Title: IN THIS THREAD WE DRAW EVERY DAY IN JULY!
Post by: Fathi on July 01, 2008, 07:05:04 PM
In order to motivate myself to keep drawing and in celebration of the new scanner I'll be receiving on the 5th, I hereby dedicate this thread to be The Official Draw Every Freaking Day In July Thread.

Fellow artists, I'm calling you out, overachievers and slacker bastards alike (you know who you are, both of you).

The Rules:
1. Pieces must be new and each piece must be dated. Not that this will actually prevent cheating, but it'd be cool and uniform if we decide to throw these up on a website later or something.
2. Any medium and any talent level is accepted!
3. You don't have to make one post per day--I won't have my scanner 'til the 5th, so I'll be posting 5 then, etc. Just make sure you point out what's what in your posts!
4. Critique and commentary on other people's pictures is more than welcome, but if the artist says they'd rather refrain from getting serious critiques, please don't tear them a new one. This is a happy thread.

The Participants:
1. Fathi!
2. Biscuits!
3. Taven!
4. Ourla!
5. Grey Area!
6. Silverfaune!
7. Reiloth!

People whose names are in bold have posted submissions as of the 3rd.

You're the devil.  But sure, I'll give it a go.

---As long as we can draw whatever.  If I have to do a character portrait a day I'll die. ;)

I can't draw, but I'll be more than happy to shower unabashed praise on those who do.
Bonus points if the subject is Arm-related.

My piece that I'm doing for today is Arm-related. A redraw of a little sketch I did of a character that's been gone long enough it's okay to mention him, I think.

But I can't tell 'til I post the picture.

Added you, Taven.

When I first read the title I thought you were going to draw the days in July.  The days of July would be the subject of the drawings.  I can picture what the first and the fourth might look like, but what would July 15th look like?  How about the 23rd?

Oh well, I guess now I will never know.

To contribute, here are some boobies for Ghost:

For your picture, Ourla, I would only suggest that you watch your tangents.  They tend to flatten images.

Ahem.  Just some random doodles from my head--wanted to make sure I got at least SOMETHING drawn today.  Bah.

I drew over the tangent I'm talking about in green.  The lines from his mouth to his cig to his hair are merged together.  If you leave it like that, it'll make it look flatter.

I'm not very good at noticing tangents, but I noticed this one so I thought I'd point it out.

Okay, so this is kind of cheating...  but I started this drawing of the Bard's Barrel, uh two years ago or so, and never finished it...  its age shows, but I went ahead and cropped it and touched it up today.  (I worked until midnight so at least give me credit for throwing something down! :))

I really like that Bard's Barrel picture, Biscuits, do you draw using a tablet? It almost has an oil-looking quality which I find works really well with Armageddon-ish art.

Yep, I use a tablet and CS2.  Thank you.  I was tired of it sitting around and being unfinished, even though it's ancient.

Since I close again tonight, I'll just post a doodle that I started working on today but probably won't finish until tomorrow.

Really, I should add more than that, so - wow, you guys are awesome with the drawing. I should have entered this, but I've no scanner. Maybe it would get me back into drawing, though my stuff is all comic-bookish art.

I've taken commissions for them a time or two in the past, but generally, I don't bother charging unless somebody requests something outlandishly complex. If you don't mind low-quality scans and hand-drawn stencils, I'd be fine with giving it a go. :)

(The last request I got that qualified as 'outlandishly complex' was: "the symbol for pisces--a pair of fish swimming together but opposite one another and forming a circle, but I want the fish to be skeletons and there should be a yin-yang in the middle, but the yin-yang should be flames and water instead of black and white.")

You KNOW you rock. Admit it. Love it.

Draw more pretty things so people can gaze at them wistfully and wish they'd paid more attention during art class back in high school.

I agree.  In fact, I think those of us that can not draw a straight line without a geometry set and a laser level should start contributing our scribbles, just to punish them.  I bet it burns their eyes.

Just doodlies on the 4th...

Worked on that some more while my boyfriend played DnD.

This started as my Daja contest entry, but I never finished it.  I worked on it anyway a little bit yesterday.  I also worked on a character portrait but I don't have it uploaded right now.

So I got my scanner yesterday. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. But I did manage to scan at least a few days' worth of stuff after fixing somebody's computer...

01 July: Milan, old First Hunter of House Kadius from some time back. I don't know why it came out blue.

02 July: Lanais, Armageddon character.

03 July: Doodled some faces.

04 July: Hitchhiking 80s woman. I got ultra lazy on most of it and the awesome pattern I DID bother detailing on her leggings didn't scan for crap.

05 July: A quick doodle of my haircut that I drew with a fountain pen while riding in a moving vehicle. I do not recommend. I spent most of the 5th working on a much more awesome picture that I can't post here just yet.

