As it contains multiple people, we'd charge between $35 and $40 for that one - probably $35 based on the fact that only one of them is really "detailed" and is the focus of the piece. Prices are worked out in advance.

I doubt there's any commentary I could give other than stuff you've both already heard about fifty times.

But to potential customers, if you're curious just how detailed these things can get, this is just a preliminary speedpainting to see about getting somebody's facial features right:

How much for a detailed, accurate map of Zalanthas that nevertheless doesn't give away secrets, much like the maps on the website, except prettier, and done IC, as 'twere? (So, for example, made to look like 'twas drawn on old parchment, with native inks.)

Whose character, I think, was stoned in life more often than in the game.  :P

I have to say Agyras looks -pimp- in that pic. Definitely one of the most complete characters I ever had the pleasure of playing with. Great, emotional leader too. Hell, you were all badass though. Would be retarded of me to single out just one player since you all made a profound impression on me, for the better, might I add.

Thinking back to those days almost makes me want to log back in. Almost.

Uhm, so, to all you people in queue for portraits:

It's going to be a bit before I get back into doing them, namely until

1) We move into our new house
and
2) I find my tablet pencil :(

So, I'll get to whittling down the queue, it just might be a month or two before I do anymore Arm-related artwork.  :(

I'm enjoying my new house at the moment, so I haven't been too focused on portraits, heh.  Sorry, folks.  I'll get back on track soon.

I have an art question.

I suck at art, you are great at art.

I envy artists.

When I look at great art like yours I say..."Wow, that frickin' rocks...I WISH I could create something like that because it amazes the crap out of me".

I am not capable of creating beautiful art.

You are.

When you look at your own art, or other's great art...do you have that same.."WOW" feeling?

I think I have that "WOW" feeling because what I am viewing is beyond my abilities.

Where as you CAN do that, so when you see great art do you still go..."WOW".????

Just wondering.

Its like if I looked at a bird flying, I have a sense of awe about the ability to fly.

But Superman looking at the same bird would probably care less because he has the same ability.

Interesting correlation I know, but you get the picture.
Title: Re: Character Portraits
Post by: Malken on June 20, 2008, 02:54:25 PM
We look at birds and say, "Wow! They can fly."

Birds look at Superman and say, "Wow! Not only can he fly, but he flies around Earth at the speed of sound and shoot lasers from his eyes."

It's the same with artists, what you find amazing, they probably find average, and they look at the Masters and find them amazing.
Title: Re: Character Portraits
Post by: Fathi on June 20, 2008, 07:33:17 PM
Malken's right.

As an artist, I find myself continually wowed by the abilities of artists even on a similar level to my own, just because they can come up with things that I can't or haven't yet. Or do things in a way that I don't.

It's less of a, "Wow, I can paint, but I sure couldn't paint like <famous artist>!" and more of a feeling of, "Wow, I love the way that silly cartoonist friend of mine draws noses. They're so cute!"

I can't speak for everybody, but I'm just as impressed by the little things as I am the overall skill and detail of a piece.

(I really do wish I could draw noses like yours, sketchtacular-girl-who-will-remain-unnamed.)

When you look at your own art, or other's great art...do you have that same.."WOW" feeling?

All the time.  When everyone did their Meleth's Circle beggars, that feeling was prevalent...  I can't get away from it when I look through Biscuit's webpage.  She makes me rabidly jealous.  It happens occasionally with my own art, especially pieces I haven't looked at in awhile.  I'm constantly trying to incorporate techniques or styles from artists that I admire into my own drawings... a special way of rendering an eye, for example, or the time my twin sister taught me how to do shiny hair.  "WOW" makes the world go round.
Title: Re: Character Portraits
Post by: Silverfaune on June 20, 2008, 09:12:33 PM
I'm horrible for looking at other people's work and becoming insanely demoralized about my own work.  I'll look at someone with a radically different style, and wonder if I should try and change my own style, or I'll look at styles similar to my own and try to push myself to learn how to incorporate what I think makes their work more successful into my own work.  I'm my own worst critic... but occasionally I sit back and go.. wow.. that turned out neat!  Who knew!  And that keeps me going during those bouts of.. well, darker feelings.  Like comparing myself to my ex-classmate.  I found an interview with him in ImagineFX magazine and followed a link.. now I refuse to see his webpage again, lest I spend the rest of my days under a rock.
Title: Re: Character Portraits
Post by: Biscuits on June 20, 2008, 10:02:07 PM
I have a huge problem with looking back at the art I've created and thinking that it's shit.  I'm not fishing for compliments--I know it's not horrible or anything, but I know I'm capable of much more. When I browse through ConceptArt.org, I get depressed about my art a lot.  Especially right now, when I'm blocked. :(

I agree with what several others have said here: even when someone on the same skill level as me does a piece, I admire it because it's different than what I can do--and that makes it interesting.   Even though going to CA makes me jealous, I know that just looking at some of the artwork there has improved mine, because I always take away a little bit from everything I look at.

