's polished, but I think it's something like 'a polished, violet-cored spinel'.

I know it probably doesn't really matter for these submissions, but when I make crafts/mastercrafts I write them up with the exact sdescs to make things easier for the staff working on them.
Just thought I'd stick these up in case someone else was wanting the exact sdescs for their submissions.

Maybe if someone does submit polished stones, they should note it, so that Cayuga isn't flooded with 12 different polished stone versions?  Then again, having multiple to pick from wouldn't be bad necessarily.

Moonstone has a bead craft.  And I always thought there was an opal one...though I never confirmed it.
It's not so obvious, like "a set of moonstone beads" or "a set of sunstone beads" but I assumed the item Delirium is referring to is essentially opal beads.

That being said! Please submit these to a GMH house. If you do not specify a clan, I can't resolve the requests. This was an oversight on my part. Thank you!

A suggestion:

More bracelets and pendants and other jewelry oddities, less in the way of earrings or rings - though I'll still accept them, particularly if they're not lavender aventurine or lapis.

Also, instruments.

There's a particularly badass one.

Good to know on the jewelry update... I have some interesting ideas for jewelry. I'll set myself a deadline of wednesday to turn in all I get done by then and add to it later if the call's still open or I feel I can do more.

I dunno, but I do know one of the instruments I already have written up is a rain stick, which I renamed something that's not so... nonzalanthan looking, because the instrument itself (cactus and dried beans), strikes me as very zalanthan.

Banjos almost certainly came from the African 'mbanza.' So it's not as inappropriate as you might think, but I'd prefer to see something closer to the mbanza than the modern banjo.

Seems more legit coming from Beethoven though, instead of someone with a forest fairy avatar.  Heh.

Since there are several posts against banjos, I'm not going to specifically quote any, but consider this.

We have violins. Like, ingame. Do you really think violins are any more desert wasteland with killer forest material than a banjo? Personally I'd think the banjo fit even better.

Actually I see traditional, hand made banjos all the time where I work, where they are often played. So they are still quite modern, even though they are not western. Some are banjo like, others are more like a kora. West Africans made them in America as well, when they were brought over. Banjos were easy to make as they are very low tech and can be made with about anything. They made a move from being a "tribal" instrument at that time, simply because Americans listened to them.

Are banjos really fitting to the setting?

We have guitars, violins and mandolins in game already. If a guitar is not inappropriate I hardly see why a crude banjo would be, seeing as they are much more low tech than a guitar.

There's reference of them made with bamboo on wikipedia - to make one, it'd have to have some resonance when plucked. Flexible metal would be ideal but you could probably produce some kind of mouth-drum, where a round wooden frame has some kind of tough but paper-thin skin stretched tightly across it, and a tongue attached to a peg on one edge. Then when you press the frame over your mouth, and "pluck" the tongue, it'd bounce against the skin, and your lip movements would create the resonance. It wouldn't make the "sproing" sound that a jaw harp makes though. It'd be very definitely a percussion sound.

There are/were mouth bows sold in the game.

Just because something is in the game doesn't mean it's fitting to the setting. We had katanas and sandwiches. I personally don't make bards that play guitars or violins, because I don't like seeing them perpetuated. But -- To each their own. That's just a personal preference and I shouldn't make it a habit to yuck someone else's yummy.

Has anyone sent in a mouth banjo? Is it possible to make those from non-metal materials?

And while a non metal mouth bow or mouth banjo or mouth harp wouldn't make the same sound, mouth bows produce the same effect. It basically turns your mouth into the 'bowl' of an instrument, and you push air through with your breath, and the bow string (even of an actual hunting bow) makes the percussive 'wave' that moves around the air, producing the tone.

I am immensely curious what makes a sandwich unfeasible in Zalanthas, but it's not for this thread.

After the onslaught of the first submissions, which stones are still underrepresented?
I imagine there's a zillion lapis lazuli and sunstone options, but what stones are still needing some love?

I updated the OP. The only thing we've received a ton of submissions for has been lapis lazuli. Admittedly, however, it is a beautiful stone, so I understand the allure.

I added a couple of stones, and struck through the lapis for reference. Go, go! Be ambitious.

To sweeten the pot, too, in case people were waffling about this: there is a karma point for contributions, and if you do enough of the calls when they're posted, you might be eligible!

You are perfect. You should make more because... moss agate needs love. All of the gems do, to be quite honest.