Ha.  These are so cool to see.

I did this over the space of an hour or two with a brown Prismacolor 05 fine line marker and colored pencils, watching TV.  Windblown characters are fun.  It made me realize how much I pay attention to feet in art (and how bad I am at them).  When I see a drawing I like, I'll look down at the feet to see if the artist has the figure's weight distribution rendered okay and if the anatomy of the feet is believable. Then I envy them relentlessly.

Sweet... that's my favorite of the ones I've seen you post.  I really like the details like the arrows and dagger and other stuff... and the shading is cool.   Something about the shaping and proportioning of things makes it interesting to look at too.

Thanks!  Yeah, I do. I ordered mine from Amazon. My nicer tablet is a 6x8 Wacom Intuos but Vista doesn't like it and rarely recognizes it.  Strangely enough, it has no problem with my Wacom Graphire tablet (older, smaller model).  I use Photoshop CS2 to colour.

I was interested in purchasing one of these as an early Githmas present for myself. The prices vary widely, with yours falling somewhere on the middle to higher end. I would rather get something nice but on the cheap side to doodle on until I get the hang of it - any suggestions?

Well, the price varies on ebay but looks to be pretty cheap if you search for a wacom graphire (make sure if you get it from ebay that it has a stylus with it, hah, I saw a few advertised without one)--Amazon has a few good listings..

http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Graphire4-4x5-Tablet-Blue/dp/B000BBAL0W/ref=pd_bbs_sr_5?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1215520533&sr=8-5
http://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Graphire4-4x5-Tablet-Silver/dp/B000BBCTHU/ref=pd_bbs_sr_10?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1215520533&sr=8-10.

I remember my 4x6 graphire being between $80 and $160 when I first purchased it (six years ago, hah).  Honestly, the biggest difference I can notice between my intuos and graphire is that the intuos pen just FEELS better in your hand.  But maybe that's just because Vista hasn't let me use it in so long. :3  My tablet is such an old model I actually can't find it.

There's also the Bamboo

http://www.amazon.com/Bamboo-Small-Pen-Tablet-Only/dp/B000V9T2JA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1215521069&sr=1-1

But I can't vouch for it since I've never used it.

Thanks for those suggestions.  :)

I don't have a tablet anymore, but when I did, it was a Wacom Graphire 3 and I loved it to death. The 4x6 drawing area sounds small at first, but when you realise that you won't be confined in the same ways as you are with paper (i.e. that 4x6 area can be zoomed in or out on any size canvas so that it's representing a tiny 100px area of detail at 400% or you can make broad strokes on a 1200px canvas at 100% or 50%), it ends up being pretty much perfect. In fact, when I have used tablets that had a larger drawing surface, they felt too big in a lot of ways.

Also one thing that really sells Wacom models for me is the fact that they're just damn durable. I had my Graphire 3 from the time the model came out ('99 I believe, possibly 2000) and it held up through extensive use over a four or five year period.

If I still owned a computer capable of opening Photoshop or Opencanvas, I'd still be using it. I'm fairly sure those things last for at least 3/4 of forever. Last I heard the damn thing was still functional.

I have some sort of Wacom thing but not the slightest clue how to use it.

This may or may not help you as much as it helped me, but the way I taught myself how to do the basics was to scan in things I'd already drawn by hand and try to copy techniques I was using in my traditional art. Here's a quickie tutorial that might help you get a feel for the stylus and give you a good idea of some of the effects it can replicate.

1. Draw something like simple figure and either ink it or make sure you keep the lines crisp. Don't do any shading other than some basic crosshatching or none at all.
Shading you do with the pencil or pen now will look a little weird when merged with shading done via tablet. Some people like this look, but I always thought it looked a little incongruous.

2. Scan it into Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro or Gimp or Opencanvas or whatever, as long as it's a program that can handle layers.
Personally I really hate Painter, despite the fact that it's used by a ton of professionals. The interface just doesn't seem intuitive to me and I hate having to hunt around for tools and options.

3. Make a new layer over your first layer and set the mode to "multiply."
Now, anything you draw on this new layer will show up, but it won't cover your pretty linework. Sorta like a colouring book.

4. Pick yourself a round brush from your starter brushes.
The size of the brush you'll want will vary depending on the size of your drawing. When working with a 800x600 canvas, I'd go with 9px for shading, 4px for detail, and 2px for any REALLY fine lines. I'd start out with greyscale just 'cause it's easier than fucking with colours when you haven't gotten a feel for the brushes.

5. Set your brush opacity to 60-70% and your colour to a medium-to-dark grey of your choice.

6. Start to colour the sketch on your "multiply" layer the same way you would if you were colouring with a marker pen--multiple strokes to darken, varying pressures, etc.