I can't remember the exact quote or who said it, but it was something to the effect that art is 10% creativity and 90% theft, and I really agree with that.
Title: Re: Character Portraits
Post by: Reissata on June 22, 2008, 02:32:46 PM
Most artists get a piece once in a while that they are absolutely proud of. We stick out our chest and say "I did that." Of course, as time goes on, and skills improve, we look at the same piece again and say "I did that?" At least that's what I do, and most of the artists I know.

For the most part, though, artists feel most of their work isn't "great", because whatever picture we had in our head before we started, wasn't exactly what ended up on paper. Or canvas. Or wood. Whatever.

There are some artists above our skills that we just can't help but to be in awe. Then there are some famous modern artists that make the wierdest craps ever. (ex: some guy that scribbles -- yes, scribbles; it's not an exaggeration -- over a canvas for hours and hours and hours and layer and layers and layers to create a big messy colorful...artwork. I say "WOW" to that when I think of how much he spent scribbling.)

The style really fits the theme and the subject matter--a scene like that really wouldn't be the same with a lot of polished, neat lines and it wouldn't have the same sense of motion, I think.

Not very many.  Every "normal person" I have ever created died rather quickly.  Ginka is awesome like that... survival of the fittest!

Quote
Mutations abound on the surface of Zalanthas, and many have gone so far as to become species in and of their own right, such as the deadly psionic gaj, the Thryzn who assisted in freeing the north, the animate cacti known as Thornwalkers, and the fierce insectoid kryl.

Humanoid races are similarly prone to mutations, whether they be humans, elves, dwarves, or one of the common racial mixtures. Most mutations are small: oddly colored eyes, a bald patch, strange coloration, elongated ears, etc. A few take a more drastic form: scaly arms, horns, extra or misplaced limbs, and a smaller handful are lethal.

There is a huge difference between constructive criticism and rudeness.

Your picture is looking great, Kiri.  I love his face most of all--the chin braids are awesome.  I think you could benefit from not relying on the smudge tool so much (it starts to make hard surfaces look like liquid) and mixing up your marks/textures.  I don't know your degree of experience in digital painting, but when I first started out I went craaaaaazy with the smudge tool.  ;)  You should consider taking figure drawing classes if they offer them in your area--they help you really see how the body works.

I actually enjoy the use of the smudge tool in this one.. I don't know if it was deliberate or not but it was used so often and consistently it just makes the piece look more painterly to me, rather than just overdoing a fun tool.

It was, actually, deliberate. I confess to getting to a point where I just wanted to be -done- and getting a little lazy. I decided to forego color after much experimentation and a few other opinions.

Hey, just wondering, who has a char portrait? I kinda like meeting people when they have a cool portrait.. it really sucks me into the world. Some building portraits would be cool too.

I've got an AWESOME one.  You can find it under the player submissions on the main site.  It's the Kadian doing what Kadian's do best.

Just so you know, these portraits generally aren't of living characters.  You're not really supposed to identify who you play, nor mention characters who have been alive in the last RL year.

I am a very visual person so I love being able to see someone's interpretation of what is essentially a block of text. It's also neat how those interpretations can differ so wildly depending on perception and style. For example, these are both of the same character:

I think it's a little bit hard to tell what's armor and what's not. I think he's wearing a breastplate/leather tunic for armor, but you could more clearly communicate that by raising it up slightly around the sleeves and the like, to sort of show some depth of material, so it sticks out better. I'd love to see some color on it, too.

Post an update, when you have one. :)

Something I personally always like to do is photocopy my work, and then color the photocopy. That way if I dislike the coloring job, or decide I want to try a different way, I can easily photocopy the origanal again and color it to my wishes.

To be honest, I'm a firm believer in learning the basics of anatomy--and drawing in general--before you start breaking shit down and drawing manga/anime.

If you learn how to do manga/anima before you learn the basics, it can be really hard to break the habit.  I'm speaking from experience here, fyi.

Alright, folks... I'm sorry to say that, despite extensive efforts to piece back together the list are a complete failure. The computer that had a catastrophic HDD failure had the database with customer information on it, so we lost the queue; the email that most of these were in has, also, since been shut down. As well, a great amount of time has passed since many of you requested portraits; it's only natural that many of you wouldn't even want them anymore, due to the PCs having died or become of less import, or due to financial difficulty, or whatever.