Unless it's lapis. Don't do lapis, unless it's... only one craft. :)

There...despite struggles with the request tool, I got a few sent.  Agate got some love, so did peridot (x2) and beryl and citrine.

Fun facts:
Scientifically, ruby and sapphire are the same stone.  They are both the mineral corundum.  Red corundum are called rubies, while all others are sapphires, which actually vary in colour (not all blue).  Essentially a ruby is just a red sapphire.

Emerald and beryl are the same stone.  When beryl has trace amounts of chromium or vanadium in it, it becomes green and we call it an emerald.

Some ideas for jewelry pieces that are not rings or earrings: combs, hair beads, ear cuffs, necklaces, pendants, chokers, brooches, bracelets, armlets, anklets, eyebrow rings, nose rings, cuff links, jeweled epaulets...

I'll probably do a few more at some point today.  I'm struggling with instrument ideas, but they're percolating around.

What of handflowers/slave bracelets? (aka a bracelet and ring connected by a chain) - I'd want it to basically be done as a pair of handflowers worn on <hands> but if it's doable, whatever wear slot would work best could be the one they're put on instead. I just know those are awesome and I don't see a lot of them. (Don't think I've seen any, actually) but I think would work well.

Just out of curiosity Cayuga, would that sort of thing be worn on the wrist or on hands?  Something can't take more than one wear location, right?  So even though it consists of at least one ring, and it partially covers the hand and then has a bracelet portion around the wrist, it could only codedly be worn in one spot...but which spot?  Hmm... *ponder*

I definitely wouldn't want to call them slave bracelets in the item name but maybe handflowers. The description should make it obvious what they are, I just know IRL the slave bracelets name seems as popular or more popular than handflower (though both are acceptable)... sorta like the rain stick I wrote, I called a 'cactus rattle', because rain stick felt wrong but the instrument felt right with its design and materials, for the setting but less so its name?

@manipura I like the idea of them being hands wear slot, because I imagine that the design of the jewelry would make wear of other things on the hand (like gloves) impossible or very hard, while not making it hard to wear other rings or bracelets?

That was my thinking too.  Though it covers three locations, you could still wear another bracelet fairly easily while gloves wouldn't be very practical.  I vote for that sort of thing being a hand item.  I'm not sure about the name though, handflower.  It sounds very neat, but is it a good fit for the setting?  In Indian culture I think they refer to them as panja bracelets. *more pondering*

on looking up more names for it, 'thong bracelet' 'harem bracelet' and 'belly dancer bracelet' also come up. Really I think the problem lies in the fact that there doesn't seem to be an actual technical name for the things. I favor hand flower and thong bracelet, because belly dancer bracelet and harem bracelet are really narrow and not necessarily right for the flavor, but I'm not a fan of panja bracelet because it's so tied to a specific culture, where hand flower would be more descriptive of appearance for common design, and thong bracelet would be more 'technically' accurate. >.> Either way, all I actually have complete is instruments, so this evening I've got a shitload of writing to do.

I approve of the name choices, but would like to point out that numerous items in Zalanthas are based on very specific items used primarily by desert based cultures. There are a lot of clothes you aren't likely to see outside of an Islamic culture, for example.

I'm not making these, but I wanted to help since I think handflower is too vague but the idea is thematically fitting and inventive.

So maybe...

a ruby-set bracelet and ring linked by chains

or opal. Those are good because they're short gem names.

an chain-fettered bracelet and ring of dark opal

Too fancy, I guess. That would have to be a MASSIVE opal to make a bracelet from it, but as long as I'm playing a fantasy game... I also just decided those opals should be dark. Fire opals are cool, too.

a ring chain-linked to a beryl-set bracelet

a braid-linked leather bracelet and ring
a braid-tethered ring and bracelet of bright thread

(these last two could have shards of gems worked into them in the mdesc so they's still fit the item call)

I kind've forget how long sdescs are as a general rule. I think there's some standard so we don't get line wrap. Go ahead and use these sdescs if one of them seems just right or change them up to suit. I have enough on my list and I'm not going to be making these.

Cayuga - could you take a look quick and tell us about how long an sdesc can safely be before we get line wrap?

I plan to get 1 finished for all the semiprecious stones (lapis too, if that's unneeded, it can just not be used, but I love lapis) - but not for ruby, diamond, or emerald. :D

I'd probably go with something more like 'a <thing, thing> set of thong bracelets' since hands defaults to both hands, so you don't wind up with something like 1 armlet on 2 arms. >.>

This is great! I was thinking as wrist wearable, but on hands would be gorgeous. I have a hard time holding back from stuffing in adjectives and then I couldn't figure out how to make them a pair or set without trashing some so I gave up.