Provided you use a similar pressure to what you'd use with a watercolour brush or a marker, these brush settings and the "multiply" setting on the layer -should- produce an effect similar to colouring on a sketch with watercolours or with high-quality marker pens.

I'm doing this all from memory, so if there's something I'm missing, maybe one of you folks more recently acquainted with a tablet can point it out. Either way, that's pretty much how I taught myself to use mine.

I just taught myself by drawing simple things until I got familiar with how it felt.

Though, I was 13/14 when I got my first one, so I basically learned how to draw (in general) on the tablet.  I don't even remember not having one.  :/

I don't have a problem with pretty 'rinthers. There's no real reason that one can't pop out of the alleys now and then. I do think that marring beauty with scars and such helps a plenty to create ambience assocciated with the 'rinth, though.

The picture is really good, but it seems as though her arms are ... really short. Aside from that one thing nagging me, I dig it in a House way.

Her arms are going backwards, bracing against a wall.. I hope to have that polished up so it's more evident that it's a perspective issue before it's done, cause at the moment it just looks like they're being held at a weird angle.

No, no, no.  See, she's a half-breed.  She has the legs of an elf, but the arms and upper torso of a human!   What?  It could happen.  Sometimes I give my halfbreeds that "assembled carelessly out of spare parts" disproportionate look on purpose, to make them more fugly and awkward looking.

I'd actually would be willing to put some time in perfecting my artistic ability. My brother-in-law is a wonderful artist and everytime we get together he just amazes me with his doodles and other drawings. We'll goto bars together and he'll do some bad ass doodle on the back of a coaster and impress the bartender which will in turn get us free drinks. Got to love it.

I don't think there's anything to 'get', if you can draw a line, then you can draw, it's really that simple.. Now where it might be that they start failing is perhaps their knowledge of anatomy is lacking, or their knowledge of perspective, or their light and shadow, or color, or form, etc.. Then you just have to focus on where your skills are lacking in, just like anything else..

I still think that anyone can draw if they put the time to do so, but I'm not here to argue about it :)

Mind you, I'm not saying that anyone can paint, now.. That's really something else.

I think I may be one of those people who just can't draw. Like, really, I think there's something wrong with my brain. I'm terrible at measurements and spacial thinking, so my proportions are always way off. I have terrible handwriting; every time a draw the letter 'E', it ends up looking different each time. As a result, my handwriting hasn't changed since kindergarten. It's still loopy and squiggly and random and unreadable.
This is a problem because the type of drawing I'm most interested in is comic-book style. If I can't draw two identical 'E's or 'N's, there's no way I could draw two identical faces.

How many hours do you spend a day trying to perfect your handwriting, then? Do you try to write down a bunch of E's and then try to copy the one you prefer over and over and over again daily?

I think it's just the same concept as playing a scale on guitar, at first it really sounds horrible, but you do it over and over and over again and one day you wake up and you're sweep picking that scale like a pro.

I disagree. The people you've seen try and try but never get it, aren't trying enough, or long enough. Handicaps and physical limitations aside, anyone anywhere can train themselves to draw, paint, sculpt, compose, or practice any one of the many artistic forms. It's a learned skill that for lots of people takes time. Lots of time. A lifetime for some, we're talking decades. They don't have the natural talent to turn into skill before they're even adults. But after 40 or 50 years of practicing that skill, gradually gaining an understanding of color and light and shape and shadow, making the time for trial and error and practice, practice, practice, they finally start to get it, and then they make some good art and die. It's probably one of the most subtly complex of human skills, and some of us just have a natural talent for it, but that doesn't mean everybody else can't simply learn - it's still human nature to be creative.

So for those of you who want to learn, don't be disheartened by decades of stick figures and less-than-stellar composition, or teenagers and 20-somethings with a natural talent that makes you hate the crap out of them.

I figured not many people carry my opinion, but I wasn't trying to discourage anyone or anything.  Maybe those people would get better after 40 or 50 years.

I think it's just that I get tired of, when I say that I can't sing, people telling me "Oh you can sing well if you practice, etc., etc." when I seriously suck.

Or maybe I'm just not an optimist. :3

Used to be, my mom couldn't carry a tune at all. However, she's worked hard for years and years, and now she can. She's even hired me to teach her vocal harmony lessons, and pretty often she can sing harmony with me and carry her own part while listening to mine. It's very unlikely that you suck more than my mom used to. Professional tutoring does help, of course...learning to sing or draw well entirely on one's own seems unlikely to happen, to me.

I wish I knew how to draw. You guys are all very talented.

Everyone knows how to draw, the difference is, are you willing to put the time required in perfecting your drawing skills?

And are you willing to spend the rest of your life looking at all art (and real life, for that matter) as a technician rather than just enjoying it as a regular (ignorant) person.  Will you be happier when you can't see the forest for the triangles, circles and squares that make it up?  Do you want to look at an amazing picture and see a picture, or would you rather see a series of techniques?