Therefore, anyone who -was- in the queue and is -still- interested in a portrait, please send me an email at OHSTArm@gmail.com, following the guidelines in the first post. If you know approximately when you made the request, that'll help us sort out who's first.

Thanks, and sorry again for the trouble.

I can open my queue for ten portraits after the middle of this month.  Alas, paying customers will take precedence over my faithful nonpaying customers.  Prices depend on complexity and materials, but a tight pencil sketch of your PC will be about fifteen bucks USD, and a full-color portrait is forty.  The first slot is filled already (you know who you are), so if you want to reserve a place on the list, go ahead and PM me.  Serious inquiries only, pretty please.

okay, just reposting again so everyone knows

we lost the list of people who wanted char portraits from last year
if you still want one and/or want a new character to be drawn, give me a pm and I'll give you my email!

*name and subtitle for the picture
*pictured scene, if you have one in mind
*character descriptions
*character EQ list, with as many items described as possible
*whatever else is included in the scene - descs of other PCs and their equipment, locations, so on and so forth.

Prices will be different for every portrait, since some will be more time-consuming than others.  Between $40 and $80 is what I imagine most will cost (no backgrounds=considerably less monies).  I will be done with finals on the 13th so I will have LOTS of time draw!  :)

Hello.

I do character portraits if anyone is interested. They go around $80 each (because of the amount of time spent on each one *phew*!).
I've never done one of an arm character before but if anyone is interested please email me at hamsterfurballs@gmail.com
These are just small examples, they are normally between 1000x2000  - 1500-3000 pixels

That is absolutely amazing, tinykitten. I just about fell off my chair.

I have a question: I have a character in Faery Tale Online who is quite a talented pencil artist. I, however, have no artistic talent whatsoever. What would you charge for a small series (say 5) of simple, pencil / charcoal only sketches based on ingame situations the character drew up? Also, would you be okay with a publication in the FTO storybook?

An example of what I consider a simple charcoal sketch: http://artfinale.deviantart.com/art/Charcoal-Sketch-1-114489711 (http://artfinale.deviantart.com/art/Charcoal-Sketch-1-114489711)

I would if I could find some digital copies of it.  My last copies of stuff I had on deviant art aren't there any longer...

but, here is one I did for Lord Tor that I finished up and delivered to him.  It was unfinished at the time of this scan... Finished product was on Hemp Paper, copic inks, colored pencil and I think I added a little marker also...

And this one may be kind of related. It is prismacolor marker on a wood slat, roughly 2.5x3.5 inches...

I don't have a physical copy of that, nor a digital one.  I don't recall whom I gave the original one to at the 98 apm... All I remember is that someone to be unnamed was extremely upset at both versions.

I buy d&d themed shirts from this online store all the time. They are having a contest. Maybe a way for some of our artists to get some much deserved rec time?

Nope. Just checked.
I've got some of Jak's older stuff down here, some of Jak's newer stuff, and a metric shit-ton of your (House's) commissioned stuff from about 6 years ago. But not the one Jak did of the Staff avatars back in the late 90's.

I can do Full body detail works, which will be 55$. These take depending on the level of detail in them up to 2 weeks to finish
and are generally very large to allow for printing.

Eh?

tinykittenhorde. Read a handful of pages back - people tried to get in contact with her to no avail. She's usually hired out by other MUDs and stuff to do artwork and I don't think she plays much here, if at all. -- Anyway, mostly, I was just saying that if you plan on getting something done by her, might wanna PM her fast since she doesn't look at the boards again for some time.
Title: Re: Character Portraits
Post by: tinykittenhorde on May 14, 2011, 03:41:51 AM
I do play here :) However, my flaw is that I generally do not check the board posts after they are made (which is now rectified!!!  :o :o ) and only await Pm's or emails :O Boog - I have not recieved any requests in such a form at all. (once again, no fault of anyones but my own for not thinking to check the actual board!)

My schedule is entirely clear, so feel free to request in any way you desire  :) I will continue to check this thread as well to make sure that this time i'm caught up on that side of it too ...  once again, my apologies for that lack of common sense on my part. :-X

Before Biscuits made it to the big time, I had an order with her to do a Gage Gritshaw portrait including all of the people that might be considered his "buddies". (I was going to get them to send me their descs and how they wanted to appear and everything.) Whole tavern drinking scene, already plotted out.