RE: Handflowers -

I personally love this idea, but it is miffy that we can't have 1 item/multi-slots.  So I came up with a wee idea.
You can have a craft produce multiple results.  If you go this route, you could have 2 identical items worn, one on wrist one on finger, from the same single craft... which admittedly is cludgy, but it might work.

craft turd sunstone into gwb handflower

Your dilligent work produces a turd-studded George Walker Bush handflower

>i
a pair of turd-studded George Walker Bush handflowers

That way at least it will look matchish, even if it is a cludgy way to do it.

Also... sorry if this was already covered in previous posts.  I don't know how to read.

I actually liked that it left you free to wear more bracelets as the archetypes of pcs I know of who seem most likely to wear them WOULD be decked down w/more bracelets, so I still favor the hand slot, and basically just making it a set of them as opposed to one. Then, I'm the type of player who'd rather see 'ears' than 'left ear' and 'right ear' slots, then having most pairs of earrings just be 'on ears' so you could wear 2 sets of earrings but not have it be 4 lines. Ultimately I guess the wearslots are something cayuga will probably change up if the hands one isn't really 'the best', but it's the one I personally favor, for the logic that it literally covers the back of the hands like tuluki hand tattoos, and it would be difficult to imosible to wear gloves with them.

I think Norcal is thinking of chalcedony which only has a couple crafts and probably should be included in this too, if we're still adding unloved stones to the list.

In game it's called 'a translucent blue stone' and (I think) you only see it's actual name when you examine one of the couple items made from it.

Cayuga, if we can add this stone to the list, I'll absolutely write up a few items for it in the next couple days.  I love this stone, it's probably my favourite one in game.

I had no idea that that was chalcedony in game. I'll add that to the list.

And, BadSkeelz, your characters are always naked, anyway. This won't deceive anyone. ;)

At least I'm kind enough to still use tdesc for dongs, and only after consent!

I actually am kind of looking forward to these things. Playing characters who believe in "portable wealth" who wrap their worth up in jewelry, weapons, and other wearable items - as opposed to lugging a bunch of coins around - is one of my little minigames.

I don't think it's a terrible idea. Every culture in the history of man has had some sort of jewelry to indicate rank, creativity, or otherwise. I think it's a neat study on the human condition.

Oh! I agree  ;D Sorry. My choice of words was a little strange. everyone is going to be wearing completely different things. Finally more than -Insert stone here- ivory stud, or -mundane gem- set horn ring. Super awesome.

I plan to wear a new craft on every single toe, finger, ear, eyebrow and nose slot and see how long it takes anyone to figure out that's all I'm wearing.

Toe slots should be hidden by shoes, so they're a dead giveaway, unless the staff has implemented sandals properly. Likewise for nipple rings - if anything shows up on the nipple ring slots, it means the person isn't wearing anything on the torso / around the body.

There is an item called "a black stone" in-game that has no apparent jewelrymaking or stonecrafting crafts. Shall it go onto the list as well? If so, I am prepared to write a few things for it.

Pretty sure they're dye stones.

That's correct.
And that dye stone (a smooth black stone) is craftable into one piece of jewelry.
There is a smooth white stone as well, which isn't used in any jewelry crafts.

Cayuga, I sent a few chalcedony items in.  I'm hoping to get another couple written up and submitted in the next few days.

the smooth white one is, yes, but it's with another ingredient, and only 1 to my knowledge.

Smooth white stones can make a dye, as can smooth black and rough white and white, yellow-veined ones.

The smooth black one is the only one out of the shebang that can be turned into jewelry with only the stone as an ingredient, to my knowledge. The rough black stone can be used for sling bullets, I believe (but, technically, can't most stones be turned into bullets?)? I remember it has a use somewhere but I can't remember what use. Either way, its definitely an item that finds its way into jewelry material bins but never into jewelry pieces themselves.

Consider this closed. I'll be working on all requests submitted that are still in the queue. If you've been working on things and still haven't submitted, please finish up your ideas and submit them.

Thank you.

I lost ~50 items to my own technological stupidity and didn't have the heart to re-write them. Sorry. :-[

I just wanted to let everyone know that we had over 200 items submitted and created. They were mostly jewelry, but there was a good pocket of instruments within. Thank you everyone for your hard work! Now, submit some Allanaki commoner clothing items!