It may not happen for everyone, but for some people studying drawing, painting, sculpting, writing, dance, film, and other artistic endeavors can ruin their ability to simply enjoy them.  Once you learn to critically analyze art, you may not be able to turn it off.

Mmm, AP Art History was one of my favorite classes in high school. Also, believe it or not, it's probabyl the most challenging class I've ever taken (and I'm including the college classes I've taken so far in that assessment).
Also, in case I haven't said it yet, all the drawings posted in this thread totally rock. A challenge: I'd like to see some non-humanoid figures. Maybe somebody could draw a sunback lizard? Or a tembo? A scrab?
Come on, I dare ya.

You're a superstar, Ourla. My suggestions:

In retrospect, Malik's focus of taming a gortok could've used a little more planning.

"Hey, there. You're a cute little bugger. Oh, and you brought some friends!"

All Tulukis are polite. The impolite ones don't stay Tulukis for very long.

"Wezers? Aren't they a rock band?"

Amos was pretty new to scrab hunting, but his guide had an honest face.

Smirk.  It did come out looking like that.  It originally had a slinky kind of ferretlike body which was covered by the feathers and chopped off by the scanner.  I'd do some southern animals, but I don't know them very well and would probably get them woefully wrong if I tried to guess.

I haven't been drawing anywhere near everyday in July, but I have to say there's some awesome stuff people have been doing. I thought I'd throw in some "older" sketches, which are still in work. I need to pay more attention to anatomy, but they're interesting enough.

This guy needs his arm re-done, and a Gith stuck in there. There's some camera glare on his face, which I'd like to make better pronounced against his armor. I thought his armor turned out pretty well, where it's colored.

Southern Templar, she doesn't have a face yet. I had some fun playing around with robe styles.

http://img209.imageshack.us/my.php?image=inprogcd1.jpg

I'd like to wrap this guy around a 'Nakki cross sometime, or do something similar to that.

So after watching the Dark Knight, I really wanted to do something Batmanish, but I didn't feel like drawing the joker, batman, two-face, penguin, etc.  I always loved Harley Quinn's costume (and the animated series!  woo!), so I was going to draw her as what she'd look like in The Dark Knight, but then I figured she wouldn't transfer well at all, so I just started to draw Harley as good old Harl.  Still working on hands, feet, card, gun, background, etc.

I know it's stupid that I've had like the least number of posts in my own thread, but I'm kinda scanner and camera impaired right now.

Stuff I've been working on:

1. Feather-patterned tanktop, bleach stencil on 50/50 cotton/poly blend.
2. Sacred heart shirt, bleach stencil with bleach pen on 50/50 blend.
3. Elliott Brood "Acer Negundo" villainous moustache guy shirt design. Gonna try screen printing this one, acrylic with stencil on 100% cotton.
4. Unfinished conte portrait of an old guy I know.
5. Various Arm sketches, currently tinkering with Ceylara Borsail.

My favorite is the first, the second one is good too, but there is something about the first.

I haven't scanned anything in weeks, sorry.  I'm working on a character portrait that I got especially inspired on instead.  In the meantime, I give you zombie:

It's kind of old.  I'm cheating, I know.

So... I wanted to contribute something, but it took me all month to finally do something and what I did started as a doodle last night. I hate working in pen... you can't correct your mistakes, so the eyes are a little oversized, but give me a break... I took it from the reflection in my iPod screen.

Edit: haha... just realized that I was so tired last night that I dated it wrong.

Look out!  Those eyes look awfully almond-shaped to me.  She may be an elf!

Is your halfling take up, Ourla? Got a couple more halfling pieces coming up in a day or so too!

Rock on, I definitely want to see more.  This is the halfling I drew awhile back.  The large piece has some little hanging huts that looked almost exactly like yours (loved those, btw).

Just thought I'd toss this in here, since I remembered someone mentioning hanging spherical huts. Enjoy this link (http://www.inhabitat.com/2008/07/25/retreat-to-an-ewok-eco-spheres-in-trees/) for more Halfling-Hut inspiration!

Bitchy as it sounds, I really didn't want to know halflings live in hanging huts.

I found an old pencil of a character I've already drawn, but always felt I didn't do justice to.  I know the shading isn't great, but I do have fun with the crosshatching.  I miss you, Lt. Lukran. ;)

And this is the ink of a portrait I've been working on for awhile.  The colored version will be up in Submissions when the player and I decide on a title.

... Dear Lord.  I didn't look at this thread until now and it is incredible.  Oy.  You should all be so proud of your talents.  (I may have unintentionally ruined a scene because I was too busy gawking.  Sorry random person(s) who may or may not have been there.)

Please, please do this again for August.