I wish she would have waited just one more month to go off and become famous.   :-[

Damn her success.

Do we have any other good artists still doing this?

This seems like the proper place to put this.

This is an artist commission review for Tinykittenhorde. They are an artist that has posted on the GDB before with some great looking art they supposedly completed themselves and they advertised that they would love to take commissions for Arm players.

(Link to their post. http://www.zalanthas.org/gdb/index.php/topic,28929.250.html (http://www.zalanthas.org/gdb/index.php/topic,28929.250.html)

I would love to say I was reviewing some artwork I commissioned them for and that it turned out great. That is exactly what I expected to happen. Unfortunately, that isn't the case. I am having to give them a negative review for not actually completing, and I am pretty sure not even getting started on, the commission in question.

I emailed them asking if they could do a commission for me a couple of months ago. Surenoproblem.jpg.

Great. I send them everything they want and more. Offer to pay them whatever they decide is a fair price after I give them the breakdown. I need this by September, but, August would be preferable. This gives them over a couple of months, even with the August deadline to get this completed, is that a problem?

Nopenoproblem-supereasy.jpg.

Great. I was assurred I would have multiple copies of the artwork sent to me as it was being completed for ammendments and my critique before it was even finished. This sounded awesome. A couple of weeks later I send an email asking about the status. "Oh well, I had a concussion and couldn't get this started yet. But, I feel great now and I'm starting on it. I will have something for you in a few days." Great, thanks for your time. A week passes. So, how is that artwork coming? "Oh well, I haven't actually started yet, but, I will have you something in a few days, I promise." Great, no prolblem, thanks again.

A week later, so how is that artwork coming? "Oh, I'm working on it. I'm going to have you something very soon and the August deadline is going to be super easy to meet. I'm on it." Great, you are awesome, thanks for your help Tinykittenhorde.

A week later. Just kind of following up, hope everything is going well. No response.

A few more days. Same message. No response.

A few more days. Same message. No response.

A week passes, same request for a follow up. No response.

I haven't heard anything from them after multiple attempts to follow up in over a month.

I am going to make the assumption that this commission just isn't happening anymore.

This was actually going to be a gift for my girl. It was her character. This is no longer going to happen in time for her birthday.

My review of Tinykittenhorde and my experience with them has unfortunately been less than spectacular and I have to recommend that the Armageddon community does not reach out to them for commissions.

I agree. Bad reviews should go here as well as the good, especially since this is a sticky, official-ish place to request/offer portraits.
People need to know what they are getting into.

Yeah, she is very amiable. Dealing with her was not an issue.

She just sort of...disappeared. I would have been happy with a, "Hey, I can't do this right now, I have to get my dog dentures." But, I didn't get anything. I even asked her to confirm if she was no longer going to be able to do this project so I could just move on to a new artist, and couldn't even get a reply on that.

If she came back and made good I would be glad to go ahead and give her a second review because I'm certian her artwork would be a great finished product, if it ever got finished...or even started.

But for now, unfortunately, my only interaction with her has been less than stellar and I am forced to recommend that none of the Armageddon playerbase tries to start a commission with her.
Title: Re: Character Portraits
Post by: Kismetic on September 12, 2012, 11:21:17 AM
I mean, I don't think she's trying to survive on Arm commissions ...  lol.  Or she'd be starving to death.  I asked for a commission several months ago from someone, but there was always mo betta characters to draw.  Still, I don't push it, it's their life/time.

If you want a professionally (as in, hitting a deadline) done piece of artwork, there are communities online for professional artists.  They might be able to squeeze one in before it's too late?

Eh?

tinykittenhorde.

Bam, mothafuckas. Told y'all.

I have a good friend who also does character commissions for very reasonable prices.

Here's her etsy: http://www.etsy.com/shop/workofartpg

(She has a blog showing past commissions, but waiting for her permission to post that since it has other stuff.)

She said if she gets the order by the 11th, she'll have it ready by Christmas, and even gift-wrap it for you if you ask.

My husband commissioned one for me as an anniversary gift and it was quite stunning.

Are there any artists who are doing / taking commissions for arm related artwork?

If so, would you be so kind as to post your website and details in this thread, or alternatively PM me.

I recall there was a prolific artist who had done some artwork - including a group of very prominent Kadians (Sharlo, Markua, Murk, Milan, Jubaal, Zaea etc) and some Guild Pcs (Marin) - a few years ago. Anyone know where to find the artist or his/her work?

Might of been Biscuit or Ourla. But there are a couple of other amazing artists that had done work as well. though those two I seem to recall had been commissioned to do a few group pieces.

I know this guy from my gym. He does professional grade artwork. Which makes sense because he has worked for some major video games. I had talked him into doing a commission for me actually, and that character died out of the blue, so it didn't come to be. I still plan to use him in the future.

He isn't cheap, but when you see his artwork you will see why. He did offer me different qualities/details of work for different prices though. As you will see on his website and below, some of his stuff is basically like rough sketch work, some is concept art, and some is professional video game quality stuff.

Still, I recommend him.

Ok so I get the rules, dont post it unles it's approved as an original submmission.  That applies here too right?  I'll keep this rule in mind from now on, it's easy to forget how important it is to show proper conduct in a forum, I wont post anymore pics unless they get the submission approval.  Thanks!

Staff gave me permission to post two portraits here, in lieu of the submissions tool coming back on line. Enjoy!

"Whiran So Far Away"

"Onyxi and Pebble" ... To some dwarves, family is more important than anything.

Edit... I seem to be having trouble getting one of these to display.  You can also view them here. (http://samalacoffey.wordpress.com/2013/09/04/character-portraits/)

Ourla, I'm glad you didn't listen to me. I took a page out of your book and staff were kind enough to approve a few things for me.  ;D

Gwins
The deformed Black Scrab HG turned Bynner
(Pencils and cell shading by Gendron, colors and postwork by me.)

I did some other cityscape renders also, which are -here- (http://gdb.armageddon.org/index.php/topic,10535.msg778200.html#msg778200).

Thanks! I'll give Gendron the credit for that. I can't rock an illustration like you guys. I stick to the digital side.

The Black Scrabs were a player created mini-clan, a while back.

I was going to write The famously deformed Black Scrab HG because it has a nice ring to it, but I thought "famous" would be a stretch, and he's wearing Byn insignia in the picture, so I thought that would confuse observant people, hence the weirdness.

le sigh

I showed her the thread/docs and she sounded interested in doing a commission or three. Is anyone interested? If so let me know, I'll have her make an account!

Really an impressionist sculpture. Not classical, and definitely not modern. Really a fantastic job, Mal. You're one in a million.

I'm pretty sure Ourla is/has been recently.  Maybe not anymore.  She did an awesome character portrait for me not too long back.  Too bad we can't put it on the site  :-\

I still have my 2012 Githmas present from Ourla, It's the only bit of art my uncultured ass has on display, and it's amazing. Little note still with it, btw, because it's that special. But yhea, she's really good.

I've had work done by Ourla before. (It's on the website.) I was under the impression she was busy with life after talking to her in Portlandia.

Sidar, Allanaki soldier banished from nak. Got into some misadventures thereafter.

I've been...toying...with the idea of doing commissions. They problem is, my bandwidth for doing so is low (as I have a hundred other projects on the burner) and obviously, the kind of stuff I would be doing (http://gdb.armageddon.org/index.php/topic,46981.0.html) is outside the norm (3D ain't for everyone - though, I can probably make it look like an approximation of just about any other kind of art, with some photoshopjitsu).

I might be interested in doing a very limited engagement, just to see if its something I want to keep doing.  The other problem is, I already have a stack of art I can't post because of IC limits. If I did decide to bite, I might initially only be interested in commissions that could be posted relatively soon (so I could give people a better idea of what to expect from such a commission).

I dunno. If 3D/my stuff doesn't turn you off, Friday, send me a PM. We can chat.

Because they need more commissions to survive as a company and are awesome, I'll link Artcorgi here as well:

The thread is about to slip off the first page.  :( But seriously, it's a great service for character art.

I don't know any artist who charges less than 25$ for a character portrait. There's some who offer freebies occasionally, but those might take 3 months if they're actually ever completed.

If something is small or only partially done and takes a minimum-wage-compliant number of hours to complete, I might, because I'm not actually very qualified.  :P

But a decent single-subject painting with an abstract background done fairly rapidly apparently takes me 5 hours, so you know, something that quality probably wouldn't be under $25. Sketches are quick enough to get away with a bit though.

I moderated out a couple of posts.  I remember that it's been a long time since I posted that to stay on topic in this thread is only to post advertisement for player-created portraits of your actual characters (not images of possible characters, not unoriginal artwork), and discussion on that topic, but that is still the rule of this thread.  Thanks!

An artist that I work with from time to time is doing commissions for very reasonable rates atm. He’s never missed a deadline for me and the work he puts out is astounding. You can find him at @floatypepi on twitter or if you don’t have a twitter, DM me for his email.

This cost me $40 US for a non-Arm project:
